I love this printer!
2007-09-06
I bought this printer over 5 years ago because it was cheap and I needed something to print work documents. I have now printed THOUSANDS of pictures on it and have never had an issue!
I love how it nestles many sizes of paper
I love the speed of printing, especially document printing.
I love that the ink doesn't cost more than the printer
The quality of the printed page depends on what you send to the printer. Coupled with a good camera, there's no difference in the pictures I print and the pictures I have developed at the drug store. If you're a beginner who's looking to start printing your own pictures, don't get rooked into buying an expensive printer. This is the perfect option for you!
I also have no issues with printing on plain paper or cardstock. This is the ultimate scrapbooking tool!
When this one goes bad, I'll be buying another one. Even after 5 years of use, I have no desire to upgrade to anything else.
Broken with Very Little Use

Our Canon i560 broke after printing a few hundred pages. The printer light is blinking 6 times. I have searched Canon site for information and I am getting internal server errors on their web site. Their manual does not have any information about the problem. I purchased because the rating was so high here. But that sure has not been my experience. I'll go back to HP's printers!
Starts out good, but then...

This is basically a very nice printer. It has worked easily with several Windows and Mac computers that have passed through my hands. Print quality is good for both text and photos in spite of it not being a "photo" printer. It's also fairly economical with ink. Paper handling is very good. I've had a few misfeeds with envelopes but not many, and almost no problems with sheets of various weights.
It has one major problem that makes me hesitant to get another Canon. The print head goes bad after a year or so. When bad it prints off color streaks and will not clean or align. Cleaning and deep cleaning has no effect.
The saving grace is that the head is replaceable ($49 w/ shipping). I'm on my second print head & and debating whether to get a third one or a new printer. I used a mix of third party inks and Canon branded on the first head, but only Canon inks on the second. Both heads started failing after about the same amount of use so I can't attribute the problem to the ink brand.
It works very well as long as it works, but get used to the idea of replacing the print head every couple of years. I've had the same problem with an i550 (on my wife's computer) that I still own, so I'm suspicious of more recent Canon printers. On the other hand, printers that put the print head on the ink cartridge (HP) have more expensive cartridges. It's all a matter of tradeoffs and preferences.
Too bad it was discontinued

No 'chip' cartridges to deal with. Too bad the print head isn't a normal printer replacement part. It has to ordered from service, but you can install it yourself.
Decent printer

Does a good job for the price. Separate cartridges for each color, which makes it affordable. The cartridges are reasonably priced also.
Exceptional value.

I purchased this item on June 15 2004 for 85. After almost exactly four years the guy I sold it to called me to complain it wasn't working. I was totally expecting it would have to be replaced, but after cleaning the print head with a wet tissue and replacing and priming the ink cartridges, (the black was empty) the thing started printing as if it was a brand new printer.
I have never seen an inkjet double in price before. I wish I had bought one for myself back then.
Great Printer

Why review a 5 year old printer? Why not? If you have the chance to pick up one of these used in good condition go ahead and buy it. It prints good text documents and excellent photos. I've printed many photos as gifts for friends and family and the photos all came out great. Oh and ink for this printer is dirt cheap.
The only downfall is that this printer was made before non-fade ink formulations were common. So if you put photos printed from this printer in direct sunlight everyday, the photos will fade over time. Personally I've had little problem with this but you should be aware of that possiblitiy.
Excellent Printer!!!

This is my second Canon printer that uses 4 small cartrides instead of two
costly big ones. Prints like a charm; easy to operate and to make sure it
runs forever (hopefully!) I ordered 3 extra Print Heads from the company.
Makes fine colored prints, quick action. I will ALWAYS hunt for a Canon
using four inexpensive cartridges, because you replace one cartridge at a
time as it runs out, at as little as $l.75+ each (off internet). So much
cheaper to operate than those machines that demand $$ big cartridges. I
would never even consider any other kind of printer, and definitely no
other manufacturer.
Great printer, but I don't understand the price.

When I bought this printer in 2003, It was a little over $100. I don't care what kind of software they may have added, but it's worth a little over $100. (The better software also comes with the Canon A560 and S3 cameras.)
As with most things Canon, this is a good piece of equipment. It doesn't use ink sparingly, and the cartridges are expensive, so the one thing I use the printer sparingly for is printing photos.
It's relatively fast. Print quality is excellent. Ink dries quickly. And if you are going to print photos, HP Premium Plus glossy photo paper "outshines" Canon's own. Ink dries faster on HP than on any other I've tried -- and that's a lot.
Unreliable printer

I bought this printer because Consumer Reports rated it very high and it worked for two years then suddenly I got the blinking thing and there is no way (at least in the manual or in their website) you can fix it! What a total waste! I noticed that someone here had the same problem. To be fair though, the printing quality is pretty good.
