2004-05-05Lastly, I wasted my money on this software, only to spend MORE money purchasing Windows XP Professional what I should have done in the first place. ARRGG one side note, linux wiped out my windows partition....
lovely "SUSe"

The first time i got interested to know about linux then i felt lucky becoz i had choosen SUSE 9.0 professional.
Its installation is very easy even for the naive users. Now i'm recommending it to everyone to feel it.
It outclassed "Mandrake" in many sections.Especially its(suse) system requirements are minimal and are compatible to PC users.
Excellent OS with great features

I recently performed a minor upgrade from SuSE 8.2 Pro to SuSE 9.0 Pro, and despite the seemingly small changes on the surface, underneath, it's obvious that much work has been done for this release. For one thing, the YaST2 setup tool is much more sophisticated in version 9.0, which makes updating packages and changing configuration files very straightforward. Additionally, SuSE 9.0 is the first Linux release I've run that's managed to get all of my devices right on the first try, and I really appreciate that.
If you're looking for a reasonably priced, robust, and stable alternative (or replacement!) for Windows, this is it.
Hello, people! It's not called "Open Source" for nothing!

I bought my copy of SuSE 9 Pro back in November. The only problem I had was that the N-Vidia graphics card I bought wasn't supported right from the installation. However, a quick trip to the N-Vidia website solved the problem with a driver program. (Hence the 4 stars and not 5.)
People, this is Linux. Just like all other Linux distros it falls under the GNU Public License, meaning it is open source software. If you have a problem, don't try calling the SuSE help desk! Go online, find a linux chat line, and ask the users to help you with your problem. We have ALL been there, and won't look down on you because you have a problem with a particular linux distro. Half the time you can find what the problem was to begin with on sourceforge.net. This might seem like a bit of work to some, but the rewards of Linux are well worth it! Rewards such as free office software, incredible graphics, powerful programming tools, ect...
Now that the sermon is over, back to the review. SuSE Linux 9.0 Professional ROCKS! There is almost too much being offered on this distro. Don't get me wrong, I will still use XP, (mainly just for games and surfing the internet) but I'm finding it harder and harder to justify using it. SuSE packs just about every tool you can think of in 9.0 Pro. I have two computers: one running SuSE Linux 9.0 which cost about $500 including all the software, and one running Windows XP that cost about $1600 (not including the games!). I could have the XP computer do as much as the SuSE machine, but I don't have an extra one or two thousand dollars lying around.
I think that to be an objective reviewer, I should say what I use the computer for: Web design (using GNU Emacs), programming (Java), office documents (Open Office), graphics design (Gimp), and learning MySQL. All of these and more are included with the package. You don't have to buy any of this software, even the SuSE linux distribution, but it sure will save you alot of time over downloading the programs yourself. So do yourself a favor, plunk down your money and buy it.
PS. Even my non-computer geek wife likes it!
Great Product - But Beware: Used item shipped w/o docs.

SUSE Linux is great. The boxed set should come with 2 manuals. BEWARE of ordering used sets from SarahGifts.com. I ordered a used set from SarahGifts.com and recieved 5 CD's on CD-R's and NO DOCUMENTATION. The whole reason I placed the order was for the documentation. Anyone can download the disks if you have enough bandwidth and don't care about support.
SuSE is Great!

I recently made the switch ove5r to Linux, and I have to say, after trying other distributions I have fallen in love w/ SuSE !! Very comfortable operating system once you get by the wind0ze stigmatism! It gives you you're office, multimedia, and graphics packages as well as games for those who enjoy gaming. I highly recommend it, just have patience and you'll be amazed at what Linux (GNU) has to offer!!

SuSE Happy!
Very good but frustrating at first.

This is a very complete operating system with a large library of free software. I had no trouble installing it (setup detected all my hardware on an IBM Thinkpad A20m), but was very frustrated at first with the interface. The documentation is difficult to read, and this is not for beginners.
After a few days of using Linux, I've found that I can do everything I need to do with it, and even run my windows programs on it. However, it took the better part of a day for me to understand how to configure things. The GUI they start you off with is terrible but by changing a few settings it becomes very functional and friendly.
Disappointing

After 4 days talking to their support group, it is finally known to me that they do NOT support 32-bit Seriel ATA Hard Drives. So I have wasted 4 evenings and countless phone calls with these guys before they figured that they don't support me, which is a fairly common hardware config now days. So beware!!
Absolutely wonderful Linux distribution.

I started using Suse 9.0 Pro as soon as it came out. All I can say is I absolutely love it. I use it at home and work for my desktops.
I see other reviews here saying it deleted my hard drive and other various things like it does not support NTFS etc. Well of course it doesn't support NTFS its not Windows and since MS has not released the NTFS specs how does anyone expect someone to decipher a convoluted file system like NTFS without any help? You have many file systems to choose from which are designed so that they don't need to be defragmented.
As for the people saying it deleted my hard drive. Was it Linux that changed your partition table by it's self or did you tell it to do it and didn't realize what you did? If you were going from Linux to Windows would there be a chance of you wiping your Linux partitions?
People that bought Suse Linux and complained that it's not Windows should have downloaded the evaluation version from the Suse website first. Then they would know it wasn't Windows and would not need to buy two operating systems. It's there, it's free, download it first. Where is the Windows demo?
Suse provides a nice Linux distribution with good configuration tools but Linux is not for everyone. (At least not yet.) Linux will do just about anything you want it to but you have to know how to drive it. Windows is easy to drive but won't do nearly as much.
Nothing but a horror story

Where can I start, this has to be like Windows with NO functionality. Whoever writes the five star reviews must be paid by the company suse. The operating system is a memory and cpu hog, the mulit-media works about as well as a toothache. Plus, my Windows partition, well it is gone now. This costed me a lot of money just to loose all my data, have a non-working pc and best of all it is useless except for sitting with a screen saver. Do yourself a BIG favor and stay away from SUSE!
