No issues so far 2007-08-23
Haven't had any problems with this so far. Wheels seems fine, contrary to some other reviews. It is certainly a heavy lug - I barely managed to get it up a flight of stairs by myself, and that was only by wheeling it up one stair at a time, and I was sweating bullets by the end.

No bolts? 2007-05-20
My MAC5200 made a lot of racket when I first started it. I shut it down and checked it over, then tryed again. More racket until I put my hand on the compressor unit. It got quiet. Checking some more, I found that there were no mounting bolts to mount the compressor to the frame. I called Makita and they couldn't believe it. I could hardly believe it myself. They sent the four bolts to me overnight. I couldn't get them in because of the plastic heat shield. Its holes didn't line up properly, but the holes are not critical to holding the heat shield in place, so I burned the holes bigger with a soldiering iron. After that the bolts went in easily. Now my MAC5200 purrs sweetly. I love it. I have not had a problem with the wheels on my machine. It pumps the tank to 150 psi in about two minutes and will hold the pressure overnight with little if any leakage. I run roofing and framing nail guns and other air tools with it. As I said, I love it.

Great Air Compressor! 2007-04-28
The Makita MAC 5200 is a well designed product, easy to maneuver on the ground with folding handle, hooks for hose storage, two handles on each side for lifting, and a storage compartment for smaller items, which is a real plus.
As to the wheels, I see no problem with mine (bought compressor in 4/07). Yes, they have a plastic center, but the tire itself is at least 1/2" solid rubber and will probably outlast the compressor.
A very careful inspection revealed no shipping damage. There was some shroud vibration on startup, quit after the 20 min. break in period.
I am very happy with the compressor and would buy an other one without hesitation.

SOUNDS LIKE SHE'S GONNA BLOW 2007-02-13
Received my "MAC" last week. After being back-ordered for 2 weeks finally arrived. To my relief after reading the reviews, it was in perfect shipping condition. Not a scratch. Set it up, plugged it in and whoa!! It sounded like it was going to rattle itself apart. Ran it according to breakin specs. hoping it would quiet down. It never did. The plastic shroud rattles from the compressor vibration. It is almost unbearable. It could be the cooling fan out of balance. Not sure what to do at this point.

Item is not 1720 RPM as described 2007-02-02
Amazon's description describes this as running at 1720 RPM which is equal to Makita's MAC2400 product which runs at half this one's speed (and is quieter as a result).

NOTE THIS ITEM RUNS AT 3420 RPM AND HAS A SLIGHTLY LARGER BORE THAN THE MAC2400 - SO EXPECT IT TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY LOUDER.

Very Satisfied 2008-05-03
The cardboard package was ripped but everything was ok. I have a small compressor without a tank and this Makita is quieter! I don't know if they changed wheels but mine were fine. Haven't really tested it completely, but so far so good! Thanks, Makita

Specs 2008-04-10
What's with the 3 Horsepower rating? 13.8 Amps at 120 Volts = 1656 Watts. 1656 Watts x 0.00134 = 2.22 Horsepower. There are always some losses at the motor so it is impossible to get more than 2 horsepower optimistically. Why the misleading spec? Makes me wonder what else is misleading about the specs? 1.5 - 2 HP is good for a portable. Why not call it for what it is?

A Fine Home Compressor 2007-12-05
I've been using this compressor for 1 year now. Though some of the early reviews mentioned shipping and wheel damage, I had no such experience. Like many of the newer reviews, it arrived in fine shape so I suspect that the packaging has evolved over time.

Initially I bought it to work on a truck with some serious air-sucking impact wrenches. If you're in a closed garage, it can be loud if you're close. Generally it is located across the garage from me, and I just let a 3/8" air hose lie across the garage floor.

Performance has always been spectacular. I suspect I will never need another compressor.

Great Compressor 2007-11-19
I have had this comppressor over a year and have had no problems with it. It is built and designed well. I wish it was little quiter but I have heard worse. All direct drive compressors are on the loud side.

Don't believe everything you read like I did 2007-09-29
My unit arrived in fine condition (box was not damaged either) as some report. I also don't have any problem with the wheels like some reviewers, but I rarely move the unit. My biggest beefs are this unit is extraordinarily loud, to the point where I now use it as little as possible. The tank is small too, and the unit cycles on constantly, although that's not an issue I can fault. It's also requires oil, and remembering to check and top off is a bother, although a small one. To recap, I can't complain about the unit's tank size or the fact that it requires oil--I knew what I was buying--but those are considerations if you're considering buying an AC, nonetheless. It seems awfully well made, which is really about all the good I can say about it. I regret buying it--I was swayed in part by the reviews here and I was not as informed about these things as I thought. A bit wiser and sadder, I don't think most of the reviewers know what they're talking about and are merely looking to rationalize their purchase.
