Amazing antenna with design flaw
2008-07-19
This is my second silver sensor. These devices perform better than any "rabbit ears" I have ever used. However, the second one had a faulty cable connecter which I was unable to repair. I had attached a cable but could not unscrew it. I tried to use pliers to loosen it but only suceeded in twisting the wires until they broke.
digital antenna - it works!
2008-07-15
I got the antenna last night and I was skeptical that it would work after I opened the box. It doesn't plug into the wall? that perplexed me - because I was replacing an RCA analog antenna that did.
I re-ran the set up program to scan channels - and comparing the analog to digital - these are the results
RCA analog = 17 analog channels - only 6 that worked well
PHILIPS digital = 13 analog channels (more than half work well) - and 16 digital channels
Most of the digital channels were mirrors of the analog channels - but in 1080i definition - clear as they come. And those few extra added were icing on the cake.
I will need to explore how the antenna works still - because I noted that most of the digital are showing in full screen, while the analog are showing wide screen. I'd prefer them all to run as wide screen. I'm wondering if there's a setting on the tv that I need to change to, for this - or if it is the channel signal.
I also was hoping that the antenna would have an HDMI connection - but, it's a regular optical connection. Still - I'm impressed with the output and am glad I tried a digital antenna and am NOT paying a monthly cable charge for access to basic TV (all the major networks + a little more).
Excellent antenna for both analog and digital TV use - VHF and UHF
2008-07-06
I purchased this item over a month ago in anticipation of getting the converter boxes necessary for over the air digital TV. I was using it on my old analog set and it brought in all my local stations, both VHF and UHF. I'm 20 miles west of Chicago and even CBS 2 (which is usually a fuzzy picture) came in fairly clearly. I just attached the digital converter box and was amazed that I got 10 more stations and a gorgeous clear picture on all stations without having to move the antenna position at all. I have it on top of a high bookcase behind the TV. The only problem is I cannot get a signal for CBS2 in the Chicago area. I've heard from others with the converter boxes that they can't bring in channel 2 either, so for that one station, I have to bypass the box and go back to the analog reception. I got one of the converter boxes from Best Buy (the Apex) that has the Analog pass thru feature. But I am getting over 40 channels, all my regular VHF and UHF plus an extra 12 digital channels. Other than it being a rather "flimsy" antenna, since I don't move it around much, hopefully it will hold up. Great digital reception.
An equal to Terk

Easier to assemble than the Terk. Antenna elements must be straightened (easy to do). Less expensive. Excellent reception through many walls.
Exellent product

Compared to other Antennas I tried this was far superior. I can get a signal in a lot of places. It even got a signal in a basement with no windows.
Not what I expected :(

I have the Samsung 50A650 50" plasma - their Top-End. My 15 year old antenna worked better then this one. Originally I was going to buy "Zineth" Silver Sensor. So
I say skip this one, don't waste your money.
Silver Sensor great buy for the money
2008-07-25
Having a need for portable DTV 8VSB reception I looked around for reasonably priced UHF only set top antennas. I read a few reviews and Blogs claiming the Philips Silver Sensor antenna was highly recommended. I bought two from Amazon dot com, best choice I could have made.
I coupled the Philips Silver Sensor to my Zenith DTT900 ATSC converter box and was amazed at the reception. It does a better job than most set tops at rejecting off axis signals, in other words it is MORE DIRECTIONAL than the run of the mill UHF LOOP type set top antennas.
The antenna is not built heavy duty but is reasonable for most applications. It is a log-periodic directional wide band Yagi.
Being light and easy to assemble and disassemble it is great for trips such as vacations. It comes boxed as three pieces, the antenna, the base and mounting strut. There is a 75 ohm coaxial cable fitted with F connectors included for connection to your set.
A real plus to this antenna is the fact that the antenna itself has an F connector on the back end of the antenna and not a permanently connected cable. You can use the cable that came with it or choose a low loss longer cable for portable DXing.
I recommend this antenna to anyone needing UHF only local DTV reception, it does a great job.
Philips PHDTV1 UHF/HDTV indoor antenna performance
2008-07-25
I bought a Philips PHDTV1 UHF/HDTV indoor antenna in order to use my 19" brand new Sharp LCD TV. I live about 15 miles away from Manhattan where most of the HDTV stations are located. I was extremely disappointed that the signals received were very poor. I replaced it with a Radio Shack indoor antenna (catalog #15-1868) and it pulls in all the HDTV stations crystal clear and this antenna cost me less than $20.00. Therefore, I have to conclude that the Philips antenna that I bought is piece of junk and I do not recommend anyone to buy it.
Great item at a great price!

Perfect inexpensive antenna for the new digital UHF/HDTV converter. No need to spend more money when this works perfectly.
Better than those old "Rabbit Ears"
2008-07-22
After reading reviews on various HD antennas, I settle on the Philips PHDTV1. It was easy to assemble (no screws; everything snaps into place), and it fit easily on my TV. With the "rabbit ears", there were a couple of stations that I would only pick up sporadically. Once I started using the HDTV1, I received all of the digital stations and with improved signal strength. I would definitely recommend this for your TV if you are getting over the air transmissions!!
