Great while it lasts . . . 2008-08-30
We had our MP780 for about year, and it worked pretty well apart from being a bit of an ink-hog. But the real problem is that it recently just stopped working -- it no longer powers up. It is dark and silent.

I checked around and found this is not an uncommon problem with the Pixma series printers. After doing some research I found that all I have to do is take a day off from work, drive 2 hours to a repair shop open only M-F, and pay more for the repair than the printer costs in the first place. Brilliant.

Looks like I'm going back to HP for my next printer.

all that you need 2008-07-02
bought this a couple years ago and have had absolutely no issues with it (famous last words). the only negative is the size - it is quite large, otherwise it would be 5 stars.

Great, but not perfect 2008-05-25
I have had this printer for over a year and half, my only regret was that the version with a duplex scanner came out shortly after I purchased my printer. It does its job well, and is an excellent full featured - mid-range multifunction printer.

Pros:
- 2 paper trays for keeping of 1 specialty paper and plain paper in printer at all times
- Extra large black ink cartridge, and availability of off brand ink for just a few dollars a cartridge
- Full duplex printing saves paper
- ADF for scanning or copying multiple page documents
- Replaceable print head means if head breaks, you only need to buy a $50 part, not a whole new printer.
- Lots of easy access points to clear (infrequent) paper jams.
- Good (though not perfect) print quality when using off-brand inks (HP and Epson with name-brand inks look sharper, but I pay $2-3 per cartridge instead of $20-30, and thus willingly put up with the minor imperfections)
- Completely compatible with both Mac and PC, Including sharing to either platform off a network adapter (purchased separately) or as a shared printer plugged into a Mac or PC

Cons:
- No duplex scanner (next model up has one)
- No color LCD for direct photo print (never used this feature, but someone else might care)
- Duplex printing is quite slow, as it must wait for ink to dry, making it a useless feature when in a hurry.
- USB 1.1 rather than 2.0

I have used this printer consistently for close to 2 years, printing 100-500 pages a month, including some stints of 200+ pages in a single day, and the printer continues to do its job well. This printer will stand the test of time, and provides a lot of features for its relatively small price tag.

I use this printer regularly and have had no problems. It is a very good model, prints great pictures and is easy to operate.

MP780 is a superior multifunction at a good price 2007-09-01
I purchased the MP780 in July 2005 when I bought a new computer system. I loved it from day one. We had used HP multifunctions prior to this based on commercial ratings of the consumer products and at my husband's insistence. We experienced increasing problems and increasingly soon after purchase as well as a short life span in general on their products. The last one was the straw: it did not work correctly out of the box and we'd purchased an extended warranty. HP replaced not with a new unit but with a refurbished product which failed within a month. When I had to replace my system, I went with Canon thankfully.
The unit is smaller, operates wonderfully quietly on the quiet setting, has no issues with fax operation - and indeed you CAN use it with a telephone - we do, but we choose to use a distinctive ring rather than the auto-switch option. Our business phone is a cordless one as well and there are no issues with either Uniden or V-Tech higher end expandable cordless answering systems as we've used both.
My photos of wedding, children and grandchildren are all exceptional.
I scan tons of things in with no issues. I don't need to adjust my scanned items as they are placed straight on the scan bed or fed from the document feeder. I don't have the problem of pushing buttons when I scan from a book as mentioned by another reviewer. And I didn't understand the issue very well as every multifunction I looked at had the control panel in the same place.
It is easy to operate, reliable and Easy Webprint is fabulous.
There was no downside to this multifunction unit. I say WAS, because we took a direct lightning strike in July which took out a panel mount surge suppressor and the APC HUGE battery back/surge protector I use for my system. My unit was still under warranty and Canon replaced it with no issue whatsoever. I was very concerned about a refurbished replacement because of my past experience with HP and due to the fact that we travel for work a great deal so my unit was in mint condition (I feared getting another obviously worn replacement). Canon sent an MP830 (later model) which is perfect and unblemished in any way - I was embarrassed at how much I'd fussed at them about the program of replacing new with refurbished and the fact that I'd made it plain I would NEVER be satisfied with the exchange (I wanted my 780 repaired). I never expected or felt the later model was necessary.

The MP830 is also a great printer - also easy to operate, scans, prints, faxes with just as good quality and just as few problems, but I miss Easy Webprint more than I would have thought. Even if you don't want this model, seriously consider Canon; I'm sold on their products, their support and their warranty service. I just don't believe you'll be disappointed.

PRINT HEAD SUCKS 2007-08-29
DOES ALL IT'S SUPPOSE TO DO. HOWEVER 3 PRINT HEADS IN 2 YEARS. I DON'T THINK SO. TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE.

Best printer we've every had! 2007-07-21
Never had a problem in almost 2 years. Other printers jam. Not this one.

Decent Printer but problems after a year 2007-06-30
I bought this printer in March 2006, just over a year ago. All was working fine, and then I got a scanner error problem. Beware of this printer. Read reviews outside of Amazon and do a search on "mp780" and search for "scanner error" you will see as equal number of people unhappy with this printer as happy with it. The only thing that works on my printer right now seems to be the printer itself. I cannot scan or copy pages. Although I have not tested the fax machine.

Update: April 2008, if I had the capability to re-rate this item, I'd rate it as one star. I emailed customer support who gave me instructions on clearing the scanner error - of course it didn't work. They said that I had 2 options if it didn't clear the scanner error, #1 - go to a specific location and get it fixed since its a hardware problem, #2 - they would give me a discount with their loyalty program if I decided to buy another Canon printer. I decided instead to buy an HP C7280. I bought the HP for $179.00 at Best Buy. See my reviews on the HP AIO printer in the future. I plan on continually updating my review on the HP, so that people can see how it holds up relative to time and use.
