Best printer ever

Does everything it advertises. Borderless printing and duplex printing are the s**t. The wireless printing is cool too but its up to you to decide if it's worth the extra $$$. As for me, I am totally satisfied.
Canon PIXMA iP4000R Wireless Photo Printer

After owning about a dozen printers I have found the best of the best. Ink is cheap and the printer is fast, quiet, and uses very little ink. The quality of this printer far exceeds all others I have owned. The wireless feature is the best as well as easy to setup once you get all the needed hardware. would recommend this printer to all of you that are tried of paying the high prices for the ink cartridges. good luck.
No Color at All

I give up. It prints black text great, but there is no color at all. I've been through every diagnostic, every setting, re-installed the driver, checked the ink cartridges several times. Forget it. Grrrrr.
A Great Problem Solver

I have had and liked a number of Canon printers. The combination of an I850 with the print server in the Apple Airport Express just did not work reliably. (But was better than the hassle of having to connect the laptop to print.) So when my son needed a printer, I looked around and decided to give him the I850 and buy the iP4000R.
I did the setup in the kitchen, which after reading the manual, was easier than I expected. (One suggestion, follow the steps to print the network info on the printer and note any changes or other items on the printout.)
After disconnecting the USB cable, I tried to print. At first disappointment, it was dog slow and stopped in the middle of the job. (I should note that the printer reported a marginal WiFi signal.) But after a few seconds it automatically restarted the print job. At least this let me know that there would no longer be lost print jobs.
Now that the printer is sitting where it belongs and has a nice strong signal, it is quick and has not missed a beat!
I also like the added features compared with the previous Canon's I had. The paper cassette allows the user to either expand the paper capacity or have different types available. I have #10 envelopes in the cassette, so when I print a letter I can just go ahead and print the envelope for it. Duplex printing is a nice bonus. I can save paper by printing on both sides and not have bleed through, though it does slow it down.
I'm glad that my son needed a printer!
Great printer, but here's something you should know
2005-10-02
I got the Pixma ip4000r so my wife could print from her wireless laptop from her home office while I could print via a USB cable from mine. This was replacing an Epson Stylus Color 600 printer which was sometimes upset when the A/B switch we were using was in the wrong position. The printing is great and fast, but there is one fact missing from the installation booklet I think you should know about. It says you should disable the MAC filters at your 192.168.1.1 wireless site and this is true, otherwise the printer will not communicate with your wireless laptop. If, after successful setup, you re-enable the MAC filters, the laptop will no longer communicate with the printer. What you have to do is enter the printer's MAC address under the "EDIT" portion of the MAC filter screen and "SAVE" at the bottom. Then when you enable the MAC filters the printer will be recognized. OR you could also leave the MAC filters disabled. The printer's MAC address is found in the "BJ Tool>View>Network properties". Look for the "BJ tool" in "Start>All Programs>Canon Pixma".
I hope this tip saves a lot of frustration and calls to Canon.
Great while it worked.

We had this printer for MAYBE two years when it just "stopped" working. It was a great printer while it lived. It did seem to got through a lot of ink, more than any other printer we've had. Anyway, as much as I loved the printer... there is no way I'd pay $325 for it (price when I posted this-4/12/08). I bought it for $209 in 2005. I don't think I'd spend $150 on it today. You could buy better pinters now for less.
Effortless

I finally upgraded from an ancient (but still working) CanonBJ, and I'm very happy with the results. Setup, including connecting through my wireless router, was a breeze; printing is speedy whether through my desktop or laptop; photo quality is great. Letter-size paper in the top feed and photos/envelopes in the tray offers good flexibility. I had trouble installing the Canon "Easy Web Print" on my laptop for some reason, but it isn't an essential feature. I haven't used the PictBridge feature with my camera yet, but it's nice to have the option avaiable.
Quiet, sharp print quality ...easy to setup

The unpackaging and ink cartridge instructions are concise and easy to follow. Pop the Pixmaip CD into your PC and follow the directions to install the printer on your wired or wireless LAN. You'll also automatically install the printer drivers, setup the printer device on your PC and load software useful for picture viewing and editing. Printer setup was a no-brainer and thus far the Pixma ip400R has been totally print reliable. This printer can be placed anywhere in the house and still receive print jobs by all household PCs! The "Out of the box" setup time until the first print copy was about 30 minutes.
Very Flexible Printer

I have a home network with both Windows XP and Mac OSX computers - 1 Windows desktop, 1 Windows laptop, 1 iBook. I struggled for a year trying to get my iBook to print on the printer attached to the desktop. I also tried several print servers, and never managed to get a good network printing solution.
Then, I happened upon the Canon iP4000R. I like Canon (have an i900D) for the cost of consumables (not cheap, but cheaper than Epson, HP) and photo print quality, so I decided to try the iP4000R.
It installed in minutes on my network. It works flawllessly with Windows and Macintosh computer via WiFi!. Its only plugged into a 120V socket, sitting out of the way, waiting for a print job.
It has 802.11g for speed and WPA for security - something I did not expect to find in this price range (I paid $160). I was also pleasantly surprised by the paper inpute cartridge under the printer which keeps the printer's profile low - no paper sticking out of the top like my i900D.
I think this printer is a bargain considering you are getting a very good quality printer, a print server, ethernet and WiFi adapter.
Wow! This printer is amazing!

This is one amazing printer. The print quality is outstanding. Photos look professional, they look exactly the same as photo-lab prints. Black text looks laser quality and the WiFi feature lets me print from anywhere in my house, from any one of my computers.
