Solved a difficult problem
2007-05-16
This inexpensive device has been wonderful because it solved a perplexing problem of hearing my music through my Bose speakers. I had considered the Olive solution, a very expensive and not too reliable option since music is on a laptop hard drive, known to be especially unreliable as HDs go. Plus it costs over a thousand dollars. True, the sound quality is less with MP3, but it is thrilling nonetheless. The one issue I have noted is that from time to time, the iPod lights up and stays lighted up until I remove it from the stand and reinsert it, after which it recharges.
Great Ipod Accessory!

Easy to hook-up. Sounds great with my Sony A/V receiver. And it looks good to boot. Best $ I've ever spent.
low volume problem cured. sounds great

As I listen to hard rock and need a lot of volume, I was pretty disappointed by the initial low volume levels despite cranking my amp up to 11, but I read the reviews and found that using the remote control volume and maxing out the Ipod volume solved the problem. It is nice and loud! Playing with the Ipod equalizer settings also helps get the correct sound. If this lasts a while I will be happy.
Wait... maybe this IS a great product, but...

I'm editing this review the day after I posted it... The problem that I was having inexplicably went away the today. Another reviewer had posted the exact same problem. Tech support said to live with it for a few days, and if the problem returns, let them know and they'd send a replacement. Incidentally, I bought the iPod (30 gig)to replace a 200 disk cd changer that died. WOW this is better! Also, I'd change my rating to 4 stars, but it's not letting me. Here's what I wrote yesterday: The dock works great, except I have to turn the iPod volume all the way up, and then crank my stereo volume up as well. I'll be sending this back. The first time I switch to FM while listening to the iPod, my speakers and ears are going to fry!
Simply way to play your IPOD through your home stereo

Plug in the cable to your stereo and the power to the wall outlet and you are done! I have ceiling speakers in my kitchen, so this allowed me to quit using CD's and instead just play music from my IPOD using my existing stereo receiver and speaker system. The only negative is that I can't get it to go as loud as when using my regular stereo. Not sure why. However, at full volume, it is loud enough for what I am doing. Previously, I tried setting up a wireless linksys system to the stereo to play the songs from the computer and I had nothing but trouble. So, the simple install made me happy. And, it charges my IPOD too.
Love it

I can plug my iPod into anything with an RCA jack (my TV, Stereo, Karaoke machine etc.) and groove to my tunes.
Works great

This product works great, just as described. The control is really easy to use and the whole dock sits nicely of the desk attached to my speaker system. Really it's great for the price you pay.
Adequate, but not for the audiophile

Great product, but as you can see from the various audio quality complaints below, there are some real challenges to attaining sound quality.
On most music, I have to turn my iPod volume down to roughly 1/4 volume, and then turn the bass all the way off on my stereo, and then increase actual speaker volume using the amp's dial. That's a hell of a lot of fiddling to get middling sound quality. Even then, there's a slight background hum that never completely goes away. From the sounds of the other reviews, every stereo requires slightly different tuning to minimalize some of these problems. Better than nothing, though.
In short, works fine for background music during a party, but not good at all if you're wanting to just quietly chill out and listen to music at a high level of sound quality.

Skip the Line Out...

This is a nice little unit if you only want a convenient charging dock. It was designed to integrate esthetically with the iPod, which it does very well. It is hard to tell that this is not an Apple product. However, there is one glaring problem with this dock. The line-out is not only very low in volume output, which was noted elsewhere in these reviews, but is also disturbingly noisy. My preferred type of music is classical, which has a very great dynamic range. If the volume is turned up sufficiently for reasonable overall volume levels, a very annoying electronic "swishing" noise makes itself present, destroying the rather remarkable fidelity of the iPod itself. I purchased this unit specifically because it had a line out, which should be the cleanest possible output, but it is neither matched to the industry standard volume of my other line-out devices, nor is it a clean signal. I find the listening sessions satisfactory only if I plug the headphone connector on the iPod directly into my amp, which, I suppose, defeats the purpose of the dock altogether. I would not have purchased this unit had I known of this shortcoming.
