Expensive paperweight 2008-02-20
I agree with the other gentleman. IF you can get it to calibrate and stay on, it will give you a rough idea as to where to hammer a small nail through the drywall to actually find the stud. But that's a big IF. I ended up throwing mind in the garbage out of sheer disgust. I'm going back to using my old 20+ year old Zircon StudSensor II that I have to manually calibrate. Even though I still had the original packaging, I could not even think of selling this on eBay or even giving it to the local thrift store.

Good tool 2007-07-28
I'm mostly happy with this tool.

Pros:

* The laser works well.
* The tool is light weight

Cons:

* The stud sensor is not overly accurate, and gives about a 1/2" range for the edges of the studs
* I continually bump the laser button when using the stud-sensor mode
* The level bubbles are small, and not overly easy to read

Overall, it's a great tool. I'm glad I purchased it, but it's not a five-star item.

Not even a good paper weight! 2006-04-23
This thing couldn't detect a stud if you showed it a picture of a 2x4 beforehand. I've had this thing for almost two years and have never had it reliably detect a stud. I can't believe Stanley would put such a piece of junk on the market. I'm through with their products. Don't waste your money. Look for another manufacturer.

Finding studs is a breeze. 2006-03-08
In typical stud finders, you have to watch lights "beep up" to find a stud. This product gives you a cool graphic when you find the edge of the stud making it extremely easy to use.

A good (not great) multi-purpose tool 2004-11-02
This is a good combination for the average homeowner, but there are certainly better stud finders (from Zircon and Strait Line) and laser levels. The drawbacks are the laser only goes 20 feet (which will suffice for hanging pictures and other light duty tasks) and the stud sensor/metal sensor/wire sensor only scans to 3/4" depths. The positives are that it is very easy to use, combines multiple functions in one unit, has an LCD display and includes to hangers so you can set your laser line and get to work. All in all it is a good buy for the average homeowner due to its multifunction, two tools for one price package.
