Bad, Bad, Bad Supplier

No Stars would be better. My husband bought me this unit for Christmas. This was his first online shopping experience and he nor I will ever shop from Office Depot, Tech Depot etc..ever again! You think you are buying from Office Depot when your item get shipped from Tech Depot who then denies that they are the same company when you call them. It is impossible to know ahead of time but, they will not return ANY Toshiba products even if they are defective. They did apoligize that Amazon has an incorrect return policy posted on their site.....go figure! Do not purchase from them unless you want absolutely NO support.
Cool toy but limited

After reading all the positive reviews, I decided to buy this model instead of the 2700 (although there appears to be very little difference between the two). Upon opening the box and testing the unit, I immediately noticed a 'hung' pixel in the upper left of the screen. It stays lit (white) on many scenes and becomes annoying at times. I was told that this is not uncommon and that another unit may exhibit a similar flaw.
The picture is very vivid once you get the proper alignment between yourself and the screen. Any movement up or down will necessitate a change in the screen angle to keep the picture quality the same. So, if you watch it from your lap in bed as I do, this may take some getting used to. Also, there are no color or picture adjustments that would allow you to customize the output to suit your tastes. I found this very limiting because some scenes are just too dark and the 4-way brightness adjustment is just not enough to get it right.
As far as the sound is concerned, the speakers are very weak and offer virtually no bass whatsoever (even though they are advertised as bass reflex). Headphones add a lot, but I also noticed quite a bit of distortion. Again, there are no sound controls that would otherwise give you control over this characteristic.
So, although others love this model, I cannot give it super high marks. Oh yes, the battery works fine and it has a remote that you need for many of the 'features', which seems ridiculous for a portable. I guess if you plan to use it to drive your home theater then the remote makes more sense, even though this model doesn't.
At $299 this would be a great value. Above that, it's average at best.
Poor quality player for price!

Ok....I read all reviews about the 2600 before I bought it and was really looking forward to purchasing a high quality machine. Boy was I disappointed. The picture is heads above the other portable DVD's I have looked at, there's no argument about that. I find fault with this machine, in that, to change cinema screens you have to stop the machine. I hooked the player up to my television and the Video out, which is NOT seperate from the audio, (you have one plug in to the AV and three plugs going to audio and video)did not work. I hooked my daughters Polaroid DVD player up and it worked flawlessly! My Toshiba costs over twice what I paid for her's. Last, the navigation of the Toshiba is very hard to manuever around. They should have made things a lot simpler to get around this machine. I was really disappointed in this product. I sent it back immedietely.
Not a good present!

Polysilicon TFT is much better than amorphous TFT
2004-11-26
Most of the TFT LCD is in a precise sense "amorphous silicon TFT LCD". This portable player uses "low temperature polysilicon TFT LCD" that is in principle much better in term of response time, contrast, and color reproductivity as mobility of electron is much faster. Toshiba is not only manufacturing DVD players but also is one of a few companies that can produce mid size LTPS (low temperature poly silicon) TFT in Asia.
I recommend this portable DVD as qualitywise this is in principle much better than others since other portable DVD players do not use polisilicon TFT yet. It seems that good impressions of other reviewers are coming from this aspect. There is a guaranteed and electro-technological reason why this is better than others.
Question
2004-11-19
I bought this based on the reviews that I read here and I was not disappointed. There were quite a few more parts than I expected in the box, but it was good once I sorted them out.
Question: On the front of the box (and also any other pictures I've seen) - they show the picture on the screen going all the way from top to bottm and side to side. In other words - no horizontal or vertical gray bars.
I've tried all different settings to try and get the bars to go away with no luck. When I play a widescreen - the bars are top and bottom. When I play a full screen - the bars are left and right.
Is this normal or do I have a defective unit? Or is there a way to change it that I just can't figure out? I called customer service and they were unhelpful.
If you bought this, could you please let me know if yours does the same? Thanks!

Is there a way to hook up a MiniDV camcorder to the player? How about an Xbox? If so What cables would I need.
Best Player For The Money
2004-09-19
I looked around for about a month before I made my purchase of the Toshiba. There are a lot of players out there but after reading all the reviews and going to the stores to see them work the Toshiba was hands down the best for the money. Samsung was a close second but what I liked was that the picture on the Toshiba was brighter and sharper. The Toshiba also has a better angle so two people can watch a movie together with not having to sit on top of each other. The sound is great and with the head phones on you really could hear the surrond sound. When I was done buying my case , ear phones and airplane adapter it cost me a little more but well worth it. I really can't see why you would want to go any larger and spend more money because they are getting to the point that for a couple hundred more you can get a laptop. You will not be disapointed with this player.
