Great graphics. Interesting story line.Seems like it would appeal to multiple age groups - haven't finished playing it but my son and I are both hooked.

Enjoyable, Visually Stunning, Too Hard

When I look back at Myst IV, the first thing that comes to mind is "dang, that was a hard game". In my opinion, Myst 1, 3, & 5 were a bit too easy and Riven was just perfect. The puzzles in Myst IV are not intractable, but they will stump you for longer than you like. I like a good challenge in an adventure game since they have little replay value, but this one was quite frustrating at times.
So I was disappointed? No, not at all! For one, this game is gorgeous and contains a lot of variety in the environments. There are four main areas in this game. The first and last are decent and the other two (which you'll spend most of your time in) are absolutely beautiful. The jungle looks very realistic and contains a wonderful blend of colors and a motley of very interesting wild life. The monkeys are the cutest thing I've seen in a Myst game. It almost makes you forgive them for being part of one of the cruelest puzzles in the game. The other main area, Spire, is the jungle area's antithesis. It's a set of big rocks suspended in the sky and the whole world is dark and grim. The area contains a nice mix of blue and black and the whole area has a feeling of both sadness and menace. Also, there are quite a few little graphical details which enhance the experience. I particularly liked the chess theme which popped up on occasions (I'm a chess nerd).
Another thing that I liked about the game is the same thing that I complained about: the puzzles. Despite the warnings, most of the puzzles are very well-done. The extreme difficulty comes from two or three virtually impossible puzzles. Until I got to the point where I had no choice but to solve those, the puzzles were enjoyable. Also, the two "middle" areas can be "beaten" in any order and you can go back and forth. These two places each contain one puzzle which is too hard, so you can always put one away and do something else. Also, it's simply enjoyable just travelling around and enjoying the scenery.
Okay, back to the negatives. As you have surely heard already, the game will take quite a chunk of hard disk space. Also, some people have trouble running the game on certain hardware, although I've had no issues and I have what you would probably consider a budget computer. Another problem is the length. Despite the amount of hard disk space the game requires, it's not very long. Oh, it WILL take a while to beat, but that's only because you'll be stuck on the same puzzles for days. I think that the length may be the reason the difficulty was amped up so much from the relatively easy Myst III. It hides the true length of the game.
Okay, I guess I just made it seem like I don't like the game, but I do. It's the most visually stunning of all of the Myst games (including Myst V), the puzzles are well-done with two or three very frustrating exceptions, and it's my second favorite Myst game behind Riven. Riven is a classic (get the dvd version though, the constant disc-swapping made the original release annoying). That game should be a higher priority, but if you already own it, give this one a try.
the most beautiful

also, the most difficult (but you knew that! Didn't you?)... Rand and Robyn Miller, after taking a break (they weren't directly involved with Myst 3), return to drop the most beautiful chapter in the series on you. The environments are truly stunning, with lots of little details that make them seem all the more real- in particular I liked the field of focus option, where objects close to your eye would be subtly blurred unless you scroll directly over them, then they snap into focus..
The story is also a little more engaging too, as Atrus daughter, Yeesha gets kidnapped, and you need to bring her home.. the emotional depth adds alot to this one.
By the way, did I mention the puzzles are TOUGH! lol. But there's nothing like the feeling of having figured them out. And there is a help option, thankfully, and a camera to photograph those hard to remember glyphs...
A work of art.
avoid this title like the plague on X-Box, though! Screen resolution differences made small writing and switches really hard to see, and the mouse to X-Box controller mapping was a mess.
Most interesting Myst I've played

Ok, I was fascinated by the original Myst back when it came out. However, after awhile it got boring, too many puzzles and, for me, not enough storyline aspects. I have the same feelings about Riven and Exile. Myst Revelation is much better from this standpoint, and the in-game journal/camera makes things much easier as far as getting the clues one needs (I'm horrible at sketching). There is also much more information surrounding the characters, giving more dimension to the mystery. For whatever reason, the puzzles are easier for me in this game, although it may be because I'm more engaged with getting to the next step to find more clues.
Haven't finished a full game yet, just having fun taking my time to get there. Beautiful graphics, game works perfectly on my Vista platform.

One of the most outstanding Adventure games that I've ever played. I have a library of Myst games. Outstanding!
amazing!

If you've ever played a myst game before and enjoyed it, there is no question. BUY THIS GAME! Some of the puzzles are extremely hard, and you have to make sure you download the patches from the games website. The environments are so detailed and lush I can't imagine how it must have been created. The movements appear much clearer than the movements in Exile, with so many detailed moving objects. A great new feature is a camera that you can use during the game to record important clue images in your environments. Some of the acting is a little corny but that kind of just adds to the surreal feel. All in all this is a GREAT game. Be prepared to play for months.
Engaging and immersive...

Just finished Revelation. I can't say I did it 100% on my own, but with a little assistance from time to time from Internet walkthroughs, I am satisfied with the outcome. Some of the puzzles in this installment are difficult. Just a hint; take care to record everything throughout the game, since the later solutions were found in seemingly obscure clues in other ages earlier in the game. A nice touch on Revelation is the snapshot camera. Potential clues to later puzzles can be photographed and a device keeps track of your snapshots. Endlessly useful and allows for many less written notes than earlier Myst installments. My problem was that I didn't record some key clues in the form of snapshots, so I was missing this information later in the game. My recommendation is: take photos of everything. The movie cuts in Revelation draw you into the Myst world and the use of live actors in well played cut scenes really make you feel like a part of the story. Even with the occasional help, I still felt like I accomplished something at the end of the game. Movement through the ages in Revelation are by click and redraw, but the ability to look around is better than earlier Mysts. There is plenty of live action rather then just being presented with photographs. Each installment gets better and better in this regard.
Not for the whole family

Great storyline, great puzzles, great game altogether.
However, I'm surprised to find profanity (Achenar's Journal) and somewhat disturbing images of of a "kidnapping" (Memory Chamber flashbacks) in this game. Did they 'really' have to put this in there?
