The end of my in-ear headphones quest
2008-06-03
These headphones are phenomenal. I set out looking at everything from Sony EX81's to Shure SCL3's before finding these, and aside from a short list of cons, they're the best I've found. Highs are excellent, lows are fantastic (once broken in), and all frequencies blend together very naturally.
The cons? 1) These aren't workout/activity headphones. These are definitely for use while sitting a desk, or on a flight. When the wires brush against something (like a shirt) you'll hear it. 2) The memory wire loops aren't for everyone. 3) Ears are oddly-shaped little crevices and finding the right earpiece takes some time. Luckily, they come supplied with lots of options.
A few words of advice:
Let them break in. The bass will come.
If they're not fitting correctly in your ears, or the memory wires aren't to your liking, try switching the audio lines between the earbuds and wearing them like conventional headphones (using the R headphone in your L ear).
All in all, they're WELL worth the price!
Best earbuds I have ever owned

These in-ear monitors are comfortable and block out just about all external noise. They block external noise so well that I find myself turning the volume on my iPod down to almost the very bottom, even at 10% it is too loud for me. The sound quality is great, worlds better than the earbuds that come with any MP3 player. The dual driver design seems to work as advertised, highs are nice and crisp while lows are strong but not overpowering. If you want the absolute deepest bass, the kind you hear in peoples' cars when they add multiple subwoofers and a big amp without upgrading their midrange and high speakers, then these are not for you. If you are looking for nice, solid, controlled bass, then try these out.
One of the best features of these is the removable cord. One of the first things to wear out on earbuds is the wire. With these, you can order a replacement cord for $20 if the original ever breaks. Speaking of the removable cord, I recommend removing the cord from the monitors, reversing the wires (left cable on right monitor, right cable on left monitor) and putting the left monitor in your right ear and the right monitor in your left ear. You will still get proper imaging and you will probably get a better seal. I find this way to be much more comfortable, as the monitors do not stick out of your ears in this configuration, and you can lay on your side with them in. This mod is popular enough that you can find it on the Ultimate Ears web site.
With in-ear monitors getting a proper seal is essential to getting the bass response you expect. These come with five different types of end pieces, and you should try all of them until you find one that is comfortable, fully seals, and does not fall out when you move. Small air leaks make a huge difference in bass quality.
I have also tried the Triple.fi and while I feel it is a very good monitor that definitely sounds better than the Super.fi, I do not feel the difference is enough to justify the much higher price.
Pretty good.

I am an audiophile, and for the price, the audio quality is 7/10. Solid construction, but not ideal for use when exercising because they tend to fall out of your ear. You may need to spend more $$$ to get true audiophile quality.
Doesn't Get Any Better Than Ultimate Ears!

Ultimate Ears reigns. If there are better earphones, the universe kept it for itself!
The clarity, definition is on point. I just wish they would gift me with a pair of those customs.
I have the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro Clear and the Ultimate Ears Tri.fi 10 Pro Metallic Blues. The sound is insane!
To hear clear voices, piano, organ - anything that you want to hear so well that you cry, moan, smile, frown, laughUltimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro Earphones (Clear) - grab some Ultimate Ears!
All new Mac Pro users should get a pair. The mess installed in the machines is decidedly backwards, just downright inferior. To listen to sweet stuff, grab a pair of UEs.
very pleased

The ear buds stay seated in my ear canal and never slip out. They are not uncomfortable using for long periods of time. The flexible metal wire in the cord near the ear buds easily conforms to the curvature of the ear to help keep the earbuds in place. The sound is great. It is as if I am listening to my music all over again because of the the range these ear buds offer. I'm hearing parts of the song I never heard before. Noise canceling is sufficient enough as well. Most ambient noise from airplane, to TV and normal conversation are for the most part blocked. My only complaint is the length of the cord, its too short. Another 6 to 12 inches would have been perfect. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase.
I must have been unlucky

After reading the reviews, I figured these were just what I was looking for. However, the pair I received has really poor sound quality. There was a significant amount of distortion.
Excellent Choice!!

I gotta say, I'm not one for reviews but have to speak up after a long search while looking for some in ear type earphones. I looked all over, lots of reading of reviews on the different earphones, I finally decided to buy these based on quality, usage, comfort and price. I couldn't be happier! These things are great!
Was looking at buying the more expensive triple.fi 10 Pro's ($350) or the Shure SE530 ($430). Those models are 2 or 3 times the price of these Super.fi 5 pro's but there is just no way they are 2 or 3 times better, if at all!! I don't think I'm quite the "audiophile" many others are so that may be a factor. I enjoy listening to all genre's of music from rap, rock, country, pop, techno, metal and classical. Everything really. My usual sources are CD's, iPod or plug in to computer or stereo equipment. More a casual user who just wanted a little more for my listening pleasure.
So just appreciate good music, good sounds and was looking for an improvement over the normal iPod earbuds or the over the ear headphones which I enjoy but can be inconvinient. By the way, I have the Bose On-Ear cans that run about $180 and really like them. Great Base and good overall sound. But wanted something compatible but smaller & more convenient. I tried the Bose Earbuds at about $99 and didn't like the fit and the sound wasn't that "noticeable" difference compared to the iPod Earbuds. A small upgrade, but I wanted more. Better. So off I went looking for more.
I got "more" with the U.Ears Super.Fi 5 Pro's without spending an arm & a leg! Fantastic improvement over the iPod Earbuds, and better than the Bose in-ear and worth the extra money. I tried the Shure E4 and these were just better. Better overall sound & fit. Practically same price and while both were an upgrade, these just sound better. The Super.Fi 5 pro's are comfortable, deliver nice base, great sound with all Genre's of music and with minimal noise leaking. I can listen to loud music without disturbing other around me. Gives you a good seal in an excellent sound isolating earphone.
Look, the triple.fi 10 pro's and the Shure SE530's are great, but 2 to 3 times better? They are good, but I just don't see that big of a difference especially for that much money. And for what I'm using them for which is mostley listening to my iPod or CD Player are they worth the extra $200 to $250 more? I say these Super.fi 5 pro's are excellent and exactly what I was looking for.
Great earphones and good price point.
Unfreakin Believable!!!

Just got these babys. Plugged them in, turned on Xanadu by Rush and had an out of body experience. These earphones are absolutely amazing. i can't put in words the experience I just had listening to songs I have heard 1000 times before. All I can say is Bose Who?
They are on the way!

I hope these are as good as people say. I passed on the Shure SE420 to get these. I hope i was right. Was I?
Great sound!

IMHO, the reason for choosing one ear bud or headphone over another is sound quality, comfort and noise.
The sound of these ear buds is amazing. Listening to sixties rock, classical, and whatever it is my teenagers call that noise, the Super.fi5 Pro Earphones deliver unbelieveable clarity over a wider range than I had anticipated. Read the technical reviews all you want but there is plenty of base, a very clean midrange and the highs come through -- all balanced nicely.
One review I saw said they are surprisingly not uncomfortable. I think that was perfectly put. When I put them in it was not like slipping into old comfy slippers. They feel a bit awkward. But I was able to wear them in active pursuits and they don't all out, and even after long periods of time, when I took them out it was not like "Whew! Thank God!". It is not that they are comfy. They just are there and work and are not uncomfortable.
I am less clear about the noise reduction. I have not been in a plane, my primary need. Clearly filling the ear canal must reduce some sounds but how much? They don't use an active, white noise cancelling system.
Two other things. These are a highly portable great sound system so for travel it is much better than equally expensive and three times as large headphones (Sennheiser PCX 300) and the batteries that power them.
And the customer service is great. Plenty of great information in directions and the website of how to get the most out of your earbuds.
