Maybe it works for squirrels, but not for mice 2008-05-02
We purchased this human trap to try to capture a mouse we had seen lurking in the yard/porch/crawl space. We loaded it exactly as directed (which is very very very difficult, partly from unclear instructions and partly because it is easy for human fingers to spring the trap).

And we gave the mouse free snacks for a week. The bait--no matter what we put in--always got eaten, but the mouse never sprung the trap.

Maybe it would work for a heavier animal, but the little field mice seem to be just too small to spring the trap. We had, however, EXCELLENT results with a different humane trap shaped like a little green house (although those results included finding out the mouse had a friend...or five).

great catch 2008-03-27
Excellent product. Every time it's set properly it delivers. Proves that there's more to Littiz than chocolate!

Insanely Effective 2008-02-12
Amazing trap. I can catch mice more or less at will. Takes a little time to learn the technique of setting the trap levers, but once you get it it's a piece of cake. I tend not to trap in the bitter cold, since the little buggers don't stand much chance to survive, but use this to clear them out in the spring, and keep them out in the fall. This year I had almost no traces of mice in the winter.

While it may be more humane to just kill the mice, I kind of look at it from my perspective. I'd rather have a 1/100 chance in the woods in October than certain death via a conventional trap in the winter.

great trap 2008-02-09
(NOTE: this product rates a 5 if modified as suggested below. Without the simple modification, it can become lethal to the mice.)

________________

I am catching a mouse a day in our school. We name the mice like hurricanes, and we have gone thru the alphabet twice in 6 months! (We collect the mice in a hamster cage and release each Friday, using a DEEP painter's bucket and toilet paper cores for transfer, in case you're interested).

I love this thing (actually I bought two).

I had to make one minor modification - the lower edge of the trap door is very sharp - the mice try to push under and cut their noses - I added a piece of clear tape across the lower edge of each trap door to cover the edge and -- SHAZAM--, its now perfect.

Advice for the novice - when you release the mice (far from home or into a DEEP bucket), hold the door closest to you closed - the first time I unlocked both doors and the mouse instinctively ran out the upper door and up my arm. LOL

Not as good as they used to be 2008-01-21
We bought one of these on our honeymoon, decades ago, when a mouse took up residence in our car (!!). It worked great, and we've been using it ever since. Somehow the original one got lost last summer, and we ordered this one from Amazon.

Just goes to show they don't make 'em like they used to! The old one was a nice solid metal thing with welded joints and fit to close tolerances, the wires all clunked solidly into place, and the round rods were actually round. This one, while it still seems to basically work (so I did give it 3 stars rather than 2 or 1), is a flimsy thing, sort of cobbled together out of ultrathin metal, with wide slots between things that ought to fit snugly together (I'd swear there are places where a skinny mouse could just slip out), wires that get stuck and don't click down where they're supposed to be because they're too light, rods with flattened sides that make it really easy to set the thing stiffly in such a way that a mouse could easily get in and steal the bait without setting off the trap, and so on.

I wish I could get one made to the quality standards of 1983, but I guess this is the best we can do in the Brave New World...

Havahart cage 2008-07-12
Trap doesn't trigger when chipmonk enters cage. Can reach bait without going over the trigger mechanism.

Dissapointed with Product 2008-07-08
Item advertised as to be capable of catching and retaining chipmonks. It turned out to be too small. Also the two units were in pieces in the closed boxes. Not easy to fix. Only did one of the two.

Horrible for Small Animals 2008-07-07
This might work for bigger animals like squirrels and big rats, but it just didn't work for chipmunks. They'd eat the bait but never spring the trap, and I even tried one poster's suggestion of putting peanut butter on the bottom of the trap plate. No dice, I ended up just feeding chipmunks. Save your money if dealing with smaller pests.

Works great!!! 2008-06-29
Bought this trap to catch mice in my ivy next to my place. So far I've caught over 10 mice and the unit works great. The mice are not harmed, and it's easy to reset the trap. If you have difficulty setting this trap, you should consider hiring someone to solve your problem cause it's not difficult.

I would highly recommend this trap.

The One That Works 2008-05-29
I tried humane traps that I built myself, and I bought a few different kinds as well. The cheap plastic traps were terrible. The Havahart trap is the one that caught the mouse in my basement. It is made of galvanized metal so it should last a lifetime.
