Too Slow
2007-09-17
I purchased this item because of all the rave reviews. The unit works BUT, it is painfully slow, at least for me. I also had to go back and forth THREE times, to get sufficient Latex Primer on the siding I was painting. After using it ONCE, I cleaned it up and sold it in a garage sale for half what I had paid. Admittedly, it is inexpensive. I purchased a sprayer that cost 5 times as much, and I am 5 times happier. I do not do much spray painting, but when I do, I want to do it in as little time as possible.
Beyond expectations!

I've owned a Graco sprayer and found it difficult to clean and awkward when running low on paint. I've also owned the wagner hand held sprayer which was junk, so I was reluctant to by the crew sprayer. I was caught in a jam so I needed to get something reasonably priced. Not only did I receive it quicker than expected, I thought I was dreaming at how great it worked. The self contained paint area kept paint from drying out and it sprayed incredibly well & consistent. The clean up was easy and storage was a piece of cake because of it's design. I LOVE this thing and I was terrified to by it. This product and vendor are superb!!
So so performance

I bought this unit to spray latex paint. The first round with it went pretty well, but the tip had a tendency to clog even after straining the paint and the filter in the gun handle. Regardless, it had a 10" spray width (no adjustment) and did a pretty good job. What I didn't realize was how much a pain it was going to be to clean the built in paint tray and associated parts. After the 3rd time using it I was cleaning the unit and the pump totally quit pumping water. I troubleshooted it some, but then I gave up and returned it for a full refund. IMO, if you need an airless sprayer, get one where it has a tube to go into the paint or a hopper/bin that you can wash directly in water versus this thing.
Great value in an easy to use sprayer

I was all set to rent a pro unit to paint my garage, when I saw a deal on a reconditioned 770. Based on previous experience with Wagner consumer spray guns, I was doubtful, but ordered it anyway. And I'm very glad I did.
Unlike the little diaphragm guns, this gun is light, easy to handle, and puts out a huge volume of paint with no spitting or dribbling. It easily handled the heavy acrylic latex I used on my garage.
The gun supplied with this sprayer is a professional unit, and the pump puts out as much paint as a lot of commercial grade painters. After spending perhaps a half-hour taping and masking, I had my entire garage painted in less time than it took to do the prep!
Cleanup was maybe another half hour, and simple, using the Wagner cleaning and lube solution, if you carefully follow the instructions in the booklet. Hint: After you pour out excess paint in the hopper, use a squeegee to get that lest bit back into the bucket, rinse it with water, and use heavy-duty paper towels to get the last bits out. Then fill the hopper with cleaner, flush, and lube.
One hint: You absolutely want to install a swivel on the gun before using this unit- it's inexpensive, and makes handling the gun much, much easier.
solid machine

this is a good product. i painted the body of a large 2 story house in less than 2 days. it has a few issues, as others have mentioned. the output gasket blew on me after about 8 gallons of paint but i took the blown gasket to the hardware store and bought a few rubber o rings of the same size. has worked perfectly since then. clean up takes a while, but i do think i saved time. best for big jobs, but a good machine.
happy with my decision

Iam a novice when it comes to using a paint sprayer and looked at alot of reviews on the paint crew and weighed the options on pros and cons and Iam not at all unhappy with this unit. There were 2 of us and we painted a 2 storey cedar house and it took us 7 hrs to do the whole job. There were some complaints that it took along time to clean up the unit but it did take some time but not too long (30-40)min or so. All I can say if I would have done it by roller or brush I would still be painting. As with anything you buy you take a chance on getting a lemon but Iam happy with the paint crew
Very Pleased So Far

At first I was skeptical of this product because of all the bad reviews. Last weekend I pulled down all our shutters and planned on putting on primer and paint on them by hand and I was planning on painting the garager. Oh my goodness, it took me all day and I only had the primer on the shutters and paint on about 1/4 of the shutters. Despite many of the bad reviews, I took a chance and purchased this product.
While I have only painted with about 2 gallons so far, using this was a dream compared to painting by hand. Last night I painted all 32 shutters and the garage door and fully cleaned the machinge in about 2 and 1/2 hours. It was awesome. The machine worked flawlessly with the only drawback that was in the other reviews that came true was when there was only a little bit of paint left in the hopper, the pump started to run all the time. I did not try to continue painting, I simply added more paint and away I went. Frankly the amount of paint left in the hopper when this happend was very very minimal.
The only reason at all I gave it four stars was because of the excessive clean up time. Out of the 2 1/2 hours, about 45 minutes to one hour was clean up. I really didn't mind the clean up becuase I still was going to save about 5-6 hours over painting by hand.
It is totally obvious during clean up that many of the other peoples problems came from not properly cleaning the machine. There are many small parts that could easily not function properly the next time if they were gunked up with paint that was not properly cleaned.
So if you mind some excessive clean up time, this machine may not be for you, otherwise I was very impressed and pleased with my purchase. [...]
Happy Painting.
Wagner = POS

I had in the past tried a few other Wagner products. 3 to be exact and each one died before the job was finished. In the past I was repainting the inside of an apartment and it would get clogged or just die but it did a majority of it so I was happy.
I have moved on to a house and after speaking with some people at the local Home Depot and Lowes and they heard only good things about this I decided to try it again. I bought the reconditioned model from Amazon and when I took it out of the box and set it up it all worked very well. It looked brand new as a matter of fact, all nice and clean parts in their own bags. I had about 1/2 the house taped and ready to go so it began. I noticed that on the 3rd gallon or so the spray pattern was getting a little light but kept going as this thing put out a fair amount of paint. The 5th gallon down I only put in another one as that was all I needed to finish the 2nd story part I was at and about half way through it the thing just stopped. I was sure I blew a fuse or something but nada. Tried other plugs, nada.
The machine just stopped working. I still had pressure in the hose so I sprayed it out and after tinkering around with it could not get it to work again.
I don't know how I missed the other bad reviews on here. People either love it or hate it and I am the latter. I should have known better to trust Wagner again but I figured if I could even get 1/2 the house done it would be a good deal. I am left with a $115 paint tray that is utterly useless. I can't even clean the unit or the hose as I can't get the motor to turn on at all...
I will try the warranty option or returning it but Wagner needs to stop making things that are complete POS's. 5 gallons, ARE YOU FRIGGIN KIDDING ME!?!?!?!?!? I will NEVER purchase another Wagner product ever again.
Using this is like using heroin.

You feel great, laugh-out-loud with power, unbelievably productive...but then really bad things happen and you're destroyed.
I used this for several days. At first it was like "Harry Potter painting" -- waive my magic wand and whatever I wanted was covered in paint. And nicely covered. Even. Neat. Complete.
But then, over the next few days I had clogs, issues, drop in power. I did thorough cleaning the first few days but then left it wrapped in wet towels and plastic as per the manual. Problems started. I was spending more time cleaning and debugging my painting tools than painting -- than i would have spent with painting via traditional means. And over-spray cleanup...don't even ask.
Bottom line. If you can guarantee 30 min of uninterrupted cleanup time at the end of each job (no, "come to dinner NOW" nonsense from the domestic boss), or, better, if you have a teenage son who's sole job is cleaning the thing when you're done, then, maybe, you can get great value out of this. If you don't have these things then small clogs will lead to bigger ones until you say the hell with it and let the paint say in it overnight and you're stuck with an ugly yellow piece of modern sculpture. Just like the one I am staring at now.
That first day was sure fun, though.

I bought the Wagner Paint Crew to paint the exterior of my house recently. A couple of years ago I painted a smaller house using brushes and rollers. Painting a bigger house with the Paint Crew took a fraction of the time. I found it very easy to use right out of the box and had the hang of it within minutes. The clean-up process is a bit complicated, but not bad once you've done it a time or two, and the instruction manual is quite clearly written and relatively easy to follow. I'm extremely pleased. I've also done some interior painting using a professional grade sprayer, and the Paint Crew performs just as well. I would have to say this is the best money I've spent on a tool, in recent memory -- and the price is extremely reasonable for what you get.
