A great multi-input monitor
2009-04-20
A great monitor with multiple input formats, too bad it is no longer manufactured.
Outstanding Warranty Service

I bought this unit about 18 months ago and use it primarily as a TV. It works fine. The other day the screen started acting up--it would go black after being on for a few hours, and if I turned it off and back on it would blank after a few seconds. I went to the Samsung Web site that night, and it said this was probably a bad backlight. So I submitted an online service request.
Samsung called the next morning to say that they would be shipping a brand new replacement unit to the nearest UPS Store. i would be able to pick it up in a few days and drop off the old one.
Sure, it would have been better if it never failed at all, but it is hard to see how they could do a better job of honoring the warranty. Great job, Samsung!
Nice LCD TV for the money!

I really like this LCD television. The picture is clear and the colors are vibrant. The remote is on the small side and takes a certain touch to use it. The only problem that I had was programing it to our cable. My son came home and fixed it's for me and it fine. Can't beat the price and quality for the money.
Good price - poor picture

So far I am very dissatified with the picture quality on this unit. I have adjusted the brightness all the way up to 100%, but the picture is still very dark. Adjusting contrast does not help. I have not had an opportunity to contact Customer Support on this issue yet. So I still have hope that it can be resolved.
Here's what you need to know

I plan on using this in my kitchen as both a PC and a TV. The picture for TV is better than my old TV.
The documentation is the main shortcoming of this product. I needed to access its menus to configure the input, and figuring out how to get up and down in the menu is a secret. If you download the manual from Samsung, you'll see that it originally had a more complex remote. Going up and down was probably easier with the other remote.
Here's the secret to getting up and down in the menu with the slim remote. You'll figure out right away that the volume buttons take you left and right in the menu. To go up and down, do this:
1. Press menu.
2. Press vol up or down to go left or right
3. Press menu.
4. Press the down arrow.
5. Press menu.
In other words, you have to press Menu every time you switch from left or right and then up and down. Menu also serves as the ENTER button to save your selection.
GREAT FOR THE OFFICE OR HOME

Samsung SyncMaster 710MP is a TFT-LCD monitor that takes the concept of multi-tasking to an entirely new level. This 17-inch flat-panel display functions as a computer monitor, a TV and a video monitor - all in one. And all this versatility comes with the clearest pictures, sharpest images and most vivid colors you can imagine. The 710MP delivers next-generation TV functionality with its built-in TV tuner. The 710MP features a 450:1 contrast ratio, 270 cd/m2 brightness, 1280 x 1024 resolution, 0.264 pixel pitch and a viewing angle of 150/120 degrees. It also includes a remote control, RCA video & audio, S-Video and a built-in antenna connector to accommodate RGB analog input and NTSC. And thanks to the 710MP's slim, sleek design - plus its wall mount capability - you can enjoy an uncluttered desktop instead of one that's overrun by multimedia equipment.
Not as advertised
2005-09-07
I purchased this mainly to be used as a monitor, and to be used once in a while as a TV when traveling in the RV. It advertised as having PIP, but it does not have this capability. No support on this issue from the manufacture. I am pleased with the overall performance of the monitor/tv.
Nice, but..............
2005-07-18
I am impressed with this as a monitor, lesser so as a TV. My biggest gripe is that I was looking through the manual and the picture on the box and the remote is vastly different. I was given a chintzy credit card remote, instead of the one pictured. The battery requirements are different and they look infinately different with regard to size and capabilities. I called Samsung and they told me that I could order one to match what's in the picture and I do not look at this as a viable solution. I am a rechargeable battery user (thinking of the enviornment and cost for batteries), but cannot recharge the button battery enclosed with this remote. This does not sit well. WYSIWYG is usually the case, but in this case, I feel deprived, as most will tell you, bigger is better. In the case of the remote, it is probably 1/4 the size. Maybe they ran out when they got to packaging mine, but at least they could give some compensation.
Pros:
The monitor is really quite nice and fits in well with where I am placing it, on my bedroom wall in my motorhome, which will serve as my monitor for my laptop and television (with many devices plugged in).
Sounds better than any other LCD monitor with speakers that I have ever listened to, without distortion at it's highest level. This is certainly a bonus!
Set-up was a breeze, TV and monitor.
Looks Great, cosmetically!
Monitor picture is stellar!
3 year warranty.
Cons:
REMOTE! If I knew the remote was going to be like this, I would not have purchased this! Again, this purely deceptive from the manual and what is pictured.
TV picture looks dull, washed out, lacking vibrance, but as with most combo monitors with TV tuners, picture is not spectacular.
Would be sweet if they had included another composite input. (2 instead of 1).
All in all, I am pleased with this monitor for what I paid, but with the notable exceptions mentioned above.
Defective after 2 weeks
2005-07-12
I bought this monitor through Amazon. It worked fine for two weeks, but then it started having serious trouble. All dark, solid colors (especially black) appeared bright green no matter what color settings were applied. Because the online retailer's (JR Electronics) return policy was up, I'm still dealing with Samsung trying to get it replaced. In the meantime I bought a Sharp to replace it, and I would recommend a Sharp model to anyone shopping for an LCD monitor/TV.
No Picture-in-Picture

I'd be curious to know how the other reviewer got picture-in-picture to work on the 710MP. I am told there is no such feature.
