Exactly what it says it is. 2006-09-10
A SERIAL CABLE. Nothing more, nothing less. If you already have one, you don't need this. If you don't have a serial port. Don't buy this. Simple. Great for people with a Foretrex 101, which does not come with a cable.

Don't expect Garmin to make a USB cable, the Foretrex can't support it (the port is a simple serial port). You can always get a Serial to USB adapater and try that if you need to.

No point in trashing this cable because it isn't what you're looking for or you have one already.

Foretrex cable with limited ability. 2006-05-01
I have 2x Foretrex 201 units, where i have to share the data between them regularly. The units were shiped without any software, but i found EasyGPS (freeware) to work great with the units, and with keeping a back-up on the pc. I can now even download waypoints from the web into my Foretrex 201's. I have now upgraded to a new laptop, without a serial port, and i am dissipointed not to find a usb replacement cable from the manufacturer. The GPS units though, are working great.

Cable fine for foretrex 101 2004-10-13
To correct the earlier comment, this cable can be useful in certain cases. I bought this cabel to use with my foretrex 101, which doesn't ship with a cable. It works fine, though make sure it is pushed all the way in. No "charging base" is needed to use this cable with the foretrex 101 since the foretrex uses AAA batteries.

New technology needed for PC interface 2004-06-18
If the PC connection would be updated to USB (my computer does not even have a serial connection), they could even add the ability to use the USB power to recharge the Forerunner. That would be Really useful!

Spare Parts 2004-03-28
This is nothing more than a replacement cable for the serial cable that is already included with the Garmin Forerunner 201. You will only need it if you lose your existing cable. However, for the price they really should have included the additional charger that actually connects the unit to this cable. With your forerunner and this cable alone, there is still absolutely nothing you can do unless you have the charging base (there are two cables that connect your Garmin to your computer).

That means that this product is only useful for people who have lost one of the cables, but still have the other. What's more, it's an outdated serial connection, which means very slow transfers. The least they could do was offer a USB connection if they're going to sell this separately.

waste 2008-06-19
This item was a waste for me. It does not even fit my Cpu. I think it should come with an adapter with a female end and a male end to be compatable with all Cpu's

works perfectly 2008-04-07
i had a lot of trouble to find the right interface for my garmin, but this one worked very nicely on my pc XP.

PUSH the plug into the GPS HARD!!! 2008-03-26
Thank you other reviewers!!! I said to myself, I said, I can't get this thing to work. I'm going out on Amz to find out what the other reviewers recommended, because I bet they've ironed out the bugs. You sure did. All I had to do was give the little jack and extra push in really tight, and the download to Street Atlas went like a charm.

BTW, I bought the Iogear USB to Serial interface cable on Amz. I have Windows Vista, so I got the .zip file Iogear provides. It has all Windows drivers. The Vista drivers worked great. Nice of Iogear to support all the Windows versions in one handy download. Wish I could say the same for Kingston flash drives, but I digress.

Anyway, I am beginning to find that these reviews of technical products on Amazon are more helpful than the manufacturers' websites. This is especially true of Garmin.

Thanks again, everybody. Sure is fun when something works. I'm enjoying this Foretrex 101.

Works great 2007-01-18
Great cable, just make sure to push it all of the way into the GPS device, or it won't download to the computer.

It works, but Serial ports are outdated!!! Why no USB??? 2007-01-09
I had to spend another $35 at Radio Shack to get a Serial to USB converter cable to plug this into my laptop. Nobody uses serial anymore... Garmin ought to sell an updated cable (USB) for the ForeTrex units...
