Editorial Review
A DVD player is only the beginning of a sensational home theater. With the Apex HT-180--which combines a DVD/CD/MP3-CD player with a five-speaker surround-sound system and a passive subwoofer--music and movies take on added power and depth. The system's five satellite speakers and subwoofer are designed to reproduce discrete multichannel surround mixes from Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS surround formats. And, if you burn pictures from your digital camera to CD-Rs and CD-RWs, you can even use the DVD player for watching slideshows right on your television.

The system packs 250 watts total power, the better to deliver the full heft of dinosaur feet and intergalactic engine rumble. Standard composite and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television, though some older sets may require a radio-frequency (RF) modulator to convert a composite-video signal to RF coaxial.

AFF (Apex Full-screen Function) eliminates the black bars that appear at the top and bottom of your 4:3 television screen when watching a widescreen DVD, filling the television viewing area. Simply press the AFF button on your remote control to engage the function. (The feature will minimize, but not completely eliminate, the black bars on movies with aspect ratios of 2.35:1 or wider.)

What's in the Box
DVD home theater tuner/amplifier, a remote control, remote AAA batteries, an RCA composite-video/analog audio cable (yellow, red, and white jacks), an owner's manual, an AM loop antenna, an FM wire antenna, five satellite speakers, a subwoofer, and requisite speaker wire.
