BUYING ANY PORTABLE DVD PLAYER IS A REAL GAMBLE. I RECOMMEND BUYING ONE FROM SOMEWHERE WHERE IT IS EASY TO RETURN IN CASE YOU HAVE PROBLEMS.
You should be able to find this at a much lower price. Most stores sell it for around $129.
Buying a portable DVD player is a real gamble. You might buy this and not have any problems at all. Someone else might buy it and have all kinds of problems. It is not just Cyberhome that has varying quality, it is all brands. If you look up the reviews of other portable DVD players on Amazon, you will see that they all get positive and negative reviews.
This unit looks cool and has a very nice, sturdy metal case. But, the latches are made of plastic and very flimsy. The button that opens the door broke on my first unit, and I had to replace the unit. On the new unit, the button looks just as weak and I would expect that it would break eventually if I kept it.
The biggest problem I had is that it would not play all my DVD's. I am talking about standard, store-bought DVD's (not DVD-R's or RW's). For instance, it did not play Monsters, Inc. I could not see anything wrong with the disc, and it played OK on all my other DVD players. It would not play about 30% of my DVD's.
This problem with not playing certain DVD's happened on both units I had. Monsters, Inc. would not play on first unit I had, or the replacement unit. So, I returned the unit and got my money back. I will now take a gamble with some other brand.
The resolution and picture quality are not great. I have not compared the picture quality of these portable DVD units, so I don't know if this is typical of all brands. But, I was a little disappointed in the picture quality, when comparing it to the screens on airplanes or in cars.
The only other downside about this unit is that it does not have very many functions on the case, so you have to use the remote control if you want to do something like jump to the next chapter.
I bought this unit because it advertised the longest battery life of any unit I have seen. It claims to get 4 and a half hours on one charge. I didn't keep the unit long enough to time the actual length, but it is certainly well over 2 hours.
It comes with almost everything you would want, including a car charger and remote control. If it played all my DVD's, it would be a pretty nice unit (as long as I was real careful with the buttons).
This is a piece of junk

I bought this machine less then a year ago and up until my problem, probably would of given it a better rating until my husband went to use it about 7 month into it, he started to open it heard a little grinding in the hinges, it got stuck he continued to open it and the hinges just broke. It is a cheaply made product. but it only gets better folks. Emailed the company they said sent it back and as long as it was within a year, they would replace or repair free of charge. Gross misrepresentation. Get a call from them telling me it would cost me $90 to have a new machine because the item had to of been dropped. wrong just a piece of junk. Sorry so long just want people to watch what they buy, my friend always says, buy cheap, buy twice. and it sure is the case with CyberHome.
Great for a while

I was thrilled with this item for two years. Then it started getting more and more finicky with disks. It chugged along making some awful noises trying to recognize them, and would play the same disk one day but not another. Considering all I did with my DVD's was move them from their containers to this unit, it seemed to me that I did not have defective or unbalanced disks; rather something seemed to break down over time in the device's ability to recognize and work with more and more disks. This conclusion was borne out by the fact that I can play the same disks in my computer or a set-top DVD player with no problems.
At first this happened with almost no disks at all in my large collection and all the rentals I go through, but now the unit has basically just stopped being able to recognize any disks at all.
Others have complained that this brand seems cheaply made; I'd say it's great until suddenly it turns ridiculously bad and then quickly becomes totally worthless. That time frame took two years for me, which seems a short lifespan for an item like this if properly treated -- and I treated it with kid gloves -- it never even left my bedroom. Seems a shame, as the unit still did everything right -- if only it could read the disks. Looks from the other reviews like others had the same problem, so be forewarned that this is an item that has a limited lifespan.
Normally I would give a product that quit on me lower ratings, but I did really enjoy the product, and would have given it a 5 until it suddenly went belly up.
Had to return item within 15 days of purchase

It bought this item from radio shack (not Amazon), but it is the same exact item...so I wanted to comment on it.
The picture looked clear, the sound pretty clear, I liked the way it looked and felt (weight) and the battery-life was pretty accurate. I might have gotten a faulty-item, but the screen kept going black above 20 minutes into the DVD. And if you put it in the straight position (to mount into your car carrer) it completely shuts itself off. I have two children and they were extremely upset to have the DVD Player stop working 20 minutes into a movie. Thank goodness I bought this item 1 month before our vacation (We are driving in my minivan to WDW, which is about 1100 miles away)!
I am going to return it, but request a different item.
intelligently designed, versatile, well-built little machine.

This was a gift, and although I would no longer pay full retail price for it, it performed flawlessly throughout the long summer of a bed-ridden friend's recuperation. The screen, which uses a passive rather than active matrix design, does not have the sharp, detailed picture of today's laptops and HD monitors but proved more than adequate for movies and ideal for cartoons. (The onboard speakers, while lacking in bass, are clear and loud--and earphones are included as an option.) Moreover, if used as a player rather than self-contained unit, it's capable of producing a big screen picture and sound equal to, if not better than, the best DVD/CD players. Never once did it fail to play a commercial DVD or CD (better than I can say for even a Sony and Panasonic that I've owned). It's made of solid and sturdy metal (not plastic) and is definitely superior to the low-grade brands I've wasted money on (Apex, Mintek, Colby, GPX, J-Win) or, for that matter, some of CyberHome's own conventional, dirt-cheap DVD players that were no bargain even at $30.
This model would occasionally "scare" me with an apparently dead screen, but it always proved to be a false alarm (if you switch it to player/AV mode, the screen will go black). It's not made for rough and tumble treatment by kids fighting over it in the back seat of a vehicle. Approach it with patience and respect, and it will reward you with years of good service. I was never able to get the advertised 4 hours on a single battery charge, but 2-3 hours was easily do-able, depending on variables such as loudness and brightness settings. (My laptop does no better. When possible, I used the CyberHome for extensive periods running off AC power.)
The compact design and build quality of the unit have to be seen to be appreciated. I've read that CyberHome is out of business because of using patents (from Phillips) for which they did not have legal rights. In this case, the company's misfortunes could be to the benefit of the consumer, should you still be able to find a steeply-discounted, desirable product in the company's equipment line.
THOUGHT I got a great deal! Ha!

When I saw this for $99 at K-Mart last year, I thought I had found the answer to our almost-1-year-old son's hatred of car trips. It felt pretty cheap & flimsy, but worked well, and played everything we put in it (even library DVDs that were pretty beat up), but the power cord connection was ALWAYS loose. Then about 3 months ago, it quit working completely--the AC adaptor didn't work, the battery charger didn't work, nothing. Luckily, my brother-in-law is an electronics wiz, and he was able to get it working again in about 5 hours of fiddling (and I didn't have to pay the $59 repair fee--plus shipping--Cyberhome quoted). However, our last car trip last week was IT. Every time we went over a tiny bump in the road, the cord fell out. I'm looking for a new DVD player again!`
Wish we would have chosen a different brand

We left all our cords and adapter on an airplane and they couldn't find them, so we tried to find a new adapter to hook it up in the car and no place around had one that would fit. Lots of places sold some that fit most DVD players but not this one. So we went to the Cyberhome webiste and with shipping it cost $55 just for the one adapter, I felt that was rediculously over priced. The average price of the adapter that fit most other DVD players was only $15. Next time we get a DVD player I will makes sure we can easily find new accessories to fit it so we don't have to spend a fortune.
Not so Great for the $$

I got this CyberHome brand portable DVD player and it was pretty cheaply made..returned it and looked for awhile and got the Toshiba SDP-1600 and it rocks! The battery pack on the Toshiba attaches at the back and some people don't like that it "sticks out"...but I'v never had a problem with this at all.. The Toshiba has held up for over 4 years now! Don't get the Cyber home...look online and you can get a Toshiba for same price. ($150)
Excellent widescreen portable region-free DVD player (with remote code)
2005-08-22
The CH-LDV 712 is a very sleek player with a 7inch LCD. The remote has mute, volume controls, brightness and language/subtitle controls among others. You can turn off the LCD if you use it to listen to CDs.
Here is the Region code hack found from VideoHelp.
1. Turn on your dvd player using the remote control
2. open the tray
3. press the "stop" button on your remote
4. enter 1999 using the remote & a special menu will pop up.
5. select the region code as indicated using the remote (set it to ALL)
6. confirm it, using "enter" key on remote
7. leave the menu using the "return" button on your remote
8. close the tray
It is great for learning foriegn languages and you can find non-region 1 discs at Amazon's other sites such as France and Germany.
