Easy to use--no instructions needed!

Heard about this product, so for 15 bucks thought I'd try it. It hasn't failed me yet on a wall. The magnet's in this thing easily find the studs, as long as they have standard nail spacing in them! I've been able to find a stud on every wall I have, and it stays locked in place, so I haven't had to mark up the walls. The only drawback at my place is I guess my ceilings are too think for it to find any joists/studs in them--was trying to locate a ceiling hook in a joist, but couldn't using this. But for walls, it's great!

I agree with all the high praise for this low tech simple and highly effective approach to the age old stud finding task.
I don't know what took me so long it find this. Oh, I know. I didn't know 'this' kind of powerful finding magnet existed. I was use to being frustrated by the always questionable(is it a stud or isn't it) and unreliable high tech electronic ones, and at the other end, the low tech low power 'floating magnet pointer' kind.
Let me tell you the advantages from much OTJ experience. First, unlike the low power pointer kind, this one is much larger and there you can scan/cover an area much faster. Second, once you have located a stud nail its powerful magnet sticks to the nail providing an absolute positive ID, unlike an electronic one, and because it stays on the wall, it provides its own 'marker' until you are ready to attach your thingy. No marking on your wall.
Now, keep in mind once you have located a nail, if it is not where you want to attach something in the horizontal direction, measure in multiples of 16" increments in either direction to find other studs along your wall. Then move the magnet, to that location to scan again to verify the closest stud to your desired location. Also, once you have located your horizontal location, be sure your vertical location point selected to drive a larger nail or screw is really a full length stud locating a nail above and below your vertical point using this magnet.
Bottom line: Its simple, can't break, compact in your tool drawer, no marks(sticks to nail for reference point and is vinyl coated to protect wall while sliding/scanning), and can sub as a frig magnet. :)
Best stud finder ever 2008-02-28
I have an old house built in the early 1900's and it has the old lathe and horsehair plaster. I've tried all the electronic stud finders and all of them proved to be useless in my case. This one finds the stud every time because of the strenth of the magnet. because of the thickness of my plaster I have to hold it very loosly and it does not hang on the wall like it does when you use it on dry wall but you can feel it pull to the nail in the stud holding the lathe to the stud easily so you know that you are pretty close to the center of the stud and it never misses. If you use it on a wall with wallboard it will pull it right out of your hand. It is incredible. This stud finder does one job and it does it incredibly well. Anyone hanging cabinets or shelves has to have this. Forget the electronic ones that sense density and go with this. You won't be dissapointed.

I've been putting up shelves and things for YEARS and have ALWAYS been disappointed by supposed 'stud-finders'. The electronic ones were horribly inaccurate and often gave false readings. The cheap magnetic ones were worthless. STUD-4-SURE, though, has worked EVERY SINGLE TIME. I kid you not, it's made putting up shelves and brackets a very approachable task. Stud-finding was always the uncertain headache involved, and now it's a pleasure to see this powerful magnet find those studs. Tip: If you can't find your stud by sweeping your wall with this device, scan the floorboards at the base of the wall - they are normally nailed into studs.
So yes, save hours of your life, and consider this a long-term investment: it's the last stud-finder you'll ever need to buy.

I own a number of different stud finding devices and each one was a disappointment. If I am going to put a hole in a wall then I want to be confident that I will hit the mark every time. This product was exactly what I was looking for!

I love this device's simplicity of design and use. It is an elegant solution to a difficult problem.
I have lath and plaster walls in my home. Evidently the plaster is thick, the tacks are small, or the magnets are not quite powerful enough; in any case I have trouble detecting the studs beneath. It takes a light hand and sensitivity to the magnets' pull. Once I think I have a stud I can move straight up and down to find the adjoining tacks, but it is still a fairly loose and imprecise process - especially if I have to nail a stud dead-on. I can get a pretty clear idea where the studs are, but the stud finder will not stick to any of the tacks in my walls.
This is a simple and reliable product. I am satisfied with my purchase, but be aware it is not exactly a silver bullet in all cases.
It actually works 2008-06-04
After almost buying a $50 electronic version that needed batteries, I found this review and liked the low tech concept combined with high ratings. It works great and as another reviewer said, it hangs on the wall once the stud is found making placement of your hole easier. My husband, who thinks all objects weighing over 2 ounces must be hung into a stud, is thrilled. Probably any powerful magnet would work the same, but this is a nice size, with a flat side that doesn't damage walls, bright color, and decent container.

Works for me! Small, easy to use and effective. This is my first stud finder and thanks to all the 5-star reviews other customers posted, I didn't waste money purchasing other brands. Thanks for the info!
