Careful of the roller assembly 2007-04-05
I have used an earlier design of the Paint 'N' Roll for years and liked it. I wore it out so I bought a PaintMate to replace it. Big mistake. As far use and cleaning goes, it is virtually identical to the Paint 'N' Roll except the roller assembly was redesigned to snap together instead of screw together like the previous design. During use, the roll tends to come apart, drenching the floor, the painter and everything else.

I've looked at all the newest Wagner painting products and they all use this same design. It made such a mess that I fixed the crack in my old Paint 'N' Roll and am back to using it.

I wouldn't buy it again. I like the trigger feed so I'm going to adapt it to my old one.

Does the Job you need it too! 2006-10-24
This is a 30 dollar product. It is not a 650 dollar professional painter kit. It works wonderfully if you are trying to paint large rooms, or multiple rooms. It is not ment to paint small bathrooms or little jobs. Keeping that in mind with the price it is a wondefull product that saves time. I used it on my house, went thru 4 rooms and put down a primer useing it (saved me half the time). Yes clean up sucks and it takes a while, but so does cleaning up a bunch or rollers in the sink and roll pans. 30 mins to clean up is nothing if you figure it can take 3 hours to paint one room (depending on ceiling height and size)and 12 hours to do 4 rooms. With this I got it done in a litte under 7 Hr. (with clean up). So where as someone else might have had a shorter clean up time than me, I have already finished the next project.

Terrible! Not worth 1 penny! 2006-10-11
This thing is terrible. Once the tube is filled the handle is heavier than the roller so its very difficult to push along the walls. You can't get the same angles that you can with a standard roller. And clean up - what a MESS! It took me over 20 minutes to clean this thing up. The directions said to flush with water about 5 times - it took about 20 times to get the tube clean. This thing is going right back to Lowes - its not worth the time nor the money.

Sounds great . . . but you can't hide a lemon 2006-06-01
I bought the Paintmate Plus at Lowe's a couple of days ago, after borrowing it's lower tier sibling, the Wagner Paint 'N Roll. The two are the same, except that the Paintmate Plus is $10 more and has a trigger rather than just a plunger. I followed all of the directions to use this thing, but there were two huge problems and one major annoyance.

Problem #1: The black plastic retainer on the roller arm that holds the roller to the Paintmate body is flimsy, and it eventually fatigued and snapped. This was after two days of steady painting on painted drywall . . . i.e., no harsh use. This is unacceptable.

Problem #2: To fill the Paintmate Plus, you insert the device into a spiggot that sits on a lid in a 1 gallon paint can. Simple enough; the device effectively acts like a rubber check valve that is supposed to allow paint to flow in when inserted and pulling out the plunger, or to be injected back into the can of paint by pushing in the plunger. The problem is that after two days of use, this little rubber valve either easily deformed or showed its useful life and began leaking paint right out of it. This made a major mess and paint spots all over my tarp and even onto my carpet. This was also unacceptable.

Major Annoyance: This device takes about 20-25 minutes to clean, and you never feel like you finish cleaning it. It leaves a royal mess, and it's just awkward enough not to fit into a sink or other standard basin.

The concept of the Wagner Paintmate Plus is good, but the performance in terms of spreading interior latex satin paint is mediocre at best, and regarding time savings . . . after taking this piece of junk back to Lowe's and buying a standard extending roller, I have doubled my pace. Buy, buy Wagner.

Quick & easy painting 2006-05-30
I suggested this product to my husband to help him in painting our master bath and it worked great. It is much better than having to go back to the paint tray to load the roller every time. This worked fast and cleanly (no splatters).

It is not for use with primer, it's for latex or oil based paints.

"Priming the roller is important, do not oversaturate the roller, for best results, maintain a steady flow of paint to the roller cover."

for the price... not to bad 2008-06-18
filling the roller was kind of a pain if you don't do it right you'll be standing over the paint can for half an hour. however, once you get the hang of it it works great... didn't end up with paint all over myself... and nothing fell off or broke while i painted... hard to get into smaller spaces the roller and tube is just to long... but what do you expect. if you prime the roller correctly you have a very even coat... painted my daughters room in half the time it took us to do it before so all and all i'm pleased...

clean up wasn't that bad... took me about 10-15 minutes and that's cleaning the roller itself too... took my husband about 30 minutes.... so maybe it's just a man thing.

Wish I'd found this years ago! 2008-05-02
I don't understand the poor reviews...I LOVE this roller!! I paint in less than half the time as usual. I just finished painting the interior of an 1800 square foot house, and I'm sold on this product. Clean-up was easy, too. No tray to worry about...just follow the directions. At first clean up might take a little longer, but once you use it a couple times and don't have to refer to the directions, it's a snap.

Made quick work of an entire room. Better than expected! 2008-04-05
I found this on sale in a retail store.

I had a major paint job to do, so I decided to give it a try.

I was painting an interior house room, with latex paint.

The item sucked up the paint into it's reservior without any problem.

The trigger handle feed paint smoothly.

No leaking of paint was experienced at any part of the unit during the painting job.

The paint fed well out of the roller without any problem.

Coverage was uniform.

Cleanup was fairly quick with the unit itself.

The head/roller took a bit longer to get totally cleaned.
(I wanted to make sure it was totally clean, as I needed the unit for a future painting job and went with a "better-safe-than-sorry" approach.
I did not know availability of the roller head as a separate item, nor what the pricing on it may be; so I rinsed the head several times).

In my case, I had a good experience with the item.

In any painting job, there are so many different
applications, variations, indoor vs outdoor, rough surface vs smooth, and other variables involved.
That could be why some users had problems, vs my experience of no real problems (other than the head requiring several rinsings).

I have to give it a thumbs up!

For the price and ease of use, I have done better with this item than with some lower end electric and/or battery powered spray painting units.

The paint shield did a good job. In my case it fared well.

Pleasantly Suprised - Great 2007-11-11
I hadn't used mine yet and when i read some reviews here I thought "great this thing does not work"

So its sunday...i wasted Saturday with a leaky faucet...and i want to watch football...I get up early..cutin the corners, floorboards and ceiling with a brush...wash up.. get the instructions and set up the paint master...so far so good..start painting..looks spotty..i think...great this is what they are talking about..then the roller gets saturated...and wahla..i finish the whole room)maybe 14 x 14 in about an hour...best painting experience of my life...no ladder...just refill the tube a few times...no leaks at all..and the long handle lets u reach everywhere.

Clean up not that bad...i just climbed in the big tub and took a batch with it..i cleaned it REALLY good cause i want it to last..coat all the rubber valves with vasoline...man...its 11 and i am watching football.

5 stars..do not hesitate on this thing. A great buy and invention.

A vote for the Paint Mate Roller 2007-07-02
This handy tool does take 20 minutes to clean, but it saves me countless hours of painting. Due to its size, it can't be used in tight quarters, but the length of the device extends the overall height to which I can paint, reducing my time on the ladder. My time is valuable. My safety is critical. I recommend using a tarp and reading the instructions carefully. I would pay twice the price for this tool to save the kind of time and effort I needed to complete the stairwell I just finished.
