I got this because I couldn't find any Lamaze classes in my area and this was the only DVD I could find. Even so, it's quite dated (80s, I think), so that was a turn off at first, especially for my husband who was already was skeptical of "that schmarmy crap". I was hoping for something a bit more engaging.

Nail in the coffin for True, Quality Childbirth Education

Made in 1983, these so-called caring childbirth educators pooled their resources and gave birth to this movie. For almost 25 years this film has greatly contributed to couples thinking they can get something for nothing (watch a video=know how to birth the Lamaze way). REAL Lamaze training is out there and there is no substitute for the personal attention and quality training provided. Don't be too busy for classes. You'll be sorry. Take a class and don't waste your money on this film which personally and globally negates what's needed for normal birthing in America.

Great preparation for childbirth

I got the VHS version of this course from the library for my first pregnancy and I found it great in all respects. Yes, the hairdos are outdated but the techniques are priceless. I took both the prenatal classes at the hospital and this video, but I would say that the advantage of the video is that you can review the material whenever you feel you need it, and for peace of mind in those weeks getting near the due date. Also, in terms of techniques this course offered MANY more options than the hospital course, and since you do not know which one is going to work for you... the more the better!

I am now on my second pregnancy and buying it once and for all!

This DVD was really helpful. 2007-10-10
My husband and I weren't able to attend formal lamaze classes due to work schedule. This dvd came in really handy! It prepared us for what to expect during delivery and showed great footage of actual vaginal and c-section deliveries. I used the breathing techniques when I delivered and found them very helpful. I would recommend this dvd to anyone who either doesn't have the time or resources to attend formal childbirth classes.

Great for first timers and as a refresher 2007-08-10
I am my daughters childbirth coach. While childbirth practices have changed and improved since I had my children the information has by and large stayed the same. This video was recommended to me by the lactation consultant at my daughter's chosen birthing center and also recommended at webmd.com. Amazon.com was the least expensive place to buy it.

My daughter could not get into the childbirth classes at her birthing center due to demand so we went the video route. She seemed to be more comfortable with the use of these videos in the comfort and privacy of home. My daughter's significant other, and my husband watched the video with us. It is my feeling that being the only coach is too demanding. Only because some women have 5 hour labor and some women have 3 days. As a team, we will all be able to be on the same page should we need another supporter. Our classes cannot accommodate multiple supporters.

There was one peculiar thing about the video. It seemed to be shot in the 80's. It did make for good entertainment value and lots of giggles. My daughter said, "Oh my gosh Mom, did you really dress like that in the 80's?" I did have to admit that big hair and button earrings were fashionable but never did I sport a mullet!!

Highly recommended for first-timers and as a refresher!

A great way to allow visual learners the opportunity to understand labor and delivery! However, the significant parts of the video move quickly while too much time is spent on breathing and relaxation (which are important, but in the video they are so important the teachers almost take too much time on this). The video is outdated; however, any traditional Lamaze books that are read in addition to watching this video basically give you the same information. There have been some changes (like the discussion of pain medication during labor and delivery) since the times of Dr. Lamaze; but the breathing techniques are either the same or improved to help the mother get through the process naturally.

Make sure you read books on this subject as well!
