No generic supplies!
2008-10-07
Do not under any circumstances buy a Brother printer. They rig the machine so that it will accept no generic toners. You use a brother toner or the machine won't work. Amazing!

not for office use
2008-08-22
This is great for people who don't use a printer very often. Basically, this is a toy. It works fine until its first paper jam, and then you're in for some "fun". Allow yourself 30 minutes to figure out that the error message you are getting ("BACK COVER OPEN") has nothing to do with the back cover actually being open, because it isn't. . . . Get it ? If you need a printer for "adult" use (medium to heavy), buy something else. Otherwise, this is fine.
Good for the price, but some flaws
2008-07-12
I chose this for the price, mainly, and there are some things that you have to deal with in exchange for its low cost. First, when you print multiple pages, they get gummed up in a hurry (less than 10 pages will do it) and your document comes out in a mangled mess on the floor. You therefore have to be present for each print job and take each page out as it comes. Also, I have a Mac and had some serious confusion on how to get it to scan and to where on the computer the file arrived. Customer support was friendly (but a long, long wait for Mac customers) and got the problem solved.
All in all, it's solid, but with shortcomings.
Cheap product for not-so-cheap price
2008-06-11
We purchased our brother printer less than two months ago. From the get-go, we had issues, but mostly when we tried to use cardstock. The printer/copier consistently jams, and yesterday the paper feeder broke completely. Customer service has been non-responsive.
The price was cheap, but not that cheap. Other printer/copier/scanners in the same price range do not self-destruct within six weeks
I do no recommend this nor this company.

Awesome printer, copier, scanner; 4 cents a page

I was really surprised to see that this doesn't have a higher review. I needed a home office printer that provides:
+ laser quality and speed
+ standard office-quality photocopies
+ sheet fed scanning for OCR'ing and archiving documents
+ decent price
This met and exceeded my expectations on all points. Interestingly the most valuable part of the printer as priced is the toner and drum that it ships with. Here is my breakdown of the unit costs:
Toner: $45/2500 pages = 1.8 cents
Drum: $85/12000 pages = .7 cents
Paper: $4/500 pages = .8 cents
Printer (less drum & toner): $70/20000 = .35 cents
Total = 3.65 cents / page
Anyway, here's my response to the negative review that motivated me to add my 5 stars:
Okay, so what multi-function laser printer do YOU recommend that costs around $200 and prints high volumes at a cost of 4 cents per page?
I don't use mine to print envelopes, but while I can't say that your complaints are entirely off base, those issues never really bothered me:
+ It doesn't jam very often
+ Normally it's in sleep mode with a fast wake-up time when I do print. If you think that's loud, you should have been around when they had daisy-wheel printers!
+ I don't need to look at the display at an angle
+ I've photo-copied pages from books with no problem -- just turn down the contrast a notch or two
+ I never read the instructions, but it includes a nifty feature for double-side printing to prevent you from messing it double-sided copies
- It IS a bit of a pain to hit enter after every page scans. Hopefully they'll update the driver to allow multi-page scanning without interaction.
Overall, I think it's a fantastic printer that just reliably produces very fast, high-quality b&w printer and excellent scanning and copying for my purpose. It's also the price/performance leader for relatively low volume laser printers.
Good printer for price but will rips you off on toner
2008-05-24
For the first 2000 or so pages I was very pleased with the printer. It is a little loud and tends to throw paper all over the place on larger print jobs. But overall it performed well considering the cheap price tag.
However, at a little over 2000 pages the printer just stopped half way through my current print job. A message indicating the toner was low appeared. I tried to get it to finish the print job but the stupid thing refused. It was an important print job that I needed to turn in in a couple hours and I had no spare toner cartridge.
Finally after much frustration and after almost destroying the cartridge trying to shake the toner to the front to try to finish the current job I discovered a way to circumvent the low toner "feature". I placed some tape over the little laser "eye" on either side of the toner cartridge. After that I was able to not only finish the current job but print hundreds more pages without any fading. I've gone through another 500 page package and still have not replaced the cartridge.
If brother included this "feature" to sell more toner cartridges then I consider their tactics dispicable. In any case I will pay a little more next time and avoid the brother brand on principle.
I suggest you avoid this one....but if you buy, be sure to have replacement toner cartridges handy....or some electrical tape.
Just plain FANTASTIC and Leopard compatible

Before I decided to purchase a laser printer, I did my research because I wanted to get the most "bang-for-my-buck". We needed this printer/copier because my wife just started her own business.
This printer is just great, let me start with the pros:
- Fast startup time (from sleep to printing in less than 6 seconds)
- Prints fast
- Works with Mac OS X 10.5, Vista, XP
- Colors from the scans are accurate and true
- USB 2.0 connection so prints are promptly printed
- Have so far printed about 600 pages in the couple weeks that we have used it
- Small, fits perfectly on my desk
- Controls on printer for copier are user-friendly and intuitive
- Loading tray has different paper sizes that it can accept
- Holds about 250 pages in paper tray
Cons:
- You need to learn how to position your paper on the scanner bed to have an accurate scan
- When printer starts printing, lights start to flicker (could be my building though)
- Manual feed can only do 1 page at a time
Before I bought my Brother 7020, I read every single review there was, both on Amazon and elsewhere and people kept complaining about the paper curling. Yes, this printer curls your paper, but so do other printers. This is highly exagerrated. If you let the sheet of paper lay there for half a minute, it is all gone. Don't let this deter you from getting this printer.
There is nothing bad about this printer that I did not know yet prior to purchasing. I was not looking for a super-silent printer, nor one that had a copier/scanner built-in, but after doing my research and finding this Brother, I just could not resist buying it. This printer is solidly built, has a cheap replacement for toner (2500 pages compared to 1500 pages for started toner)Brother TN350 Black Toner Cartridge and is fun and easy to use.

Overall, I would rate this printer for six stars (if I could only give that). If you are thinking about purchasing a laser printer that has a scanner and copier built in, I challenge you to do your research. You will find that this Brother printer is not only cheap, but also has a low cost to maintain. You will also find that Brother has a good name, and now I know why. I know that if you do decide to purchase this combo printer, you will NOT regret it.
Thank you for reading my review.
Excellent product - does everything I wanted (copier)
2008-04-29
I bought this for its copier function - nothing else. It does a great job as a copier. The only thing I would want is more memory - it only has memory for 8 originals (of the type I copied), which makes it difficult to copy and sort larger document sets. Otherwise, it is great, fast, and low priced. The automatic feeder has worked perfectly.
