Poor reliability, bad clock
2008-07-13
A clock radio needs to keep time. Mine gains time so needs to be reset frequently if I want the alarm to go off at the same time each day. Returned to factory, new clock, same result. Now the AM just died. Neither of these things should happen to a radio with this price tag on it.
Why Five-Stars?

Why do I give this radio 5-Stars? Because they wont let me give it 10.
The best money you will spend on a radio, period. Compare it side by side to the Bose radio and the Bose will beat it by a hiccup. That is only because the Bose has stereo output. On the other hand, this radio has a much better "footprint" and will fit on a nightstand or table much better. The reception is better than the Bose and with an auxillary input, it is easy to plug in your I-Pod or a portable CD player.
Highly, Highly recommend!
Put a cork in it

I agree that the reception is excellent, and that the bass is much too exaggerated. It helps to put a wine cork in the bass port. Not a perfect solution, but it helps.

EXCELLENT, UNRIVALLED, THE ULTIMATE

this is the finest home or office radio you will ever buy, forget the names like Bose and B&O and all the japanese products out there. Boston Acoustics is the King of all radio manufacturing,
they do not spend on marketing like the others. they just make the best product out there. Worth every penny and as you get used to the quality over time if you are an avid listener you will never get anything else because whatever else you buy will always be a dissapointment.
As an engineer i highly recommend it.
Fantasic Radio - from a fan of simplicity, honesty, and longevity

I received this clock radio for my birthday as a gift and was immediately impressed upon opening the box. It's hefty and very well made, but not too big that it didn't fit on my small nightstand. The LED read-out is fantastic, and wont keep you up at night.. it has a softer glow compared to cheaper Sony models. Overall the feel of this radio is perfect, the dials are exceptional, and the buttons are soft but firm. If you're a big fan of well-design and well-made products that will stand the test of time (and not end up at a thrift store after 2 years) then I would highly recommend investing in this piece. Enjoy!

The new Recepter Radio has tuner performance found only in the most advanced component receivers that cost many times its price. Its ability to pull in weak FM stations separates it from conventional radios, and its high selectivity allows it to separate closely spaced stations clearly. This highly praised table radio has a digital-tuner for AM/FM, a digital clock display, and allows 2 independent alarm settings. Thrill to the outstanding sound that has defined Boston Acoustics audio products with this amazing clock radio. Dual independent clock alarms can be set to music, buzzer, or both Battery backup stores presets and alarm settings during power outage Two-position brightness control to adjust for day or night 110-120 Volts.
flimsy controls diminish an otherwise competent radio

The volume and tuning knobs felt flimsy to me and sure enough the tuning knob has failed after 2 years of light use. I certainly can't recommend this radio.
Fits my needs perfectly

I was looking for a simple to use, reliable clock radio with good reception, and could not be more pleased with this one. It's not fancy, also my preference, and has all the features I need: compact size, alarm, preset station and sleep features, and lit digital readout.
Great sounding radio not a lot of features

I bought this radio as an upgrade over the old clock radio I've been using for many years. The sound is a huge improvement. It is just as good as the bose clock radio on my wifes side of the bed. Although the absence of a cd player is a negative, this radio does exactly what is advertised. This is a great radio for the nightstand or the kitchen counter.
An excellent clock radio

I live in a fringe reception area, about 50 miles from my preferred NPR station. My 20-year-old clock radio, which did a respectable job of picking up that station recently died. I initially replaced it with an RCA RP5430, after reading a number of reviews indicating it had good reception. Unfortunately, I did not find this to be the case. It could not pick up that NPR station at all and I sent it right back. The Boston Acoustics Receptor performs far better. The reception is outstanding and I can pick up that station with no problem. As others have noted, the audio quality is also superb; I do not find the amount of bass a problem at all.
I just have a few minor complaints. First, the display is small, as others have noted, and I have a lot trouble reading it from less than two feet away without grabbing my glasses or squinting severely. Also, the time must be set manually. Not a big deal, but when so many far less expensive competitors do this automatically, it makes this product appear a bit dated. Finally, the battery backup isn't quite right. The specs published by Amazon are not correct--they say that it uses AAA batteries. In fact, they have been replaced by an internal, hopefully permanent battery (which is not mentioned at all in the manual). I did a quick 15-minute test, and the radio maintained its time, preset, and alarm time settings. However, it did NOT retain the alarm activation state. Even though the two alarms were both activated when I unplugged, they were switched off when I plugged the radio back in. Since the radio retains all of its other settings, I have to believe this is a design oversight, and a rather significant one. If not for this issue, I would have rated the product 5 stars.
