Average router
2009-03-02
Ive been having this year close to 3 yrs now.
Guess what its been replaced 3 times by linksys.
First time, just 6 months later for some reason it bricked, got a replace.
Second one ran for 2 yrs ok, with power reset every 2-3 months but
was fine. But when you apply a upgrade it bricked,
Third one is going strong now. No issues so far.
Only good thing about this is its cheap and does its job with little hassles.
Plenty of bad things to complain from a networking expert config point of view.
But not worth to mention for the low cost I got this for.
The two replacements I got was for free, so nothing to complain either

Two broken

I bought two of these. The first one bricked after a firmware update failed. Another one bricked after normal use about 2 months after the first one died.
good coverage with a good price

the CD-based setup didn't work because it couldn't find out my connection maybe because it needs dialing, soI had to configure it myself but other than that everything was OK, maybe it's not that fast but till now it's stable.
Don't buy this!

Having used many Linksys products for many years I have to say that this router is really crappy. Can't handle many wireless and wired connections at the same time and then freezes so you have to unplug and replug the power connector: Really annoying. It happens all the time. Save your many and frustations. Go buy another product, like the WRT54G (the non compact version) which has two antennas by the way.
Linksys Compact Wireless Router WRT54GC

Router is working just fine. It did not come alive right out of the box using the provided CD-rom instructions and set up software. My more computer literate son-in-law was needed to do his magic.

Compact all-in-one Internet-sharing Router, 4-port Switch, and 54Mbps Wireless-G Access Point. Almost 5 times faster than 802.11b, but can also interoperate with any 802.11b device (at 11Mbps).The Linksys Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router is really three devices in one small box. There's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect both screaming fast Wireless-G (802.11g at 54Mbps) and Wireless-B (802.11b at 11Mbps) devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly, or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.Once your computers are connected to the Router and the Internet, they can communicate with each other too, sharing a printer, digital music, picture and document files, and multi-player or on-line games. To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G Broadband Router can encode all wireless transmissions with WEP or industrial-strength WPA Personal encryption. The Router can serve as a DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility. And the tiny form factor fits any home or desktop. With the Linksys Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multi-player games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!
Compact Router is a Good Value!

I chose this Linksys router because of past experience with their products. In my opinion, they offer a good product for a modest price.
The Linksys WRT54GC is a compact router that is a good value for your money. It meets a need in my work that I have for a small router that easily fits in my laptop bag for travel.
The router is wireless and has excellent range using the built-in antenna. The router has capability for an external antenna (sold separately.) It has four wired ports for connection to any wired network devices. The wireless is easily secured using WEP or MAC address authentication.
All in all, if you have a need for a small portable router that is inexpensive, but has capabilities found in much more expensive units, I strongly recommend this one.
Great Travel Router

This has been the best compact/travel routers that I have used over the past couple of years. It is small enough to carry within my computer bag. The transmitter power can be enhanced by the external antenna jack, but I have found that the reach is sufficient enough to reach across to several adjoining hotel rooms. The four port switch allows for additional connections from non-wireless computers. This router can also be configured as a access point by enabling the wireless and connecting the network into one of the four hardwired jacks instead of the Internet port. I have used several of these routers to extend my wireless zones for trade shows. One drawback is that this router does not have the ability to disable the wireless function and work as a four port switch.
Not a happy experience

I bought this model about one year ago, and had very hard experience on it. Yes, it is compact and looks cute, but that's all. Because of the size, it comes with only an inner anntena. The signal is very poor and my Thinkpad always got discoonected in my bedroom, which is only 10 feet away from the router and there is no obivous obstacle between them. But my thinkpad works well in other wireless networks. Disconnections happened very often. I have three laptop in my home, two Thinkpads and one DELL, none of them can work well with the router, it was hard to get an IP when two laptops were working together. Now I'm using another router which is also made by Linksys, but it is very stable and I'm happy with the new one.
Crashes
2007-11-29
Works fine if you don't use WPA. As soon as I enabled WPA, it will crash every few days and require rebooting. Google it, I'm not the only one. (If you don't know what WPA is, learn - unless you don't mind people stealing your internet and passwords. Do not use WEP)
Now, what to do if you already have one? It seems to be the DHCP server that crashes. Here's a workaround: set all your IP's as static. I still can't believe linksys hasn't fixed this in a firmware upgrade.
