Poor design of the fence
2007-11-28
I just finished my first job with the product. As I was required to make several different cuts on this remodeling job I found the fence provided to be a piece of junk. First of all it was too narrow and the clamps on either end took too much time to set. I made my own which was two pieces of metal welded together at 90 degrees one fitting in the slot. the other end was clamped with a simple hand clamp. This worked well and I was able to change the fence rapidly. Outside of the fence problem the saw works well especially for the price. Would I buy it again yes indeed.
Good saw for the price. Small jobs only

I just used this to put granite and marble in a small bathroom with a neo-angle shower. I used about 200 sf of mostly marble, and did around 300 cuts. With the right blades, had no problem cutting through granite and marble tiles, and the cuts were very good in the marble, with little chipping.
I bought a section of 3/8 vinyl hose from Home Depot and stuck the pump in a 5 gallon bucket, worked fine. I kept the 5 gallon bucket on top of a second 5 gallon bucket upside down to increase water flow, not sure if this was vital or not. I wouldn't consider putting the pump in the tray below the saw table given all the marble dust I generated on just this one job.
I took two sawhorses and screwed 2 2x4's between them at just the right length and width to sit the tray in. Worked perfectly - no bending and the saw stayed in place quite nicely.
I used the saw to polish the edges of granite and marble, how to do that is another story but it did work well.
I built a 22 and 45 degree jig (from wood) that I screwed to the table to the right of the saw blade (screws from the bottom with large washers.) By putting the fence very near the blade I was easily able to miter lots of tiles.
I had a few angle cuts, was able to do them freehand without any problems. The marble was relatively smooth on the back so I had no issues with the table dimples, and was able to set the fence wherever I wanted.
I used hearing protectors, but the saw is loud, especially in a garage which is where I was working. It makes a huge mess - outside would be even better than a garage - there was water and wet marble dust everywhere.
Even with the sawhorses, the saw is small and light, so it's easy to move around, etc. I was afraid that with a larger saw I would have trouble getting it in and out of the car, etc.
The project was small, and I couldn't justify 2x or 3x the $129 I paid for this saw. But it's not perfect, and I wonder if I could have saved a few hours:
1. Cutting an 8" tile from a 12"x12" means setting the fence around 4" from the blade, which requires just a little more paying attention when marking the tiles.
2. No real way to easily cut semicircles, as for the shower control. It took me lots of straight cuts, and the way the saw is constructed, it's hard to hold the tile above the table to gnaw away at the cut.
3. The miter jigs worked well, but took some time to get adjusted to do what I wanted to do and I could only miter the edge, so I had to cut the tile to width first. So cutting these tiles was slow.
4. The way the fence is set up, the tightening knob is pretty small, a bit of a chore with heavy rubber gloves. A measuring scale along the front would have helped get the fence close before measuring/checking its position.
All in all, the bathroom came out very well but it took me longer to do the cutting than I would have liked. I do tile work infrequently, so this saw is probably OK for me, but if you have a big job or plan to do more than one room or one project you may want to seriously look at a more expensive unit.
it works

had no trouble with it so far, had it couple of months, much better than the ones that use the tub below that requires the use of a rain coat. cut thru 1/4" ceramic with no problems
Good overall, for the price

In the past, I've rented large saws for tile. They get pretty expensive and I'm always rushed to get the job done. I decided to buy this saw and give it a try after reading several reviews. The saw has plenty of power to handle 12x12 porcelain tiles, but you need to go easy. Replace the water in the tray regularly to keep it clean and the blade cool.
It's a bit messy, especially with larger tiles when the water will run off and not back into the tray.
Setting the fence can be a real pain. It also has a tendency to "pop off" if you don't get it set and tightened properly. It's also pretty easy to get an angled cut rather than a straight cut if you don't spend the time setting up the fence properly. To help, I cut some scrap plywood pieces the size I needed on my table saw and used them to help align the fence. It seemed to work pretty well.
I recently installed a backsplash where I cut about 400 tiles for a decorative pattern. The saw performed very well and I'm happy (again, just keep in mind; take your time to setup the fence properly).
I'd buy this saw again, and recommend it for someone who does occasional tile work. If you are serious at setting tile on a regular basis, I'd recommend looking for a higher quality saw with a sliding table and a much better fence system. I've found the key to quality is square fence setup and cutting at a slow pace.
Overall, good tool for the money

I am a residential contractor that purchased this saw for a small tile job (about 300 sf). Because we usually sub out our tile work, we didn't want to invest in a higher priced saw. As a professional contractor, I depend on my tools to perform well. I would have to say that I was disappointed in this tool. While I realize that this is a low price tile saw, I thought that MK only made good tools. There are a few reasons I didn't like this unit:
1. The fence system is terrible
2. It is difficult to get a straight cut.
3. Slow.........
Having said all this, I give the unit 2 stars because it might be a good option for DIY'ers that are doing a small remodeling project and don't want to invest in a higher priced saw. I also think that compared to the other units in this price range, this saw gives you more for your money. As for myself, I am in the market for more professional tool. Hope this helps...
Great little saw for the money!

I bought this saw 6 or 7 years ago when I had to lay 700 sq feet of tile in my new house. It performed like a champ! I also cut all the flagstones for the fireplace. I started building a new house a year or so ago and wanted stone columns in front. So once again, I pulled out my handy little wet saw and cut the stones. These were not nice even flag stones...they were irregular shaped very hard rock. Once again the saw did just great. Yesterday I needed to lay porcelain tile in the new bath and laundry and sort of figured the blade would not be up to the job after all that rock, but I was wrong. I cut all the tile including some very difficult cuts that required me to use the side of the blade to remove material. No problem....the saw did just fine.
Now for the complaint. The water basin is much too small and this designs means the pump will be recirculating filthy water over and over. So I mounted the saw on a table without the basin under it and set a large tub of water next to the table (outside of course...this was messy). All the dirty water ran off on the ground and the pump drew clean water for the blade. This worked perfectly well and I completed both tiling jobs easily. I am sure this saw will be good for many more tiling job. I am very glad I did not waste my money renting a saw!
Good Saw

I have made several cuts on 1/4" tile. I am very satified
with the performance. The saw cut the tile with ease.
The instructions in the owner's need to be re-written. They are not easy to follow. The saw was shipped with the
cooling hose disconnected from the blade guard. I made
several cuts before I realized it needs to be connected to
cool the blade. The wrong pump fitting was shipped. The
correct one was received 2 days after I called.
Final verdict, good saw worth the money, and good customer
service. Manual needs work.
Good Saw for Medium size Projects

I purchased this saw to cut 16x16 inch tiles. Here are some of my recomendations...
1. The first thing I recommend is to get a new high quality stone cutting blade. This is a must. The provided blade is ok, but after a few cuts, you notice the dullness coming out.
2. Purchase an additional extension for the water pump. The provided tubes are a little short. Clean water for the pump is a must!
3. Lastly, I dumped the little white tub and used a tall kitchen trash can and set the saw on top. I got tired of dumping the old water all the time :).
The motor on this little guy, is awesome. Another gentlemen complained about the rip guide fence, I found that making a line on my actual tile, was better. And the bubbled table top, well, turn the tile upside down and it glides very smoothly. making your cut line with a good carpenters pencil on the bottom side of the tile, will usually not come off when the water hits it anyways.
Hope this helps!
great saw great price

great to do back-splashes, bathrooms, and floors with tiles not larger than 8 inches. We have had our MK tile saw for over 5 years and replaced the brushes only once. It cuts smoothly, though that depends upon the blade YOU choose. The pump is low power, but if you need higher power you can replace the pump for higher quality. Over all this tool has been awesome and we still use it all the time for any smaller jobs. If you have big jobs with large tile then my recommedation is to purchase or rent a table saw.
Disappointment

Product is not up to the advertisement on
Amazon. This identical tile saw is somewhat cheaper
on other tool sites. The shipping costs on Amazon were
satisfactory, however.
For the money, the quality product should be higher. Home
Depot sells the same saw for $94. NO shipp[ing required.
Check it out!
