Works well at either speed.

Works way better than the equivalent JET and much better than my (really) old Mikita. I recommend the folding table accessory, but I still get snipe on short boards. (Probably a matter of adjustment). I had been dreading the day that the blades needed to be changed (turned around actually, blades have two edges) but that turned out to be a snap! The rotating drum has pegs that fit into alignment holes in the blades. I rarely use it on the 'finish' speed (179 cuts per inch) as it works just fine at 'rough' 96 cpi. I've had no trouble at all going down to 1/8 inch thickness. However, connected to my dust collection system, chips fall back down onto the table surface!? It doesn't do that when it isn't connected to the dust collection system, so I don't know what that's all about. It's an ear buster, and it pretty well needs a dedicated 20 amp circuit.
What a dissapointment

This planer has been a huge disappointment. It worked great for about 100-150 board feet. Since then i have had to feed the material through manually. I bought this machine before i started only buying commercial grade woodworking tools (mostly Grizzly) and i regret it. For a few hundred bucks more you can get a 15" grizzly planer that you will love forever.
More time cleaning than working

OK so apart from the knives becoming dull within 1 hour of starting this machine up, I feel it is necessary to comment on the poor dust evacuation. I use this planer with a high powered dust collector connected at all times. For some reason I am constantly having to remove the case and manually clean out the cogs and chain as they have become so clogged that turning the depth adjuster is impossible. I don't know if I am the only person who seems to have this problem.
I would not recommend this planer as it seems to be the proverbial money pit with regards to new blades and constant repairs, not to mention wasted man hours.
It's Plane Great

After my Delta 12" Thickness Planer casting Cracked, I was in need of a medium duty Planer and I've had lots of good experience with Dewalt stuff..( May the Delta quality curse not affict this new aquisiton of their's as others have succommened in the past)I have run thick and thin stock through it and it seems to be holding up well. I have one just like it at my other job and it's done well also. The knives are also very easy to change, a characteristic I have come to demand lately on my Thicknerss Planers and Jointers. And it arrived very quick and in good working order. Thanks much
Still waiting to change blades

I bought this planer and a spare set of blades 2 years ago, I haven't even reversed the original blades yet!! I have put over 200 sq feet. of Paduk and 75 of Brazil cherry through this machine along with some Oak and Popular. You can guess how many times you have to run rough lumber through so as too keep it as thick as possable. Sure you can hog it down a 1/16 of a inch at a time if its popular ,but dont try that with a 12" wide board of Brazil cherry. To sum it up , I couldn't be happyer with this machine. Can you believe it still leaves a great finish !!
not for subcontractor

13", Heavy Duty, Portable 2 Speed Thickness Planer.
Best lunchbox around.

This is my favorite tool in the shop above a Delta TS and Jet jointer. The results in terms of accuracy and finish are near perfect. You could spend much more on a planer but this guy does the job for hobbiest. I had about 200+ bdft of rough walnut/poplar and cedar on the first sides of my blades and am happy with how long that last.
Great Idea .... Bad Implementation

If you enjoy buying High-Priced Ink Jet Cartridges for that low-priced printer, then you will love this planer.
I've had my DW735 for two years now and I've spent more on replacement blades than the original cost of the unit (including the side tables)(can't believe those cost extra!)
I plane a lot of White Oak, and smaller quantities of other hardwoods. I'm really lucky to get 2-3 hours of planer time before nick marks start showing up and the blades have dulled out!!!!!!
Also...the inside of the unit is all formed abs plastic, and hairline cracks are showing up, so it probably will not last much longer. Kind of like Dewalts' Random orbit sanders that typically last me about 7-8 months! Sure has become a disposable tool market...nothing lasts anymore!
Loving my new planer - DeWalt DW735

Set up: Very easy. I like the idea of a single tool to make all adjustments and change blades.
Dust ejection assistance: Better than I'm used to. No messy infeed table to constantly clean.
Noise: A lot quieter than my old DeWalt.
Planing quality: Smooth as a baby's bottom with very little to no snipe.
I use a lot of oak, cherry and walnut. This planer has performed well with these woods.
Great Planer

I buy nominal cut lumber (mostly quarter sawn oak ) for my furniture building. The old Delta planer I was using was just not up to job. After reading all the reviews, pro and con, on Amazon as well as in many other woodworking publications, I decided on the Dewalt.
What a great machine! I built a simple infeed and outfeed table for it and have been amazed at the results. Although it has two speeds I have only found need for one. The oak comes out smooth as glass with hardly any need for sanding. Controls are easy to use and the automatic thickness gage is as accurate as can be. The waste chip blower is amazing. I hooked it up to my dust collection system and ran it without turning on the collector, It actually blew the chips thru 20 feet of 4" hose to the collector.
Could not be happier, this has made surfacing wood fun.
