A good product for your dollar! 2006-07-06
I've had the Mintek MDP-5860 for exactly one year now and i have gotten my money's worth. I'll list the positives and negatives of this unit.

Positives:

The 5" screen has great picture sharpness, color and contrast
(which is adjustible)

The adjustable screen (forward & back) is handy when sitting or lying.

The zoom feature is handy for those who have troble viewing letterbox films on this 5" screen.

This little player can play almost every cd/dvd format.

The small size fits almost anywhere for easy travel.

The virtual suround is fantastic and clear.

Negatives:

The battery life is very short (Roughly 2 hrs.)

The external inputs or on the rear of the player, making it impossible to connect devices during travel.

The wireless remote runs on a lithum battery for longer life, but can be hard to replace.

All in all, i believe you get what you pay for, and you get exactly that in the Mintek MDP-5860. If you comapare this player to other 5" portables out there will you find better? Probably, but not for the price. What you get is a nice little player with some nice bells and wistles for a bargin price.

A Solid Product 2006-07-01
I have drug this thing over half the world in the 2 months that I have owned it (Germany, Iraq, Texas) and have had no problems. I take it to the gym and put it on the treadmill for longer runs. The sound quality is not good on the speakers, but I use headphones anyway. The screen does not fold out all the way back, but enough that it can set on the magazine rack of most treadmills/bikes/elliptical machines. Battery life is short--1 movie only--and charger takes only 110 power. Buy the extended life battery although it doubles the cost of the machine.

Cheaply but adequately made 2005-12-31
I've bought three of these now. First I got the MDP-5861, which is the widescreen version. It lasted a year, which is not bad considering my then-three-year-old was its biggest user. The screen broke but it still works with an external monitor.

I bought another for a friend, and it still works, then I bought the 4:3 (standard screen) 5860 as a replacement.

Treat it gently and with a bit of luck it should last a few years. It's not bad for the price.

VERY PLEASED 2005-02-17
When I purchased the DVD player it was MUCH cheaper than any other product(although prices have come down since then). It works with the battery, in your car lighter, and you can plug it into the wall. I purchased it for a plane trip with my 3 year old but it has worked well and he has yet to break it(and he is very good at breaking things)

Speakers won't work after 5 months 2005-01-24
A few weeks after I bought it the open button would get stuck so the door wouldn't stay down. It's a reoccurring problem, but so far I've been able to unstick it enough for the door to close... but it's not easy.

The speakers just died on it after it was only 5 months old. I do not play it loud, I don't abuse it, & I don't even use it often. AMF, I take good care of my gadgets. The sound from the earphone jack also died at the same time. So it means the audio amp chip inside is blown. Fortunately, I had a high-impedance set of earbuds with a volume control built in the line lying around. I was able to plug it in the audio out in the back of the player to get sound from there.

Unfortunately the battery pack covers those output jacks when one is going portable. So the only way I could get sound now, is without the battery.

Great Quality for the Money 2004-12-29
I bought this for my son as a Christmas gift and showed it around at work before I wrapped it. Everyone who saw it was surprised by the clear picture. The sound that comes out of the player isn't the greatest but plug in a good pair of headphones and it is improved ten-fold. The DVD player comes with a car adapter, battery, and AC/DC plug for power so you can use it anywhere. It fits perfectly in a small CD holder I bought for a few bucks and that is convenient to pack or carry. My son absolutely loved this gift!

Great buy for the price 2004-12-07
Yes, the screen is small, but that's also the appeal. A portable DVD player isn't so portable if the screen is 7 or 8 inches and it comes with a huge bag for carrying everything. I can hold this 5" Mintek in an old Discman case, so it easily fits into a backpack or carry-on for travel.

I've watched several movies at just under 2 hours and had no problems with the battery (I haven't tested it to see if it goes the full 2.5 hrs as advertised). I never had any problems with skipping or the battery dying prematurely.

I even used it a couple times as a DVD player on a larger tv and it works great. I have also played many CD's on it. The thing I like best is that any cables/adaptors you could possibly need are included.

Sure, the units 2 and 3 times more expensive are likely better in quality, but in terms of quality for the dollar, I'm very happy with the Mintek 5860.

Stay Away! 2004-12-02
I bought this item around the holiday season for my wife. Around August we used it for the first time and were pleased with it and started to use it regularly. After a month of use, the screen one day just shut down. It will not work. I called the company and they informed me that while the product was under warranty the labor is not. They said the labor cost is $90. Considering the fact that the whole player only cost me $105, this is an outrage. They are a cheap junky company, who is looking to make a quick buck at no cost.

waste of time and money 2004-10-31
the battery doesn't last through a whole movie. pretty much have to use the car adaptor, works better that way. Even after using the ac adaptor it still doesn't play the movie without skipping (disc are clean). I wouldn't recommend this product.
