Lost my 1st...Not sure how! They just keep getting better and better in my opinion. If you like this one you HAVE to get Viva La Vida!

6/21/08 Before you read this review check out Coldplay's latest CD "Viva la Vida". It is light years ahead of this CD "X&Y".
I guess I am so addicted to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and other great bands of the 70s-80s that Coldplay falls flat on it's face for me. Or, my expectations of "almost uniformly" stellar British rock bands is unrealistic.
As most people do when listening to music, one finds that you do compare the new with the old. And so, in fairness to the change in technology and my own personal taste, I compared this band to my current favorite in world rock music, the astonishing rock-your-rear-off Afro Celt Sound System Band whose singer Iarla O'Liondird's vocal range is so utterly astounding. (Even Josh Groban plays AFCSS at his live concerts).
After listening four times to this CD "X&Y", I still found Chris Martin's nasal, and at times, irritatingly whiney voice boring and monotonously repetitive. He is up and down his vocal range over and over on nearly every song. About midway through the CD it felt like I was listening to the same song over and over with musical variations. For me the song lyrics were mostly juvenile and often trite. Especially on the song "X&Y". HOWEVER, Their band members' musicality and instrument talent is undeniable. For this reason I can say I somewhat enjoyed the CD. Overall, if I have to pick a listen to again, maybe, these songs merit a redux: "White Shadows"; "A Message"; "Low".

This is one of the best album of all times. Every song is amazing. No fillers here.

I think this is an all-around great album. There is something about "Fix You" that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Of course, there is also "Speed of Sound" and "The Hardest Part," which seemed to be the biggest tracks off this album. The bonus track, "'Til Kingdom Come" isn't too shabby either.
Anyway, being one with a discerning ear and a home theater setup that can expose flaws in recordings, I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge that this album is a victim of the loudness war and contains almost no dynamic range. There are long passages of songs that border on clipping and are just plain LOUD. Of course, I've come to expect this from all new recordings, so I won't dock the album that much.
I want my Coldplay back.

COldplay X & Y

I dont think I really need to write a review, everyone should already own this album. If you haven't, just take care of that.
If you're only a radio listener, you're missing 90% of ColdPlay

I've been an avid listener of Coldplay for almost a decade now, and was very excited about the release of this album. It was, however, not what I expected, but quickly became my favorite. The album mixes rock and melody between and within songs, without losing the momentum that they are known for. If you are a fan, this album is a must, and if you haven't gotten into them yet, this album is a great place to start.
Coldplay- anthemic stadium band..... whether you like it or not

Not to compare X and Y to other albums, but Parachutes was perfect. A Rush of Blood to the Head while not perfect was still a 5 star album. They were both well thought out and well played and only one song (Amsterdam) was a filler. The important thing to remember here though is that both albums are in the in the right order and all the songs compliment one another. With that said this is where x and y fails. I cant listen to ALL the songs in one sitting. I always skip the title track XandY, what if, and sometimes twisted logic.
With that said I would like to point out some great things about the and some fixes that could have easily made X and Y a 5 star album. All of the songs except what if, XandY, and twisted logic are 5 star songs. If those songs were eliminated and the song Til Kingdom come was given album track status instead of being left as a bonus track this would have easily been a 5 star album. With these 3 songs however X & Y drags on far too long. I love x and y and wish that coldplay would have better sense when they were editing. Standout tracks for me are White shadows, swallowed in the sea, and speed of sound
I dont think fans should bash Coldplay for their new direction musically on this album (Square one, White Shadows, and Low). No one can expect the acoustically inclined Parachutes to be repeated again. There are some really good songs here, most of which are an experimental direction for the band. They are a stadium band whether fans like to admit it or not and this album has proven that Coldplay is worthy of that status.

I promised myself that I would share my CD player with the other 1200 or so CDs I own, but this one keeps finding its way back into my car. Every single cut is singable and uplifting. It's definitely on my top ten list. Simply a great accomplishment. My only concern is that I don't hold the same expectations for the next CD.....out in a month from today....Oh, man!
