Blind Sawing!
2008-08-25
I had hoped that the Dremel Multisaw would be a good alternative to a standard jigsaw for cutting thin and small stock, but this tool did not work out for me.
The design of the Multisaw makes it impossible to see exactly where the blade is cutting. You must saw blind with only the faceplate score to guide the cut. In addition, the Dremel XPR with the saw attachment is tall and difficult to stabilize.
More useful than I expected

I was skeptical whether this would be any good but got it as part of the XPR kit and was pleasantly surprised that it actually works quite well. No, it is not a replacement for a full size jigsaw or reciprocating saw if you are doing large amounts of work, but it is quite handy for small jobs or small spaces.
I bought a second flex shaft so that I could attach the multisaw to the end of the shaft and fit it in even smaller spaces, I used gorilla tape to attach them since the shaft end is not threaded. It works great and makes the saw much easier to handle.
I also use the saw as a makeshift detail sander, I got a long carbide jigsaw blade for cutting glass (less flexible than standard blade) and dulled the blade teeth using the dremel with a diamond burr. Then I just wrap the blade with sandpaper and clamp it using small binder clips (or carpet tape if the spot is really tight). This has saved me from spending a fortune on the EZ lock finishing abrasive wheels which work well but wear out very quickly. I was on the verge of spending $400 on a Fein multimaster and while looking at its profile sanding attachment I got the idea to try this. Works better than any detail sander I have seen other than the multimaster which is amazing but way overpriced. I use the 3M sandblaster sandpaper which is backed with a rubber web, its expensive but lasts forever and the rubber backing keeps it from sliding off.
It works with the dremel 3956-02

I got this yesterday, and it can be plugged on the old dremel 3956-02, so I'm happy with the current results...
Suffers from design flaws

I got this tool as a part of kit. I was excited as I needed small jigsaw for hobby projects.
The tool is pretty sturdily built and fits into smaller corners than full size jigsaw. That is about the end of the positives.
First problem is that with the rotary tool the combo ends up being quite high tower and really needs too hands to control. With normal grip jigsaw you can easily use your other hand for to hold a board or whatever you are sawing - not so much with this one.
Second and bigger problem is that the blade is hidden quite "far" from the front edge of the guide. There is no way of steering the cuts with any kind of accuracy as you cannot see where the blade travels. This makes it totally impossible to use the jigsaw for any kind of accurate work.
In general I am not very impressed with many dremel accessories. They seem to be praised by people who don't have full sized power tools and are happy that they can do the random household hole or trimming here and there. However they do not provide either the sturdiness or productivity of a real tool (which would be unfair to expect) neither the accuracy and smartness you would expect from a small tool.
I ended cutting my plywood with a old school elbow powered jigsaw.
The rotary tools themselves are excellent just that the many of the attachments seem to exist just to add to the feature list.
Must - have attachment

This is the perfect attachment if, like me, your space is limited. Cuts as well as any saw I've used before

BUY A REAL SAW

THIS THING COULD BE FOUND IN A CRACKERJACK BOX. UNLESS YOU ARE CUTTING BALSA WOOD, BUY A REAL JIG SAW
Great product

Great saw for lots of jobs. Not all jobs, but anything you'd use a regular jig saw for.
This thing saved me some big money.

This attachment came with my 400 XPR. My first impression, when I saw it and put it on the XPR, was that this thing is going to be a pain to control.
But one incident completely changed my mind.
I have a house that was built in the 50's and the doors and the door knobs are all from the time that the house was built.
A few of the inside door knobs quit working properly so I went and got some new knobs.
The standard door knobs now have different depths and diameters than the originals on my doors.
I had my choice; buy all new doors and knobs or break out this Dremel MultiSaw attachment and go crazy.
Man does this thing work great!!!
It got around in those doors like a hot knife through melted butter.
It uses blades for most standard jigsaws, so I had other blades around.
This thing saved me the cost of buying all new doors for my house. I recut three dorr knob holes and the latch holes in a matter of 20 minutes and installed the new knobs in 10 more.
If you don't have this for your XPR, get it!!
Great product.

I was in the market for a miniature sawz-all, but when I saw that dremel offered this attachment I figured, "why buy a whole new tool if an attachment will do?" And I was right, this is a great product and it works very well with my XPR dremel tool. I have the XPR case and it stores neatly away with everything else.
The only reason I give this attachment 4 stars instead of 5 stars is that it comes with only one blade. Usually dremel packs back-ups with their products. I wonder why not here?
