Good value for the money

I was planning to upgrade my old Win2k laptop's USB 802.11b wireless adapter, and I wanted the replacement unit to be a Cardbus model, 802.11g and able to handle WPA. This card fit the profile, although I was a bit worried reading the other reviews that described issues with driver installation and high processor usage.
I first tried to install the drivers found on the CD supplied in the box - after restarting the computer and inserting the card (following the leaflet that I found in the box), I was greated with a "no compatible driver found" error message. I had already observed the Reg.exe process using 50% of the CPU resources, so killing that process was the first step - that didn't help.
I uninstalled the driver, and downloaded the latest driver from the manufacturer's web site - after installation and restart, I inserted the card and saw it being immediately recognized by the system.
Still, the CPU usage was high, even without Reg.exe (which wasn't there anymore with the updated driver). A quick look through the processes revealed two that were CPU hogs - wlancfg4 (which was a relic from the previous adapter's drivers, although it didn't draw so many resources with the other adapter), and D-Link configuration utility - listed as airplus.exe. You can do fine without the last one, once you've configured your network.
Doing that reduced the idle load on the CPU to 5-6% - much better.
One other annoyance with the card is the long recovery time, when the computer comes out of standby - it takes around a minute for the wireless network to be functional. The old adapter would re-establish the connection in just a few seconds. True, the old one was using WEP, and the D-Link card is configured to use WPA, but still, it seems to be taking too much time.
But even with those small issues, it is still a good deal - so if you're not afraid of searching for new drivers, and maybe doing a little bit of tweaking and reading, you should consider this adapter.
Cost and Perfomance effective...

This card worked out of the box on my laptop running Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) Ubuntu 7.10 (PC Edition).
It was recognized as:
Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC [168c:001a] (rev 01)
Subsystem: D-Link System Inc AirPlus G DWL-G630 [1186:3b08]
Have not any issues for two weeks (in contrast to the acx100-based card I had before).
Great for older lap-tops

I purchased this for my mother's older Dell Latitude laptop (only 8G's on the drive, with less than 1GHz cpu!) I needed these spec's and the 'g' type for her older laptop, newer home network & desktop, and something that she didn't have to configure or worry about, as she's barely computer literate (she's in her 60's.)
This product was a breeze to install, and once you've adjusted your internet connections settings, connecting to any available (free) wireless source can be automatic. Yes, I did have to enter her wireless home network key (luckily, she keeps everything neatly filed away, so have that handy when you are running the initial set-up; otherwise, you'll only be able to connect to unlocked public networks.)
The software is very intuitive and simple to use; just install the software first, turn off the computer, plug the card in, restart, and type in your network key (for secure home networks) and you're done.
I would recommend this card for any similar applications involving older computers using lower processing speeds. If you're running a newer, faster lap-top, then go with a faster card of course.
Also, the card was delivered in an expedient amount of time in perfect condition.

Recently I installed D Link DWL-G630 54Mbps wireless card in my HP Pavilion Notebook with Windows 2000 Professional. After installing the driver included on the CD supplied, the card worked but upon second bootup the driver failed to initialize and also failed at each bootup thereafter. The problem was easily solved by downloading the latest driver from DLink website. Now it works well and provides reasonably fast wireless internet connection. Best of all, at less than $10 plus shipping, it is a bargain!
Not Working

I bought this card for my laptop which has Windows NT Workstation 4 Service Pack 4 installed. Cannot get it to work. Keep getting an error message and when I contact D Link I get a response that says it is for Windows XP. So evidently they are not reading the information I emailed them. Have been trying to install this for 4 days with no luck.

I've got an older laptop, dual-booting XP Pro and Kubuntu 8.04. Booted into XP, installed the drivers, installed the card, and everything works just fine. Booted into Kubuntu with the card still inserted, and didn't even have to install anything -- the card was recognized, configured, and surfing instantly.
I would highly recommend this card for Linux users...
Great Wireless Cardbus Adapter for my Linux Laptop
2008-04-28
I bought the D-Link DWL-G630 in the hopes that I could use the native Atheros driver under Linux on an old laptop I am resurrecting. I was glad to see that the card I recieved was the C2 hardware revision, which does indeed use the Atheros chipset. (My understanding is that some revs of this card use a different chipset.)
I put the card in the slot, booted up, loaded the Atheros driver module, configured my WEP, and BINGO, I was online. Although Linux has many strong suits, wireless networking is not one of them. I was glad that this D-Link card worked so painlessly.
This may be a trivial point, but I love the color scheme of the D-Link label on the card. It's a touch retro, I think, which appeals to me.
I would also like to put in a plug for the particular Amazon vendor I chose: Compuwise Expert Solutions, for amazingly low price and exceptionally fast shipping.
I am extremely pleased with this purchase, and I highly recommend this wirelesss adapter.

works great. Used the airport kext from 10.4.8 and it works fine. only problem is you need to use network diagnostics to connect to WPA networks.
