BEWARE if you use WordPerfect
2008-04-16
I purchased this printer for our law office. While it is a nice printer, it DOES NOT function with WordPerfect, which is the word processor we use. Nor was this problem mentioned in any review I came across. [Edited to add that I did find a work around: you have to load the PrintServer120.exe file at start up. Something that HP certainly never told me. At any rate, all's well that ends well and this one did.]
After 3 years still no Vista driver that works

I'll never buy a HP product again - sitting here with a Laserjet 1020 I'll never be able to use again after upgrading to Vista. Tried all fixes and workarounds, no luck. HP LaserJet 1020 Printer (Q5911A#ABA)
I'm very happy with this printer

The printer is very fast. It takes only a few seconds to get first page, even when the printer is idle. Print quality is very good for the price. And it comes with full toner for 2000 pages, not a demo toner. Manual duplex option is very convenient.

I got this printer for ninety dollars and free shipping from NewEgg. Quite a deal, so I added 2 $42 aftermarket cartridges (still free S&H).
I remember when tiny personal HP Laser printers were $1000 and guess I was overwhelmed that I could have one now at an economical price. Anyway, using a solder gun to make a hole in empty cartridges they can be refilled for a few dollars now, it seems. So I would like to maintain my cartridges investment with a Multifuntion printer. However, the few HP ones are about $400 for laser. Oh, well.
Anyway, this printer cannot be networked with a standalone printer server, but needs a dedicated PC to use its processing power, because it is a WinPrinter, much like a WinModem which don't have controllers.
You should check negative reviews for suggestions. Brother has networked, wifi printers very cheap, with other more advanced funtions. And wouldn't you like to be like one of the big boys with their very own copier? Anyway, I really miss not having WiFi printing abilities as sometime it is such an effort to take my laptop over to the printer and plug the USB in for a single print.
A great idea gone terribly wrong...don't waste your money!

This is a great printer until you begin to have spooler issues. It prints quickly & the ink lasts a long time; however, after a short time of satisfactory use you will likely encounter a "print spooler subsystem app has stopped working" error message. This error occurred for me when trying to print pdf documents. The error prohibits any printing, the error message will pop up frequently (even when you haven't sent anything to the printer) and the issue never goes away (there are a few temporary fixes). This error occurred three times for me and I had to finally replace this printer. The HP website has more information on this issue. I highly recommend researching this if you consider buying this printer...but really, don't waste your money.
Great Investment

This printer is hands down, the best piece of technological equipment I've ever invested in. I absolutely love it. The toner lasts a good long time, the price is low (although I'm not sure why the price has nearly doubled since I bought it a few months ago -- maybe it's all the rave reviews!), and is the fastest printer I've ever used.
I can't recommend it enough! HP has all my computer business from now on.
I am so pleased with this computer.

This is a great computer and at such a reasonable price. I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever. It's fast, doesn't jam and I print several pages everyday...unlike the ink-jets, I don't have to replace cartridges frequently.
It arrived in a timely manner. I will shop here again.
Excellent printer for casual home use
2008-05-02
This is by far the best printer I have ever owned for my home.
I use this printer as a casual home printer for printing directions, movie times, reciepts, emails, or just about anything that comes up in the course of a home. To be clear, I don't really print important things very often and usually just print on the back of scrap paper from the office. But when I do need to print something significant like a legal document or a resume or something, this printer holds its own flawlessly. The printer sits right next to my computer, with a fairly small footprint and stays 'on' all the time. When I hit the print button, within about 5 seconds I have a printed page that meets every standard of quality that I have ever deemed relevent for a black and white printer.
I have had the printer for over a year, and have had zero complications, and have not changed the ink once. I have gone through countless ink jet printers, or cousins thereof, over the last decade, and this laser jet simply puts them to shame in 3 categories: 1 - initial cost; 2 - maintenence (so far, zero); and 3 - quality (I have never seen anything but a 'perfect' print come out, no smears, no lines, nothing).
Simply an excellent purchase.
Cannot print a PDF in Vista!
2008-04-23
After trying to work around the issue for days, I got on line with HP customer support. This printer will not print a pdf from acrobat. If you want the ability to print a PDF, you have to download a third party program (FinePrint) set it as your default "printer" to which you "print" all your documents, and then print to the printer from FinePrint. As I work in a business in which a LOT of documents are electronic, and in PDF format, the printer is worthless. Even on the HP website, on THIS printer's data page, there is a "Printable Data Sheet" in PDF format. Well, on any other printer in the world, it would be "printable." Not on this little paperweight.
