Some creative uses and a hidden benefit of the Kreg K3 Standard Pack 2008-09-20
Other reviewers have covered the high points of this tool. I definitely think this package is the "sweet spot" because they sell an upgrade to the Master System Kreg K3UP Jig K3 Upgrade Kit. This is a no-compromise package, while the lower priced versions are not upgradable.

Creative use #1: Garden gate. The existing fence used vertical boards, toenailed at the top and bottom with finish nails. Not very secure! My new gate, finished today using this Kreg jig, uses two Kreg screws at the top and bottom of each board. The gate matches the existing fence perfectly, but imagine how much more securely the boards are held in place with four screws versus 4-6 finish nails.

Hidden benefit: Some of the boards I used had bad edges (crooked or worn and rounded). I wanted to use them because they were aged and matched the fence. Again, the Kreg system holds these boards tight, even though they do not touch flush with the frame. The ability to pick up the slack for the bad edges is a great benefit.

Creative Use #2: Furniture repair: After finishing the gate, I realized that I had several pieces of furniture with weak or squeaky joints. No longer! We bought a new mattress for our bed, but because the new mattress and box spring are so much taller than the old set, the frame squeaks. Or it did until I popped two Kreg screws into each corner. Same story with two loose table legs and one broken drawer frame. All fixed in about two minutes each. I should mention that although I have always been a fan of quality wood glue, I haven't seen the need to glue any Kreg joints.

Fantastic tool, highly recommended.

Nice and simple joinery 2008-08-21
I am usually a consumer of reviews and not a producer, but the Kreg jig is such a nice tool that it prompted me to write a review. I am a handyman carpenter/diyer and just enjoy working with wood. Most of my projects are for the garage and therefore don't necessarily require any fancy joinery work. However, a new project - building matching bedside tables for the inside of the house - requires a whole new level of craftsmanship versus the workbench for the garage.

So the Kreg jig seemed like the perfect compromise to making clean joins for the bedside table - and boy does it perform! After a bit of setting the jig up, it was very easy to make the pocket holes and make the joint.

If you are planning on using this tool heavily I would recommend the master kit with the additional base/clamp system (which the standard kit can be easily upgraded too). Otherwise this kit will work for your traditional weekend warrior.

The reason why I am not giving this a five-star review is that the hex-screw in the collar that goes around the drill bit was damaged and will not tighten without a lot of effort. But kudos to the Kreg Company, because I called them and they sent out a replacement part right-away at no charge. Also, the manual that comes with the kit does an excellent job of explaining the tool and how to make joins in different sizes of wood with nice hints and tips.

Throw your plate joiner away! 2008-08-03
Excellent product for producing fast, easy, exceptionally strong joints. The Kreg Jig is cheaper and more effective than a traditional plate joiner, and even with the added cost of its proprietary screws, it's an excellent purchase.

Highly recommended.

Pocket Hole Jig 2008-07-14
This Pocket Hole Jig was very to use, even though it was my first time using it. I was building a coffee table, and I needed a way to secure the top. I was superised how easy this was. I wish that I had bought this Jig years ago.

Thanks: Albert

A must for real wood workers 2008-05-26
The Kreg Pocket Hole Jig is a MUST for every serious woodworker. It is also an excellent gift for the serious woodworker that doesn't own one.

Great Tool 2008-03-15
I had been looking at this tool for some time and finally bought one. I love it. I am a DIY'er and not a professional and found this product very easy to work with. I was building a bookcase and farm table to and used it for both. I would say if you are looking at it...dont wait...buy it.

great tool, but needs more accessories 2008-02-26
I love this tool. It makes tight, straight joints for cabinetry. I have already built one custom bookshelf with it, and I have the pieces cut and face frame built for another. I'm planning on building custom cabinets for my kitchen with it, so I can make best use of the tiny space I have and so I can make something smooth and easy to wipe.

However, I wish I'd gone for one of the bigger sets. It would be a lot easier if I could mount the jig or clamp it down so it wouldn't move while I'm trying to get the wood into it straight. I could really use another couple of clamps to make assembly easier. I've been eyeing that right angle clamp that Kreg makes for this system. I just don't have enough hands to put things together and that resulted in my first face frame being crooked. I would also really recommend having a speed square handy when you are assembling with this. It is just too easy to get one screw pulled a little tighter than the others and get it off a tad. Once I started using a speed square held tightly into the corner while I'm driving the screws, my next two face frames came out square. So, unless you are only planning on doing really rudimentary projects, or you are so incredibly experienced and gifted that you just don't make mistakes, I'd go for a more complete set.

Cheaper than the Master, better options than the Rocket 2008-01-25
I just got this kit 2 hours ago...don't you hate when people say that? I'm proving a point. I've never made a face frame or cabinet before but a recent built in project has promted me to. I had the carcasses made while waiting for this to arrive from Amazon. I also precut the face frame from poplar. I got this package 2 hours ago and have already completed three separate face frames. Very easy to use.

The kit:
I decided the Master Kit was too much to just start out with. I like that I can upgrade to it later if I want. The Rocket system won't fit in the Master Kit's base and doesn't have a base of its own. I think this kit contains everything you need if you're not in it for profit or doing it every day. The drill guide block is made very well and allows three combinations of hole pairing without moving the wood. I screwed the portable base into a scrap piece of wood so you can drill down into the pocket just like the Master Kit. I like that feature as well. The Rocket system is always clamped horizontal unless you rig it some other way. The mobile base has little integrated tabs that hold the one clamping face in position so it doesn't have to be completely removed while switching pieces of wood. The clamp is plenty strong and works great while holding two pieces flush. The drill bit is beefy and sharp. I followed the recomendation and used a corded drill with 2,000 rpm instead of my cordless DeWalt with only 1,500. This is something to consider since the bit will cut better and stay shapper at higher rpms. I the coarse screws I bought with it work well and really pull the joint together. Overall I'm very happy with the product and I'm sure I'll go through my 1,000 screws pretty quickly doing other projects.

Cons: It's a little pricey...but what good tools aren't? Also the dust ports work well, but I do vacuum in between each piece drilled. Who'd have thought drilling would make sawdust!!
