Served the purpose.

I bought this for an adult ESL student who has never been to formal school, is just beginning to learn English and needed a speaking electronic dictionary. It is much less expensive than the adult version available in the USA (although you can get cheaper ones in China, or possibly on the used goods market) and has a vocabulary of 44000 words. It worked well for her and satisfied her needs, and probably will for a while to come. For kids, it seems like a useful resource till their vocabulary demands a more advanced resource, but hopefully by then they would be reading, writing and speaking fluently enough. For a more advanced ESL learner though I would recommend the Franklin Collegiate Dictionary; its much more extensive.
My 7 years old loves it

We got it a couple of weeks ago. My son loves it. Whenever he read, he always have this dictionary next to him. He is learning to study independently, searching answers by himself.
for kids under 8 better

we can't find lots of new vocabularies from the dictionery although it's fun for kid to learn by speaking the word out. The only thing I liked it best is that it provides handwriting letters for kids to learn. I suggest that kids under 8 can buy it.
good tool

I bought this device because my daughter's school specializing in learning disabilities recommended it. It's deffinitely for the younger crowd since it doesn't have a lot of "big" words. It has a choppy computer voice-which is fine since my kids have not complained about it even though I don't care for it much. You can put any made up spelling word into it and it will give you choices of words to pick from that will be spoken to you. I found one word it didn't recognize- cake. It found "cakes", but not "cake" when I put it in as my son spelled it-kack. If your kid has spelling problems I highly recommend this product, especially if you are tired of spelling everything for them.
Tactile/kinesthetic

Ideal tool for the tactile/kinesthetic learner or the audio learner. Private word list helps learner concentrate on current week's spelling or reading words. Easy to use. Voice on machine is fine.

Talking Dictionary

The Franklin Children's Talking Dictionary is an excellent product. I have used it for years in my special education classroom with great success. This year I bought one for my grandson. It contains games for fun spelling practice. It also helps children pronounce unknown words by just entering the spelling and using the speak button. It's a great learning tool for both home and school.
Kid likes it and that's a good thing!

10 year old Kid uses the Franklin Talking Dictionary all the time. Got him more interested in spelling correctly. The fact that it talks back is more stimulating to him. It's easy to use; didn't have to show him how to use it. I recommend this dictionary to any parent looking to entice their child to spell correctly.
good product for the money

My elementary school daughter has a learning disability in reading and this helps her check spelling and definitions of words. I recommend this product. It's appropriate for school and home use. It works with her own earphones if she needs to use the audio function in a public place.
Pretty good overall

I bought this for my son who has mild dyslexia and has difficulty with many words. He has been allowed to use it in class in hopes his work will be easier to read!! Well, his class mates seem to really like it and some play the games on it. Most of them are asking him to borrow it to avoid having to walk over and get a dictionary! He is in fifth grade and it is working well for him right now, especially since his spelling is poor enough that he at times needs to use the speaking function to differentiate words. I do see that it will need to be replaced by an adult version in a few years. I looked up a word from one of my books and it was not in it's database. And sometimes, with his poor spelling, the phonics is stumped and can't decipher the word correctly. But overall it is holding up well, has a nice cover that has not yet broken, the speak function is helpful and the games are a hit. He says it has "tons" of words so it doesn't seem to be too young for his grade level. I would buy this product again I just wish I would have gotten it for him a year or 2 ago to get full use out of it.
