Spotty Quality

The Squirt S4 has exactly the features that I want in a very small pocket tool: knife, screwdrivers, tweezers, and some scissors that are large enough to be useful. However, I had to exchange my Squirt TWICE before I finally got one that was good quality. The first one had issues with getting the small screwdriver to fold back in. The second one had a bent knife and the scissors didn't cut well. The third is a keeper, except that the aluminum sides tend to get worn fairly quickly.
What's going on with Leatherman's these days?

I am quite dissatisfied with the quality of the new Leatherman tools. I purchased two Leatherman Squirt S4's and the Leatherman Micra from Amazon recently and was surprised to see that all of them arrived scratched up(like it was used before). Some scratches were wide and deep enough to cause cuts on your hands when you use the tool. I purchased the Leatherman Charge XTi from another vendor, which was also not of high quality that Leatherman was once known for. I have owned the original Leatherman Wave since it first came out and have had no problems with it. It seems like the newer models are being mass produced without some type of quality control. Or maybe someone is repackaging used Leatherman tools and selling them as new...
I will not be buying anymore Leatherman tools until they start making high quality multitools as they were once known for.
If you want to buy one of these, either for yourself or as a gift, I would suggest you go to a store and look at it before you buy. Make sure there are no scratches or smeared letterings or any other problems...The ones I recieved were definitely not good enough to give as gifts.

This is my first Leatherman brand tool although I have owned other fold-out imitations. This thing works smoothly and is incredibly light. Very handy for the pocket or the keychain. This will be one tool that will be in my camping bag.

After buying a few of these as gifts, I decided to get one for myself. It's now the only knife that I carry. Because it's so small (e.g. small thin blades, small scissors, etc.), it's not as good at cutting as a larger knife, but it also isn't so heavy (like the larger leathermans) that it makes my pants fall down.
Super Useful Tool for your Keychain 2008-01-28
I love the squirt. Perfect size versus functionality. The scissors and sharp knife are most useful. I always carry it around and for many years have found uses for it multiple times a week from simple little things to "oh, I can use my leatherman for that" kind of things. Top quality, I love it.

A good pocket knife/multi-tool.
In my quest for the meaning of life, the Leatherman Squirts are the best small multi-tools. I feel naked without it. The small Victorinox and Gerbers just cannot compare.
Don't leave home without it 2007-04-12
I've been carrying a Leatherman Squirt S4 for about 5 years. During that time I've lost two of them. When that sad day comes, I always immediately replace it.
Don't let the size fool you. If you're looking for a really useful little tool that is also unobtrusive, you will not go wrong with the S4. It is perfect for handling those daily little office and home chores. 90% of the time, I reach for the scissors. They operate smoothly and cut well. The actual knife blade is small, but works well enough considering the size and it ideal for cutting tape on a mail package. The tweezers can be used to remove that occassional splinter.
I did make the mistake of buying a Micra at one point. The S4 is a much more refined and useful tool. The S4 has nice smooth edges for comfortable carry and you can use the tools without opening the scissors. In contrast, the Micra has rough edges and awkward functional design.

I have used the Leatherman Micra for years, and thought it was time for a change. The squirt is more money, but very handy, especially now because you don't have to open the scissors to get at the tools.
