he largest of the Mbiras (10"), the MB-05 quality is without compare. Traditionally, found throughout black Africa, this most popular of traditional African instruments extends south to South Africa, north to Ethiopia and Niger, east to Mozambique and west to The Gambia. The earliest written account of the instrument in 1586 claims the Mbira to have been invented and played in West Africa before 1000 B.C.E.Crafted from finely selected hardwood this 10" sound box resonates with a wide range of tones and pitches. The layout of the keys and their tunings allow the instrument to vibrate with the stroke of each key, producing a continuous drone-like buzzing. Simple to play, beautiful in tone, this MBIRA illustrates that this ancient instrument and Shona Mbira music in its beauty, subtlety, and virtuosity demands the same kind of respect that we might hold for any other classical instrument or music.Number of keys vary.

Awesome well-built authentic unique and musically inspiring tool

This Kalimba is very nice. The tone is wonderfully deep and lush rich sound due to the large sound box and the extra wide steel tines that are used. This instrument has a wonderful ancient tuning that is very unique and inspiring in itself. I am very pleased with this purchase. Its everything i had hoped it would be and much more. most of my Kalimbas are Hugh Tracey or handcrafted and one of a kind. This one fits right in and i will be using it profusely. If you are looking for something different, i highly recommend this item. It is well made and it IS one of a kind. The guy behind this beautiful creation is Joe Agu. I spoke with him and he is very cool and deeply committed to creating inspiring finely crafted pro quality instruments for players all over the world. He makes a LOT of other really fine percussion items that are also very desirable in my opinion. :) I will need to buy more from Joe for sure, and i highly recommend that anybody who wants the real deal to also buy Joe's Rhythm products.
