Fisher Price Sounds and Lights: Basic, No Frills Means to Check on Your Babies
2008-05-31
The Fisher Price Sounds `N Lights Monitor offers some good qualities that make it a worthwhile addition to the household with infants and young toddlers. Its best feature is its ability to pick up and transmit even the slightest sounds. Any slight noise in the babies' room, like a slight cough, or even a deep breath, is detected by the transmitter and sent to the receiver. Depending on how loud the volume is turned up, concerned parents will be able to hear these and other sounds with ease.
Sounds are most important, but The Fisher Price Sounds `N Lights Monitor also offers lights to let parents know about the activities taking place. The lights indicate the intensity of the noise and they work even if the volume is turned completely off. The arcs of red light on the Fisher Price Sounds `N Lights Monitor include four arcs and they light up based on the intensity of the noise. They aren't absolutely necessary, but they are good for those who would rather monitor with their eyes as opposed to ears.
Does the Fisher Price Sounds `N Lights Monitor have any drawbacks? Yes, it certainly does and the most annoying among them is the static. No matter how little activity is going on within the vicinity of the transmitter, you still get static and it is especially loud if the volume control is turned too high. Sometimes, you can reposition the receiver and/or transmitter of the Fisher Price Sounds `N Lights Monitor and reduce the static. Changing the channel can also help. But you can't do much with the antennae and there is almost no way to get completely static- free reception.
Another potential problem with this monitor is its ability to sometimes pickup the sounds from other people in the neighborhood. If someone else is using a baby monitor- or even if they are just talking on the phone- the Fisher Price Sounds `N Lights Monitor might end up receiving some of the sounds. This can be quite shocking when it happens the first time. You will think there is someone in your babies' room when, in reality, the sounds are coming from the neighbors.
Taken as a whole, however, the Fisher Price Sounds `N Lights Monitor is a good monitor for new parents and while it doesn't offer anything special, it gets the job done for minimal cost. There are certainly better monitors out there, but this monitor completes its task without doing too much damage to the pocketbook.
Excelente Producto y Muy Util

Este producto es muy útil y de buena calidad, en países como Colombia, en algunos lugares presenta interferencias de señal por la mala calidad del energía electrica, pero se puede solucionar con un buen cortapicos o estabilizador de voltaje
It does the job. I like it.

I have been using it since my 21-month-old was born. I have never used other baby monitors so there is no comparison can make. It has lights on when it detacts any sound. I can even hear my baby breathing. It is durable. There is no fanzy functions, but for the price I paid, it really does a good job.
Noise, noise and more noise

You can turn up the volume to hear the baby, but you will be listening to a lot of static and won't be able to sleep at night. We tried this monitor in 3 different areas of the US, and static everywhere. Very poorly designed. Do not buy it.
Enjoy Static? You better with this unit!

Have this unit in out house, we have the one with one base unit and two mobile units.
A few things to note. The ones we had do not offer rechargeable batteries. It uses alkaline only, or if you have your own charger you could use rechargeable but would be nicer if it recharged while plugged in.
We live in NYC, Queens to be exact. We hear taxi cab radio chatter over this at times, especially at night. Also if unit is close to base unit static is not too bad but still annoying in bedroom, BUT if you have it one floor away, forget it. Unless child is screaming all you hear is static. on both units.
Only has two channels A & B which are set manually at both base and hand held units. So if you have a bad signal in middle of night, you have to go into child's room and change channel. Just don't wake the baby! Ouch!
Also missing a pager and a "walkie talkie" feature. They would be very nice. Not a deal breaker if they don't have it BUT it can be handy especially if your two floors up with baby with a full diaper and Spouse is in basement and you need more diapers from Garage.
I am about to have a second child, and I am replacing this unit with a better one, I am looking at one of the new digital units that have the noise/static reduction. Consumer Reports gave some of them their top marks. They are however way more pricey than these, some are near $200 and only one receiver. But they all have charging bases and most importantly they are static free with AUTO channel switching!

A restage of the very successful 49 Mhz Sounds 'n Lights monitor. The Sounds 'n Lights restage delivers superior communication to mom of baby's call with a dramatic new "Radial" light display. The light display replaces the current single LEDs with concentric semi-circles of light that have a bolder, more visible glow so Mom can "see" her baby's call more clearly and from a greater distance. A fresh new contemporary housing design for both the transmitters and receiver further refreshes the monitor. Internal features of the monitor will remain the same.
We Liked It

We have used this monitor (with dual receivers) in 2 different houses now for over 18 months. We think the monitor is very sensitive; I can hear my son breathing if I turn up the receiver volume, and other relatively quiet noises register on the light display as well. We love the lights as it allows us to do other things (like talk on the phone or play music) and still know if our child needs us; they are also great at night, and we usually leave the volume very low.
The only static issues we had were when we plugged certain types of electronics into the same outlet as the receiver it created a bad hum, and when we left our cellphones right next to the receiver it would occasionally chirp. When plugged in there is always a low white-noise background hiss, also visible as 1 constant bar of light, that is not there when they run on batteries, but this is neither loud nor troublesome even to my normally sensitive ears unless the volume is very high. We specifically wanted a model that would run on outlet power, but appreciate that we can occasionally unplug and take the monitor outside on battery power while we do yardwork.
Overall we are very pleased. As an added bonus, the units are durable enough that we can let our toddler "discover" how they work and carry them around without worry or damage.
More than you pay for....

Even though I'm convinced that all monitors work differently in different locations, this model has treated us well. We got this monitor (with dual receivers) for my first daughter 3 1/2 years ago and it was always clear & crisp. Reception was perfect in the basement, in the frontyard, in the backyard...even at the neighbor's house. One of the receivers konked out after about 2 years but we survived with only one. The second receiver finally stopped working last week & after doing waaaaayyyy too much internet research, I decided to go with the same, trusty, inexpensive monitor and it works great! I've never slept with a monitor in our room (because our babies stay with us for a long time) so I don't know about nighttime quirks. I keep the monitor in our kitchen area to listen for the little one waking up from naps....and to spy on the girls when they play upstairs without me. :) Baby #3 is on the way & I'm sure this monitor will last another 3 years until we don't need it anymore. So, $40 over the course of 3 children isn't bad!
Awful background noise
2006-08-13
We had a cheap monitor of the same type by "First Years" and thoought it great, then bought this one 10 months ago to use for my second child. The background noise is so bad that we can't use it in anything other than a noisy room. Also, there's no warning when the battery goes so we once had my elder daughter crying for us and we had no idea - we didn't know the batteries had died.
Absolutely not worth any money - there are better options.
Keep Looking -- Not worth the money spent

This monitor is awful. I suggest you completely research monitors before purchasing...I wish I did! The static is so annoying. It is so bad that I will turn on the monitor every few minutes to check on the baby...I won't leave in on due to the static. Sorry to complain, but I don't want you wasting your money!!!
