Customer Reviews
As promised

These hooks worked great. They arrived quicky as promised. I used them to caulk my chimney and install a bathroom fan vent in a second floor dormer wall. You definetly need two hooks for safety, so don't be put off by American Manufacturing selling them by the pair. I checked around and did not find a better price for two. They, like all ladder hooks I saw, are made for a single D rung ladder. I used them on a folding 22' multi-position extension ladder. They still worked, but I felt I had to mount them on the ladder on the wrong side of the ladder and climb the back side to make sure they hooked over far enough. No big deal for safety, but the middle hinge on the ladder kept hitting the roof making rolling it up the roof more difficult. I might try the other way next time.
Rave reviews aside, these are not for everyone. Working on a 45 degree roof with a sawsall or even a caulk gun is not a comfortable job. I worked construction through college so I had experience roofing at heights and standing on third floor 2x6 exterior walls. It's no place for shakey legs. If you are shakey at heights (be honest, machismo can get you hurt or dead) these are not for you. Call a pro. You also need to be strong enough to push your chosen ladder with the hooks up your roof over your head while standing on another ladder. Ladder hooks are about 10 pounds and my ladder was 60. So, if you can't easily shoulder press 70 pounds using both hands while ballancing no handed on a ladder and contolling any side to side movement of your ladderhook ladder, these are not for you. Of course you could get a friend with ladder to help you so you can each push 1/2 the weight and keep one hand on the ladder you are standing on, but if you read past the shakey leg disclaimer you can probably do it by yourself. They are also not a substitute for brackets for reroofing your house, but they will allow you to do minor work without damaging your roof like brackets.
Did the Job, BUT.....

These were sturdy hooks and easy to use. They accomplished the job I bought them for. Unfortunately the T joints at the end of the hooks were painted shut upon delivery! This wouldn't have been a problem if they were in the proper position to make the ladder hook safe, but they needed to be rotated 90 into the T position. It took me an hour of prying, paint thinner, and WD-40 to free them.
Couldn't have done it without them

I had a steep dormer that had lost a dozen shingles- one of those jobs a pro just doesn't have the time to touch. When I say steep, I mean impossible to stand on, three stories up steep. First things first, you definetely need two ladder hooks, and I have no idea why you would only buy one. The reason for four stars instead of five is the lack of instruction, as they must think this is simple stupid, which the installation is, but using them is not. The wing nuts must be tightened as tight as you can get them, so the hooks do not move side to side. Also, be aware that the hooks are quite heavy and will make your ladder top heavy, which leads to my next issue. The wheels that help you roll the ladder over the roof also rotate 360 degrees, so if your top heavy ladder starts to go, forget trying to stop it. I had thought to try to tighten the bearing part of the wheels to make them stationary, but the job is done and I will do this next time I need the hooks. Overall I was pleased with the quality of the hooks, and they shipped in a timely fashion. Just wish I knew then what I know now.
Ladder Hooks provide safety, speed work!

I have used thes a number of times to repair eyebrow & gable windows, install turbine ventilators, etc. Used with a long extension ladder on a steep roof, they provide a "staircase" to safely speed movement up & down the roof, & they take less set-up time & do less damage than roof jacks. Depending on which side of the ladder I face them, & how far the ladder is extended, I often bungee cord a section of 2x4 to the ladder in order to keep the ladder from rocking or wanting to pop up.
Worked Great

I have a 12/12 pitch roof on a house that sits on top of a mountain. High winds can be a problem. Recently, I have had a few shingles blow off due to the high winds. The first time this happened, I paid someone $150.00 to replace the blown off shingles (about ten shingles and fifteen minutes worth of work). When 3 other shingles blew off recently, I decided I could not afford to pay someone each time this happened.
I ordered these ladder hooks, received them in about two days after ordering, and put them to use the next day. I must say these were easy to install on the ladder and worked great on the roof. I felt very comfortable working off the ladder. As some of the other posters said, these are no replacement for roof jacks and would not be good for shingling large areas of a roof since you have to work to the side of your ladder. However, if you only need to get on the roof for a few shingles or a specific spot to conduct a repair, these are great.
Overall I am very happy with this purchase and they more than paid for themselves with one repair.

I had been looking for a safe way to work on my steep roof. Reviewed several similar items and this appeared to be the most reliable. I found it very easy to adapt to my ladder on nthe roof with a feeling of confidence.
Great Set

These are great hooks. They are sold individually, but should be used in pairs. Not sure why they do it that way..

A must if you are working on a 12/12 pitch roof! Safe and effective design. Easy to install and remove from ladder. Fits a Warner ladder like a glove. No complaints here!
