It Works
2008-07-28
I just got this printer today. I don't use a network so I don't know anything about some of the issues some people have stated. I plugged it into my MAC it recognized it and I printed my first document seconds later.
No software needed.
The copier works well. I have not tried the scanner. Don't print with this thing during a meeting it it loud! Works great for my needs. Would have given it a 5 if it was not so loud.
NEVER another HP Product!

During the honeymoon, My HP2840 all-in-one was wonderful. All the things it can do, and such high quality! So impressive! I only used the color laser periodically, and not heavily, doing all my B&W stuff on an old 6p workhorse, much quicker, and at a much lower price per copy. (Back when HP cared about the products they put out)
Before long, my HP 2840 made one of those scary, grinding noises that so many others report, and *POOF* would only print on the right 1/4 of the page. (The rest of the page was blank.)
WHILE UNDER WARRANTY, HP could not have been better. Once the fuser went bad, and *POOF* a free one appeared in my mailbox in a few days flat. On the latter incident, HP sent a tech to my home, he worked for THREE DAYS to get this puppy purring again, and the honeymoon went on again.
A few months later, and the same exact incident happened, except this time, two weeks out of warranty. HP no longer knew that I was a customer, Phone help was $25., and they could/would not recommend a tech to fix it.
For $900.00, I purchased a Foot and a half by foot and a half by two foot 135 lb. boat anchor, that no one can seem to fix, (Or they need half the new price of the printer to do it.)
So... Let's review: for $900.00, my cost per copy is about $3.00.
The printer no longer prints anything.
My desk is occupied by a 135lbs foot and a half square worthless
piece of junk, whose total capabilities, at this point is SENDING
faxes (Can't receive - because it can't print.) Scanning, (things
that you do not need to print, of course...
Oh... and it does still Read my camera card.
The most useless technology investment I have EVER met. -
EVEN worse than my two HP laptops - One won't play CD's and the other has a high pitched whine when you connect out of the sound card. (I'm a disk Jockey - this is what I use the laptops for)
I'm absolutely convinced that HP stands for HORRIBLE PRODUCT, and I have no use for HP whatsoever at this point!
Good print quality, BAD drivers and software, expensive to own
2008-05-20
After a year of owning this printer we finally had to switch it out for a cheaper Brother with more features and functioning software. This All in one prints really well after you manage to configure it. The scanning software still doesnt work on the networtk with Vista. Duplexing is limited. No wifi. The toner and drums are expensive. If you have XP and are connected directly to it, it works really well, if not, its a gamble.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this product

This is our office's second 2840 all in one printer. We love it. It's great for a smaller office setting and has great functions on it.
Bad network device
2008-05-13
We got this printer 1 year ago, drivers for vista took forever to be available.
Drivers are big and bulky and take 40 - 50min to install per machine.
Network scanning feature doesn't work in neither Windows XP or Vista clients. (We have 20+computers and tried turning on/off firewalls etc)
Print quality is very good both in BW and color, but slow. The printer wastes a lot of toner and drum. The supplies count pages and when the count is up you have no printer. Even a single character counts as 1 page.
HP support only shipped a CD with drivers and after not being able to solve the problems, ignored any other request. We replaced the printer with a Brother MFC series and all users are happy.
Buyer beware, this printer is no good.
VIsta Software non-functional

Worst software installation in the world
2008-05-06
What are they thinking? A 1 hour long install process and full of garbage install programs. And on Windows XP they should be using the default drivers and scanner on Windows. Not recommended for normal use unless you have plenty of time to burn.
Somewhat noisy and quirky, but excellent quality prints and easy installation.

The HP Color LaserJet 2840 is everything I hoped it would be, aside from being kind of loud when it prints. The plastic casing of the product is bordering on flimsy...I guess I will find out after several months if this thing is going to rattle itself apart. Print/copy quality is fantastic. Very happy with it. And once a print job gets going, it is quite quick (black and white). Curious to see how long the color cartridges last--we print our own letterhead and it has a lot of color in it, and we print many letters. Installation was a breeze. We have two computers--one is a Mac and the other is a PC--and they are both hooked up to the printer via a share switch. Installation of software on both the Mac and PC was virtually problem free, and the printer works beautifully with the switch. We don't have a network, so it's a direct plug-and-play for us, so I can't offer an opinion about how this printer works on a network, but if the share switch is any indication of that, then I can't see that a network would pose much of a problem. If you can get this machine for MUCH less than full price (HP sells for nine hundred, we got it on sale for six hundred), then go for it. There isn't much else out there in the six hundred price range that is comparable or even as good. Great value printer.
Disappointed in this product
2008-03-12
I wished I had read more of the user reviews prior to purchasing this product. It prints a nice page, scans images, and can send a fax, but so could my HP Laserjet3200 before it was time to upgrade. This printer is certainly much faster than my older HP.
This printer is super noisy and a color toner eating machine.
I called HP soon after receiving the product because I noticed that even though I was printing black only pages, it was still using the YMC toners. They helped me put it on black only print, but please note that if there is a fax error report that prints, it will spit a little blue ink on the page. This is completely useless and only wastes blue toner.
I was surprised how long it took to install this unit.
If you get this printer, I strongly suggest that you do not install the color toners unless you plan on running a color job. I printed 5 pages that used a little bit of color and the once a week fax error page report in the 3 months that I have had the printer and I am down to 94% on the color toners and 87% on the black toner. I basically print invoices and fax pages (all black ink) and this makes no sense on how I am down to the low 90s with barely use of color.
This printer constantly calibrates itself. I leave the printer on all the time and there are times when I haven't printed anything for over an hour and it starts making loud sounds. I contacted HP support and they told me about a few features on how to minimize the calibration times. It would make sense that on installation you could dictate how often this would happen.
Don't put this printer next to a phone. There were numerous times that I was speaking with someone and I did not initiate any printer command and this 2840 printer starts making tons of noise. People ask what the heck is that?
I utilized the online support for this printer and that was a big waste of 6 hours. It didn't correct my problems and all it did was keep it through the motions of calibration and noise making.
I am grateful that toner was included with the printer to start off, but when I have to replace the color toner, I don't plan on putting it in the printer until I have a color print job.
I have the printer hooked up to an XP PC and for some reason it won't print my Microsoft Works files. An hour before installing this printer, I was able to print the Works files to a Lexmark printer with no issues. When I tried to print, I got several garbage pages before I hit cancel to stop the madness.
I can't believe that this is one of the best all in one printers in this category.
Terrible
2008-02-21
This product sucks. We use this product for our color copier in our office and it is terribly slow, loud, and expensive to maintain. Furthermore we have had this machine slightly over a year and now we are incurring all types of issues with it. We called HP and since our warranty expired they want to charge us $480 just to come out and see what is wrong with it. DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE.
