colors always off
2005-11-18
I have had this printer for about 15 months now, and I print only on Canon paper. The colors are always either too yellow or too magenta (even b&w images have a color cast!), and Canon's own reps could not figure out why or help resolve the problem. I printed on regular computer paper, and the colors were fine. It also doesn't print with the densities shown on my original files. My images look exactly right on my computer and print beautifully when I send them to a lab, and I'm an advanced amateur photographer. In other words, I know well enough what I'm doing, so it's not operator error but a printer problem (which Canon agrees on). My mother, who is an artist, had recommended this printer to me, but she began to see a color cast as well and replaced it with an HP printer that's dead on.
When I originally bought this printer, everyone's reviews said to only use Canon paper to get the best quality, but I'd have to disagree. I'm not sure whether to waste money on buying a different brand of paper and trying that, or just buy a different printer, but this one gets a thumbs down from me. What a waste of $200.
Good buy!

Item shipped promptly and was as described. Will certainly do business with seller again.
Awesome printer

I've owned this printer for about 8 months now and must say it prints flawlessly everytime. I've printed over 600 4x6 pictures so far on Canon paper and they always look as good as they do on my computer! I really believe this is one of the best photo printers out there and highly recommend it. When it comes time to buy a new on, I'm still sticking with Canon.
Great Color and Value

I just received my printer yesterday as a gift and it's the best one I've owned, hands down. I've printed an array of images from 4x6 to 8x11 and all of them are excellent. I also have a Canon PowerShot camera so I was able to start printing pictures without hooking it up to the PC. The detail is amazing and the colors are very vivid. Definately will be recommending this one.
As good as it gets

IMO: I was really turned off of ink jet printers after having owned and then thrown away my Epson 780. The print quality on this machine was spectacular...for the 1% of the time the heads were not clogged.
So I waited a few years, hoping that technology would improve. The Canon i960 got good reviews, and hardly anyone complained about clogged heads, and the unit was being discontinued so prices have dropped to an attractive level.
Print quality is as good as it goods, no question. No missing lines or other artifacts. I have one complaint though, because the colour tone is very slightly yellow, noticeable on skin tones. I had to go to manual colour correction and reduce the amount of yellow by 10 points (out of a possible 40 points). The advanced options give you colour correction "pro" and it seems to add a slight amount of colour saturation but it reduces detail in the blacks very slightly. I print mostly using matte paper because it gives the best dark colour performance (gloss paper tends to wash out blacks leaving you with one shade of black) and you can put the print next to glass, whereas with gloss, contacting glass with ruin the print and also give you a smudge mark on the glass. The very slight yellow on default software settings resulted in me giving four instead of five stars.
The unit is very quiet. Just a very soft swooshing sound as the head moves back and forth. No need to use quiet mode.
Quality construction. Yes, it's made of plastic but the build quality is very good. Some have complained about having to remove shipping tape. So what? You only have to remove it when it's out of the box. Lots of products require removal of shipping tape.
You can use non-Canon paper, but results will vary with paper so you will need to experiment. I got excellent results with Epson photo matte paper, actually better than Canon's own glossy paper samples that came with the printer.
Don't worry about printing directly to the printer. You will want to run your pics though a computer to get the software colour correction. I tried printing with no software correction and the colour tone wasn't very good.
excellent printer

I have always used Canon printers because of their multiple ink tank design. I use generic ink in refillable cartridges to maximize cost effectiveness. This printer does an excellent job.
OK for 6 months, then, caput-

After adjusting for how pink this printer printed photos (had to take the Magenta setting to -15), it was OK for about 6 months. Now, every photo prints incredibly pink. I take photographs of art for a major collection here in Boston. Color matching is very important in my prints. This printer is horrible. By by. Im going to HP.

Not worth the money

I purchased this printer two years ago and 1t produced excellent results for the first year. The color quality slowly began to diminsh after that time and eventually required that I perform the head cleaning process before each printing job. I finally received an error message that instructed me that a major malfunction had taken place and to contact customer service. I was then instructed to either ship the unit in for service or consider a new unit. The manufactured would not tell me what the suspected problem was however suggested that it could be the printing head. I believe that not using the printer on a regular bases caused the heads to plug up beyond what the normal deep cleaning process could correct. My advice to anyone who buys into the Canon ink tank system, be sure to print a test page daily and perform the head cleaning process weekly. I don't believe I will own another Canon printer for this reason.
Have a Canon i950 and i960 - Both Great Machines
2006-01-22
I did a lot of research before buying my i950 a few years ago. I bought the i960 a year ago when I thought the i950 stopped working. Found out it was only a bad cable but now I have both! LOL
These photo printers print the most awesome pictures I have seen. I waffled between the Canon and the Epson and decided on Canon and I'm glad I did. I never take my photos for printing anymore. We have taken some awesome pictures while on vacation and having a printer to print an 8 x 10 if you want it is great. I only print the pictures I want.
I've found that my printer ink does not run out as fast as I thought they would. The cartridges are around $11-12. I use my photo printer for convenience. I generally take 500-1200 pictures with my digital per 7-10 day vacation. Having that number of pictures developed can be cost prohibitive. With the photo printer, I can just print the shots I want. A lot of my pictures end up as computer desktops and emailed. If I am doing a memory book or photo album and I can just print the photos I need.
The colors are sharp and clear and always match what I have on screen unless my printer ink is getting low, then I might get some weird tinge to a photo. The printer warns you when you are getting low. I would recommend not using anything other than the canon ink refills. I tried an offbrand sold by Frye's in my i950 and have occ skipped lines, even after head cleaning, etc. I took it out almost immediately, but it still very rarely will skip lots of lines. I have thought about repairing it but the printers are so inexpensive now, it probably would be cheaper just to buy another.
Anyway, I have my Canon i960 which is basically about the same printer, but I believe the differences are the i960 has the individual 4x6 paper holder, USB connection and you can print directly from camera. Luckily, both these printers use the same ink cartridges. The printers also come with some great photo editing software by Adobe and OCR software.
The next printer I buy will be a Canon that prints bigger photos.
Two years and still printing wonderfully!

I bought this printer and a Canon camera as a package deal. (Canon was supposed to give me a $50 rebate, but that never happened... oh well). I am a serious amateur photographer and know a quality print when I see one. This is a wonderful printer and gives consistently wonderful results. However, you need to know some things about calibrating your monitor and using the Canon printer drivers to achieve decent results. If you have a monitor calibrator (ColorSync calibration on Macs is sufficient), then use the proper printer settings when you print, and good quality paper (Canon or Konica), you should get lab quality results. This printer is very quiet and paper jamming is minimal. The 4x6 paper holder is nice, but a bit clunky. The ink cartridges are nice. If you think they are pricey and want to get your fingers dirty, then try refilling them. It is relatively easy to do with the proper kit (I use one available from Sam's Club). Howeverk, for my serious work, I always use the Canon inks. I think Canon has the best digital cameras and printers on the market. Epson printers are OK, but my last one got plugged up and I couldn't fix it. Plus it was noisy, and the ink carts had chips in them that complicated the refilling process. This Canon printer is well-made and designed. The software from Canon is awkward to use. On a Mac, stick with iPhoto and Photoshop (Elements). You can do everything and more than the Canon software provides.
