2006 Norton Internet Security Software is a loser 2005-11-27
I have been a satisfied Norton user for 8 years now. As usual, I was about to upgrade my 2004 Norton Internet Security module to the new 2006 update, here's what happened:

1. I was asked to remove all my Norton software from my computer before installing the download (duh! I had no back up of the program or install file on my original software.)
2. The program de-installed Spam Blocker from Norton as well as NISS.
3. The 2006 upgrade installed smoothly. Went to try and get onto the internet with my Microsoft Outlook that I had been using for the last 5 years and it would not work.
4. Called technical support (India). Took four calls before I could get anyone that I could understand.
5. Told me to de-install and re-install (twice) 2006. Did that. Still would not work.
6. Support technician said the problem was Microsoft Outlook or Explorer that had been working fine until I installed 2006 upgrade.
7. Spent 5 days trying to get help. Finally took all Norton off my computer. Explorer and Outlook worked fine. Lost Spam Blocker, but reinstalled and is integrating well with Outlook.
8. Called American Express and told them to void my American Express charge of $49.95 to Symantec.

Will attempt to put just Norton Virus Control back on my computer since I still think it is the best, but will never consider Norton Internet Security Software of any kind in the future.

Mike

PS - I just extended my service contract on my other computer using the Norton 2004 software and it is working fine.

What a disapointment 2005-11-07
I've used Norton for many, many years and have always sworn by it as the best anti-virus protection available on the market. With the 2003 version, I switched to Norton Internet Security and loved it. It's always worked perfectly, and I've bought a new year of definitions each year. I planned to update my NIS 2003 version again this year when it expired, but about a month before the expiration, I got an offer from Symantec to buy the NIS 2005 Antispam version for a low price. I decided to go ahead and upgrade from 2003 to 2005 at the low price.

Last weekend my subscription to NIS 2003 expired, so instead of re-subscribing, I instead downloaded and installed the NIS 2005 version. That's when the problems started. After downloading and installing, I updated the virus definitions. This went fine, and I thought I was through with it. A while later I went into the NIS program and when I opened it up, only part of the screen appeared--the border, without the middle with all the buttons to click. It did this everytime I opened the program, so I decided to reinstall the program. After restalling and updating the definitions, again I thought I was through.

Little did I know my troubles were just starting. After installing the NIS 2005, I could no longer go onto the internet. My computer also started freezing up. I had to restart it numerous times and as I tried to troubleshoot it. After about an hour, I just said to myself let my computer work long enough before freezing up so I could uninstall NIS 2005. After a while, I was able to do that.

Once I uninstalled NIS 2005, I again assumed I was back to business. I would just look for another anti-virus and firewall program. But no, I could not go on the internet. I checked my wireless connections and found the IP addresses for my network were all screwed up. I worked on it for hours, checking and rechecking my network connections. I reinstalled my wireless card. I tried another wireless card. Nothing worked, after a whole day of working on it. Finally I had to admit that NIS 2005 had completely hosed my computer and my network connection.

So after many wasted hours, and many more curses at Symantec for its product, I had to use Windows XP System Restore to roll my computer back to how it existed prior to the NIS fiasco. I decided to use the free McAfee anti-virus and firewall available to me from AOL. However, McAfee couldn't install because it detected an existing anti-virus program on my computer, even though I had deleted Norton NIS 2005. I had to go to the Symantec website and download 3 different programs, and run them, along with deleting various files and registry entries, in order to finally get rid of all the various pieces of NIS 2005 and my prior NIS 2003.

So after being a good Norton customer for many years, I've now gone to the other side of another good customer who has now been hosed by Norton software that screwed up my computer and internet connection! I hate to say it, but now I'll never be a Norton customer again, and cannot recommend the program to anybody. The risks aren't worth it.

Good product - Hard to install. 2005-10-26
I already had Norton Anti-Virus (I believe 2004) and Norton Firewall 2005. My contract was expiring, so I decided to upgrade to the combined package. Even though I was basically upgrading Norton products, it still took a couple hours to install.
The setup/installation process did not know how to remove the old versions of its own software. It half uninstalled it and gave up, displaying an error message with the typical options of "Abort, Retry or Ignore". I tried "Retry" a couple times, with no luck. I then switched to "Ignore". It installed the software but it wasn't working properly. I clicked on the link Norton provided for fixing the install bug and it was talking about such daunting options like hacking the registry. I finally went into Control Panel and did the Windows uninstall. This cleared up the problem and I was then able to successfully install. Because I was forced to take this route, I lost most of my previous settings.
I do like the software and know I can count on it but have always had problem installing norton products.

Norton Internet Security and Antispyware 2007-12-28

I had to send back to Symantec. It would not download on my computer as I have Windows ME. I was told the 2005 edition would download on my computer, but it wouldn't. They are sending me a refund.

I appreciate the fast service and the good attitude on the phone, and politeness given to me. They were ready to please the customer.

Norton Internet Security slows down my system to a crawl 2006-10-24
NIS 2005 AntiSpyware edition came with my Dell computer that I purchased that year. While I'm satisfied with the protection that it gives me, I find that the computer moves very slowly at times, especially at startup. When I start up my computer, I take a 5 minute snack break to make better use of my time. I've since updated to the 2007 version and observe the same thing. Norton has too much going on in the background, which greatly compramises system speed. For optimum protection with greater efficiency (smaller footprint), I recommend trying NOD 32 Antivirus, available through [...].

Norton Internet Security 2005 Antispyware Edition creates as many problems as it solves 2005-12-17
After reading many reviews, both postitive and negative, of the Norton Internet Security 2005 Antispyware Edition, I went ahead and purchased it. I have been a Norton user for years, so I decided to take a chance. It installed easily and worked beautifully for almost two months. Then my computer started crashing. After many attempts to find the root of the problem and after much expense, I am convinced, as other reviewers warned, the Norton software is to blame. Now I cannot turn off my computer without its crashing; I am unable to update my antivirus protection because I get a message via the Norton software that it cannot make an Internet connection. (I have followed all directions for correcting this that is found on the Norton website, but nothing works.) Also, the software really slows down the receiving of email. And forget getting any help from Norton other than what is written on their website. In essence, I have paid a hefty sum for software that causes crashes, causes sluggish performance and worst of all, cannot give me up-to-date protection. I feel totally ripped off. So tonight I am going to uninstall Norton (which from past experience I suppose will involve more than a simple uninstall click) and try PC-cillin.
I would recommend any potential Norton buyers to beware.

A Multi Dollar Allusion to Buying an Apple Computer 2005-12-14
This product is an absolute menace to my normal daily internet activity. It blocks Java links well, so well in fact, that I am having troubles getting around on quite a few pages and also other strange stuff is happening to my page-layouts.

Sometimes I have to refresh my pages several times in order to use the links to others or see friendly pop-ups; that even will not work after you switch off NIS's (Norton Internet Security's) pop-up blocker (Internet Explorer's pop-blocker also switched of and IE restarted). The Anti-Spam feature on mine crashes every time it is used.

Then comes the hassle of installing it, it truly is a science of its own ... I have NEVER in my life experienced any product giving me SO much trouble. I am not a computer crack, but I'm no dummy either. Be careful not to install this product over an older version like 2003 or 2004 without removing one of these versions COMPLETELY (!) first ... that includes ALL registry entries as well!

When it comes to upgrading the virus definitions and program upgrades, well there must be some kind of secret sequence for doing this properly. First of all it is not possible to upgrade in one session, if you have an older version it will take ages ... after which you will discover the program no longer functions ... in fact I believe there are more error codes than program lines in the script that runs this software. It's hopeless ... truly hopeless. Though I might think of one way to outrun this nuisance ... get an Apple In fact I think this product is a multi dollar allusion to buying one!
