So Much Better than my Linksys...
2006-09-29
Wow, this was a find! I purchased it in July and have had no problems with it. I actually purchased it from another site "refurb" and mine is FABULOUS! I am pairing it with an old Netgear WiFi 11b system, and when I was visiting family, they had the D-Link 54g and wow a tri-level home and I had outstanding signal. So I give this a BIG THUMBS UP! I am preparing to purchase either the Next or Mimo router this evening..so wish me luck!
Hardware problem - massive number of interrupts
2006-08-19
I bought this card bundled with the matching router. The router works just fine but I when I tried to use the card in an XP portable (UK Evesham) it produced a massive slowdown in the PCs performance. The CPU utilization went to 100% whenever I plugged the card in. Using SysInternals process monitor showed that 50% of the CPU was being chewed up by Hardware Interrupts, and the rest by deferred procedure calls. So something was very wrong.
It may be because there were 2 wireless routers within range, one a LinkSys and the other the NetGear both oeprating on Channel 11.
Whatever the reason, it was unusable.
Customer service not helpul

Purchased this for my laptop (it was supposed to match the Rangemax modem). The adapter was not being recognized by my machine, and I contacted customer service. The customer service rep was obviously from India (suprize!). Unfortunately my inquiry was not resolved and I returned the product back. Probably would explore other brands next time around.
no problems

I have the rangemax router and this PC card and have had no problems. The range extension is phenomenal. The 108 Mps speed pretty much is only available at home since it goes with the rangemax router. Otherwise I usually get about 54 Mps locally. But when using the laptop on the road (which is my normal mode of operation) I can now log onto access points I could barely detect before. Evidently the antenna is pretty good for what it is. I have not had a disconnect problem from the router but have continued to have the same old tired disconnect problems from the ISP and certain web sites. The asking price for this is a little high but it shouldn't be difficult to find it on sale.
it does extend range if used with a range-max router or wap -- but it's not spectacular

Yes, it does "work". Meaning if you get the RangeMax router or wireless access point, the pair of them do give you better range than (for example) a Netgear WGT624 router with a WGT511 card (and other such combos that I've tried). It's a bit erratic -- the signal level fluctuates, which seems to me to be a software (algorithm) problem. I hope they can improve it further, but for now it's meeting my needs.
A bit more detail: I have a large house, and the networking stuff is all at one end (never mind why), so at the other end of the house the wireless signal would fade to nothing. With this RangeMax combo I can now get an adequate signal (2 bars) where I used to get nothing.
So don't expect too much, but also don't be daunted by the bad reviews, it's worth a try. As you know, every building is different, so as they say in another context, your results may vary.

I did quite extensive research before decided to purchase this item. Most of my friends/reviews suggested buying from Netgear. I followed the product guide to do the installation. It went very smooth and took less than 10 minutes. It has been up running for almost two months now, very sound product!
WPN511 card

Works very well with the Rangemax router. My DLink card kept dropping signal even at close range. This one stays on all the time!
Useless on my NC400

This card makes the CPU usage go to and remain at 80% when it's plugged in. Research on the web tells me I'm not alone in this yet there is no known fix. I had problems with Netgear drivers years ago. I just tried the latest driver, months after buying the card (so they've had time to fix bugs) and it didn't change anything. Sluggish performance, constant calling out to DNS (other cards don't so why would this ione need to?)
ZERO starts, unusable but not heavy enough to be a doorstop. I will never buy Netgear products again.
