Sonnet Allegro USB2 Adaptor
2008-11-10
Online ordered this PCI-card adaptor to add four USB2 ports to an old Dell Dimension c700 desktop running XP. Desktop only had original USB1x. Card dropped right in to a spare PCI slot, was found by XP, and worked right away. Remember, be sure the card is seated all the way into the slot, which can require the application of a grunting level of pressure until the pins seat. You'll feel it and see it when they go in all the way.
Later, used a port on this card for a Linksys USB2 wireless adaptor that also worked fine first time. Worked fine too with a Sony USB digital still camera, and the wireless and the camera seemed to play nice together. Next up, a USB2 hard drive to supplement the overwhelmed 20GB original equipment.
Great card

Great pci card. Installed without any problems. XP recognized it and set it up right away. No problems.
USB 2 card works well

Works as advertised. Card shape is different than in the photo, but functions are the same.
Helpful update to my old (2001) Mac computer.
Deep Sleep compatibility
2008-02-26
One issue that has plagued add-in USB cards for the Macintosh for years is problems with power saving. Either the computer will not sleep, will crash on waking or sleeping, or it will lose contact with the card and attached devices. This card, when used with Mac OS 10.5.2 specifically, seems to eliminate these problems. According to email from Sonnet support, this was fixed in the 10.5 beta, broken in 10.5 and 10.5.1, and now works properly. My G5 will enter deep sleep, and wake correctly, even with a USB floppy drive connected and a disk in the drive. Will other cards now work properly? Maybe, but so far only Sonnet has actually said so in writing. I'm very happy!
Simple to install, works perfectly

I ordered this to add USB2 to my Mac G4 MDD. As advertised, I opened the side door of the Mac, installed the card, turned on the Mac, and it worked perfectly from the very start. Now I can enjoy my new iPod which requires USB2 to synch. Good product at a good price.
Works like a champ for Mac!

USB connections are everywhere - chances are if you purchase a device that plugs into a computer, it uses a USB connector. Not all USB peripherals perform the same - many of the latest operate at high-speed and push data up to 40 times faster than standard USB. But you'll need a new connection to get maximum performance - the USB 1.1 connections on your computer won't do. Add the low cost Sonnet Allegro USB 2.0 PCI adapter card to your computer (install it in any available PCI slot) and bring it up to speed with the latest USB technology, "simply fast"!
Good Quality, Poor Installation Instructions.

Having never been well versed in the PCI Slot area, I assumed the number of pins would match the slots, which it didn't and the instructions were nearly non-existent on the installation. However, once installed it work as advertised, and I was well pleased.
No problem

Put in my G4 dual processor. No problem at all. Once it boots up, the OS recognizes it right away.
Works, but won't wake from sleep w/ Mass Storage Devices attached...

Unfortunately Mass Storage Devices are what I got it for...Otherwise, it is plug and play.
Sonnet says this is a long-standing bug in OS X's USB 2.0 drivers. From what I can determine, it is Apple's fault, since I haven't found anyone reporting a USB 2.0 board that doesn't have this problem under OS X.
I am running OS X 10.4.11 on a Dual 800 G4 Quicksilver machine (which is not supported by Leopard, but from what I hear it is still a problem in 10.5.x)
Oh, thank goodness!

Anyone else out there with a G5 tower that has all but given up finding useful expansion cards to fit your PCI-X slots?
I've been looking for something that would work in my Dual 1.8 G5 tower for a long time. Several months ago I stumbled across Sonnet's website. I bookmarked it and forgot it.
There's really a limit to how useful daisy-chaining USB hubs is, and I passed that threshold ages ago. I finally started looking again, and before long I finally found my own bookmark.
Well, I got it. I bought mine from Amazon, which actually shows an older model in their picture but they ship the current one. It was actually 2 bucks cheaper than Sonnet's page and the shipping was free.
It arrived yesterday while I was at work - way before I expected it, and I just put it in.
- Power down.
- Plug the card into slot 2.
- Power up.
It works!
Incidentally - the other reviewers who mention that Amazon's picture is from an older, huger model are spot on. This is much slimmer and trimmer than the one pictured.
