Not impressed - our 4th saber
2008-01-05
This is our fourth light saber and out of the box I am not very impressed with it. Our 6 year old (the real recipient) is happier with it than I am.
The changing light from red to blue looks good in a dark room but it is unreadable in daylight.
The blade was so tight that I had to really shove it in and out. The sounds are good but intermittent. We had to whack the saber pretty hard to get battle sounds and then today when we whacked it a little harder the battle sounds stopped working altogether. After a rebuild, loosening all the screws in the saber, twisting it, rotating (but not changing) the batteries and writing this review the sounds came back.
Apparently we got a bum unit but my son has had a lot more mileage and a lot more fun with the nearly unbreakable non electronic model: Star Wars E3 BASIC LIGHTSABER BL01 RED. He makes plenty of noise in his imagination (and his mouth!) and the color is vibrant in the daytime. He is so into Star Wars that I would get him an FX Luke Skywalker Force FX Lightsaber for about $100 before I spent another $30 on another toy like this one.
Kids love it

I bought 2 of these for my 5yo and 3yo. They are getting into star wars and they really like playing with these. SO far they have had a lot of fun. The toy seems pretty durable so far. All in all it was worth the buy.
Great fun for any age

This is a great toy for any age (especially on Halloween, when anyone can
dress up !). The buzz and clashing sounds are realistic enough, and the ability to switch between the blue (Jedi) and red (Sith) colors greatly increases its value over the other lightsabers. Really for the price there are no complaints !
A 30-year-old kid's review

I was born the year the original Star Wars came out. So it's been in my psyche for a long time. I remember when they first started making these extending lightsabers, and when kids would put coloured cones on top of flashlights to compensate for their lack of a lightsaber.
Anyway, here I am, 30 years later, and I still love Star Wars (my wife humours me). I bought an older Luke Skywalker lightsaber from "Return of the Jedi" for my son, who is now 8. He's seen all the movies except Ep. III (he'll have to wait a while for that). I bought the colour-changing saber for me, so that we could duel together. We do, and it's always fun.
I like the sounds of this saber. For a $20 toy, it's not bad. Not Master Replicas quality, but I couldn't afford that. Still, the sounds are good. The lights are bright, thanks to LEDs. Not so much during the day, but at night and in a darkened room, they're great.
The only thing I didn't like is that the body of the saber (the grip, I suppose) is so massive. Length-wise it's fine, but it seems really thick. I know they've got those electronics inside, but if they can make it work with the thinner and more accurately detailed vibrating Ep. III sabers, I don't see why they couldn't make it work with these as well.
Still, if you can get one, go for it. Then you can battle Jedi vs Jedi, or Jedi vs Sith. It's a good time, whether you're 8 or 30.
kids love it!

Got this for our 4 yr old, but two days after we got it, I had to order another one for my 2 1/2 year old girl too. They love to play with them, night and day the ability for it to change colors is great. Then when we adults play fight with them, it is very good exercise and improves coordination skills.
Cool sounds and lights

Lightsaber is a Hit

Santa brought this lightsaber for my Star Wars crazy-watching kid. He LOVES it. I was thrilled to find it was very well made and not a flimsy piece of *^&^% as I had expected.
The light-changing color from blue to red is very cool and they show up really well in a darkened room. The blue shows up well no matter the lighting conditions, but the red is harder to see unless it's a little darker.
We are tempted to get another one so Mom and Dad can play with him, or when he has friends over.
Very nice product for a decent price.

My children (6&9y/o) who are Star Wars fans, got these for Xmas. Right out of the box, no assembly, & easy to use, it was a hit and still is 1 week later. 2 colors, humms, clash sound on any contact. They love playing with them in a darkened room. They have been hitting things pretty hard and no scratches, cracks, or breaks. The 6 year old also plays alone, fighting any inanimate object, perfecting his 'moves', and enjoying the sounds. A true value fun toy (shop for -$[...] price tag)
My son will be so excited come Christmas!

My two year old son has been obsessed with Star Wars and he could watch it all day if he could. He takes his toy guns and shoots and the droids and then takes his gun and holds it like a lightsaber making the "whooosh" noises at the screen. He will love it and I tested it out ofcourse hehe. I like how light it is and teh fact that itchanges colors at the press of a button.
The darker it gets, the better it is

If you turn on this lightsaber during the daytime, it isn't very bright. However, wait until dusk or in a dark room, it looks pretty sweet. While it is nowhere in the same league as a Master Replica, it is sturdy enough to duel with your lightsaber carrying friends (or foes). It is a little heavier than the non-electric lightsabers, but the light and sound effects make it worth it.
If you're looking for something more awe inspiring, that is going to be $$$ instead of $20. It is suitable for the kids, though too much of a toy for the hard core Star Wars fanatics (maybe).
