PANASONIC MAKES GARBAGE! (MAYBE NOT - an update - responsibility taken by manufacturer)
2006-04-11
(April, 2006) HOME THEATER? - PANASONIC MAKES GARBAGE! I bought a similar DVD Home Theater Sound System, Panasonic Model SC-HT900 less than three years ago and the sound has gone out! The product had normal use and good care by two fifty-somethings. Panasonic has a service center over an hour's drive away. After patronizing me as though I was an idiot, the customer "care" person on the phone would not offer any breaks, other than a "slight discount" on the purchase of a newer model (equivalent to a retail sale). Why would I want to take a risk on the SC-HT 930 when the earlier model went belly-up before its time? What gall - attempting to capitalize on their failed product! I have been told it's not worth the anticipated cost of repairs. So after spending $500 on a product that looks brand new, two years later I have to trash it? Nobody should have to take an absolutely new-looking product to the land fill because the manufacturer's greed overrode the ethics of making a quality product. My last surround sound system was a cheap RCA; actually lasted exactly three years (Longer than the Panasonic) before it failed. We should not buy products from companies that do not take responsibility for their products. I would not even consider buying this without adding the cost of the longest extended warranty you can find. As for me, NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY PANASONIC!
DECEMBER, 2006 UPDATE: Some time after I wrote the above review, I again contacted Panasonic, spoke to another representative and she seriously considered my situation. She arranged to have the product repaired, free, at a central repair center (I paid shipping to; Panasonic paid return). The amp works again, though it still gets very hot, so I cool it with a small external fan; hopefully to preclude another failure. After some months of use, it has not failed - and having had some of my faith in Panasonic restored, I just bought a Panasonic TV. I hope this home theater and other current models are improved versions and that this company is learning that old-fashioned customer service pays off in the long run.
To conclude, I based my review of the above model on my earlier Model SC-HT900 (no longer in production), which had an amp failure that Panasonic finally repaired - although I suspect to original component design specifications. I suspect newer models may be improved. But for the initial amp failure, I would give the performance of my system FIVE stars.
Quality issues
2006-04-08
This systems is the next evolution of the HT900 and HT920. Both of which had designed flaws. I spoke with a panasonic service engineer about the HT900 and he verified a popping noice coming from my sub was a know issue with the sub, but no recall was issues. After 3 months of discussion they replaced with 920. After owning a little over a year I had issues with the sub on this system also. There local certified repair company told me there was an issue with the design of the circuit board on this system. Different problem from the 900. They said they though Pansonic would replace but after numerous conversations they did not. They make good TVs but low quality Home Theaters in a Box and don't stand behind their product.
Better Options Exist ...

I just wanted to make the point that for $300-$350 you can get the SC-HT820/HT830/HT833 system, which despite the lower number is arguably better. The 820/830 system has AM/FM, fully controlled from the remote, 5-disc changer, and a mid-high end VCR with high-speed transport, and very good speakers and sound (does just great in our 15x30 living room.) This model sacrifices AM/FM/VCR for a little more stylishness, but imho its not a better system.
best value

this is the fourth one i have purchased from amazon for the various rooms in my house , and as always, fast delivery and flawless. You can certainly spend more as some of my friends have, but frankly i can't hear the difference, for most home that is smaller then a castle, this is all you would need, i save $200 for not buying the consumer version plasma Tv and the net difference is $150 and wow what a great value. the only thing i hope for is taht panasonic make the remote a bit simpler, in the dark, it is impossible to use the dozens of little button that do not light up. Aside from that, there simply isn't a better unit out there for $350.
Great Home Theater Setup for under $500

Surround sound effect amazing. No need to go to the movies anymore. We added the wireless unit for the surround speakers to avoid running wires to back of the room. DVD player very easy to hook up and use. Very satisfied customer.
Surround Sound will work with Cable

We orignally had the same problem - only had surround sound when the DVD was being used.
By rearranging the audio inputs on the TV and DVD player my husband was able to achieve the desired results - Total Surround Sound on the TV (with cable) or with the DVD player.
