Good, but where are the audio outputs???
2006-07-10
I bought this system because it was highly rated by a consumer group as having excellent sound. They're right - it sounds awesome with soundtrack-heavy DVD's. However, I'm going to get rid of it because I already have an extensive home theater system that I don't want to replace, and there is NO WAY to output from this receiver to my current system!! Rather, I can output VIDEO, but not AUDIO. What kind of idiot at Panasonic decided that no one would want to output audio? Granted, the speakers that come with it are great, and the dialog-enhancement feature makes it much easier to hear what the actors are actually saying (you'll hear dialog that you totally miss at the theatre.) It would be a great system for someone who has nothing else they need to hook up - thus the 4 stars. For me, however, it's just a few hookups short of basic utility.
Nothing but Disappointment, and I'm Not Alone!

Just like a previous reviewer, R. Adams from Austin, I have had nothing but the very same problems with my Panasonic home theatre. It is alarming to hear that he has had the same lack of customer service from Panasonic that I have experienced.
Since day #1, I experienced major problems with it. After nearly five hours of disassembling my old speakers and putting this one together, I began to test it with a DVD. Within minutes, the sound shut off altogether. The movie still played, but the volume was nonexistant. I went over everything again... EVERYTHING... and tried again. Same problem. I had to turn the unit off and then on again, and the volume was back, but it happened repeatedly. It became almost comical; you buy something like this to upgrade your movie-watching experience, and instead, it turned what little leisure time my family is afforded into misery, and I am honesty not exaggerating.
I've tried contacting Panasonic four times regarding this issue; the first time, they told me to take the entire system apart, make sure none of the wires are frayed, and put it back together again. It had taken me hours to put the thing together to begin with, and I'd already done exactly what they had said to do, but still, I moved furniture, traced all the wires to make sure they were fine and unfrayed, and put everything together again.
Still, nothing. I watched "Phantom of the Opera" one night just to see how often the sound cut out... it took almost four and a half hours to watch the movie, and I had to re-start the theatre a mind-blowing 214 times.
Panasonic never responded to any of my further inquiries. Evidently, the had stolen my money and that was good enough for them. I will never buy any Panasonic product again, almost entirely based on he way Panasonic failed to address the problem. I feel robbed.
I love it.. EXCEPT can't use headphones and use speakers at same time

I have this system and it has been very good.
I have used audio/video cables to allow me to connect my cable and vcr, however, I just bought some wireless headphones, but when I plug them into the headphone jack, it doesn't allow me to also have regular sound on. I NEED some way of having another ouptut, right now it will only output through the digital receiver cable that goes to the subwoofer... Is there a digital reciver splitter?

Great system and sound. I have the rear wireless unit too. Works flawlessly. Why 4 star then? - won't play PAL DVDs. ALL cheap DVD player can play PAL on NTSC TV, don't understand why Panasonic/Sony can't or won't do that.
this is awsome

I got it this thanks giving. I was keen on getting one and was waiting for a decent deal. Finally got it for $199. A great price for this system. It took me less than an hour to set it all up. Sound clarity is great! I use it my living room (15x25 feet) and it sounds really nice.
The only negative was that speakers/woofer connects thro the DVD player which means you can't use it while playing TV/cable/VCR. But that could be easily fixed - I had to get a audio-video cable (for 3 bucks) to give my TV output to the DVD player and it worked just fine.
Overall, an excellent home theater system!
Panasonic Unresponsive Over Defective System
2005-10-05
This is a complaint about the Panasonic SC-HT733 home theater system. This system repeatedly shut itself off for no apparent reason. Panasonic had me take it twice to a local electronic store under warranty but they were unable to fix it. I ultimately returned it through the merchant and bought another brand. I will never buy any Panasonic product again, not because it was defective, but because of the way Panasonic addressed the problem. It was a big problem to disconnect everything and take it in while they performed trial and error. Panasonic should have just replaced it. I didn't like the attitude of anyone I spoke with there. I also wasn't even able to complain directly to the company. On the phone they gave me a case number and never followed up. An online feedback form didn't work. I am through with this company.
Good value

I bought this system about 4 months ago and am pretty happy with it. I'm using it in a 14'x22' Family Room and I'd say for a room that size something with a little more power might be even better. But the sound quality and performance has been very impressive for the price. The remote could be designed a little more user friendly, and more inputs would be useful.
I shopped around before buying this and found that in order to get something with better specs, performance, and features I would have had to spend at least $150 more. I really think this is the best value out there in the $200 to $300 range.
All together Great system

My brother just got this system for really cheap at Best Buy and he asked me to look at it to see if it was a good deal to keep. After that I liked the system so much that I bought it for myself. It has really good sound for the price and the 5 Disc dvd player is essential. Its also pretty nice looking. Overall, im very pleased with it.
