Rubber band fixes tinny sound
2008-04-10
I have read that Macally updated this product many months ago (and regrettably didn't change the model number). The newer version has more volume, better battery life, and better sound. Many of the more critical reviews may be from people who bought the first version. My unit has met or exceeded my expectations in every category - when operated with a rubber band on it. (Some of the reviewers may also not have considered that they must turn up the ipod volume.)
Initially the door over the battery compartment was difficult to open. After many operations it is now easy to open, but the result is that the door vibrates giving the unit a tinny sound. I solved this problem by putting a rubber band around the cylinder. (Now I use an appropriately sized O ring.) This stops the vibration and the sound is remarkable for such small speakers. It's certainly not in a class with larger speakers, but is terrific for uses requiring small, portable, battery operated speakers.
I bought the podwave to listen to music on long bike rides. It works great for this. I suspend the unit from the back of my bike helmet and use a headphone extender cable to reach the ipod in my jersey pocket. I can hear the music when the road is empty but can always hear the traffic approach. This is much better than any headphone or earbud solution.
Now that I have the podwave, I find that there are times I prefer it to listening with earbuds. It's easier on the ears.
One last thing is that the podwave works fine with a rechargeable NIMH battery.
Do not buy!!!!

It does not work! I was so excited to see it and loved how small it is. But I cannot hear it unless the room is silent. It goes through batteries quickly and just really is useless. Too bad I did not read the reviews before I made the purchase.
For what it IS (tiny and portable), an EXCELLENT product!

Here's the real deal. This Macally Podwave portable speaker system has not been given a 'fair shake' at all by many reviewers here, given their much too high and unrealistic expectations. Of course you won't get full range sound and dynamics out of such tiny portable speakers. They aren't intended for this! These are highly portable, compact stereo speakers designed for NEARFIELD listening (close to your body or face), to be worn around your neck or placed directly in front of you for best sound. I needed a compact, lightweight pair of speakers connected to my MP3 player, I could wear around my neck (my MP3 player is tiny, and much smaller than an iPOD). For safety reasons, I like listening to music this way when walking the dog at night or riding my bicycle so I can better hear sounds around me. Regarding the sound itself, it is very good IF the speaker is NEAR you as mentioned above. Mids and highs are there, in surprising detail for a speaker this size. Deep bass is lacking, of course, but the drums and bass lines are there and quite audible, just without the kick and vibration you would hear on larger drivers (speakers). The sound is pleasing overall. Keep in mind that you must use the volume control on your MP3 player to drive these speakers, and that the higher the recorded bitrate of your music (192 kbps or better is ideal for better frequency response and dynamic range), the better the sound coming out of these little wonders. 'Garbage in, garbage out', as the saying goes. I have also read some of the reviews here mentioning that the more current units have better sounding speakers than older units. Perhaps they changed the design for the better? In any case, this unit fits it's 'design niche' perfectly, and works quite well for what it was intended for.

Not loud enough. Battery doesn't last long enough. Maybe they will improve but right now don't buy.
Speakers blow out easily

DO NOT USE THESE IF YOU PLAN TO BLAST MUSIC! THEY WILL BLOW OUT WITHIN A DAY! AND THE SOUND QUALITY IS HORRIBLE!
Don't waste your time

Macally PODWAVE Portable iPod Stereo Speakers - The PODWAVE is an ultra-portable, battery operated mini stereo system for your iPod, iPod Mini, or any portable audio device with a 3.5mm headphone jack. Just plug it in, and you now have two speakers with which to enjoy your music. Unit Weight - 2.8 oz.
Don't waste your time with this trash.

I bought this in hopeing that it would be a good emergency speaker for my IPOD Video but it simply sucks. The sound is set at a single level (below conversational sound) so you can only hear it in a quiet place. It falls out and swivels from your IPOD as it doesn't fit well. This device is a serious waste of your money when there are so many other speakers to buy that work better.
Pricey product for the performance it delivers.

It's a good idea but it has some flaws:
1.- Even when it works on any iPod, it was designed for the early models with the headphone connector in the middle.
2.- Sound is very low.
It's well made but needs to be improved and a new model for the newer iPods is also needed unless you don't care the speakers turns around freely and a third of this thing it's off your Pod side.
Waste of Money

Please dont waste your money on this thing, the sound is very faint even when turned up to the max and you'll go through alot of batteries just to use it.
Poor Volume
2007-04-26
This product is a disappointment. The volume coming out of the speakers, even with the iPod volume set at maximum, was barely audible. This product would be great if one could hear it.
