Difficult location - excellent reception

Last winter we purchased an XM Roady for the car and a Home Kit for the house. We live in a canyon where the XM satellites are just above the horizon. We are surrounded by pine and oak trees. Signal strength from the supplied indoor antenna varied between one and two bars, but it worked well enough.
Well, it worked until the leaves appeared on the oak trees. The signal started cutting out. By late June we couldn't bear to listen to it anymore. I cut down a couple of small oak trees and the signal improved but still cut out enough to be annoying.
We purchased the Terk antenna rather than cut more trees. I hooked the Terk to a 50-foot coaxial cable and dropped it on the ground on the southwest side of the house for test. Went back in the house and hooked it up to the Roady Home Kit receiver and had the maximum four bar signal strength.
I did have one problem. When I decided to purchase the Terk antenna Amazon suggested I also purchase an XM EXT50 indoor/outdoor antenna cable. So I did. Turns out that is the wrong cable for the XM Roadie Home Kit. All I needed was a coaxial cable with two female connector ends.
XM Outdoor Antenna

The antenna arrived quickly from Amazon and had all necessary parts. I took advantage of an existing mount to add the XM antenna. I only needed to add cable to lead into the existing house wiring to get to the room where I have the XM radio.
At my northern California location I have a solid bar on the signal meter for SAT1 and SAT2 is nearly 2/3 strength. It is so much better than the antenna that came with the radio could get in an interior location. With the strong signal I may consider using a splitter so my wife can access it when she is listening in a different location in the house.
Magic

XM was the only alternative when the last Classical FM station in South Florida was turned into a Hip Hop station. I love the service all except for the fly in the ointment that sometimes the signal is flawless and other times it fades in and out like an echo in the alps. I bought extensions to position the antenna in every possible angle and position with no success. I did a search yesterday after seriously considering tuning my XM receiver with a sledge hammer, and found this Terk on Amazon and had it overnighted. All I can say is for the first time in a year I have a consistent clear signal and uninterrupted music. I think part of the reason is that you use coax cable to connect it to the receiver unit; in my case the Polk Audio XRt12. I had been using the supplied cable and antenna which is thinner and smaller. Back to loving satellite radio. Highly recommended if you have trouble with your signal.
Works great

Got this over two years ago. Have it hooked up on my roof and connected to a Delphi repeater. Get great signal throughout the house. Even in the basement.
Will buy again if I ever buy a vacation house.
Terk Satellite Radio Outdoor Home Mount Antenna Works Well
2007-01-09
I've mounted this Antenna on my roof and hooked it up to a repeater in my third-story attic using coaxial cable. The repeater sends the satellite signal throughout the house. This has worked very well. My satellite radio now picks up the signal anywhere in the house without a long satellite antenna attached to it.
Just what we needed

My husband uses his XM boom box in a basement workshop. Once evening would come, the signal would get too weak. We mounted this antenna on the south side of the house (with a wide open view of the south and west sky) and it made all the difference. He now has full signal all the time. (It also eliminates that pesky problem of his signal dropping when I would stand in the kitchen just above the boom box antenna).
Great Addition

We had an XM Ready receiver (Sony) that we previously had to locate near a South-facing window so the indoor antenna could pick up the signal. With this product, we could replace the indoor antenna we had been using (still need the XM Mini-Tuner) and move the radio to the room we really wanted. Installing the antenna was easy and the signal is great even with 100' of cable (supposed max length). This also allowed us to run the cable under the house and out of sight so the overall appearance is now much better (don't have to have the indoor antenna sitting on a shelf or window sill somewhere).
Just a word of warning

The product is fine for a Polk or other direct receiver, but if you are using the newer "XM Ready" equipment, this antenna will not work.
Do Not Buy This Product

I received this antenna as a gift. I attempted to install it and found that my receiver does not detect the antenna. Per the manual instruction, I checked all connections (using an ohmmeter) and found that the problem is a defective antenna. The manual refers the buyer/victim to XM tech support for assistance. An hour on the phone with two levels of XM tech support resulted in a referral to Terk tech support (along with the Terk support double-secret phone number). I finally reached Terk support after waiting on hold for more than an hour on two separate occasions. I was told the unit would have to be sent back for repair and was immediately switched to another department to make arrangements. After nearly an hour on hold, I gave up and left my number for a call back. I have to assume that Terk knows what this product is worth. Any reputable manufacturer with a good product would have simply replaced it. Obviously, Terk knows it can't afford such a policy with this inferior product.
Works great, but almost HAVE to moutn outside

I bought this antenna originally because in my apartment I didn't have straight shot to the southern sky, so I thought buying this and placing it near or outside my window it would work fine. Well, to say the least, that didn't work out as planned. I could barely find reception, but I can't blame it for not working in that situation I guess it wasn't intended to do such magic.
However, on the good side, I have since moved and have mounted the product on the side of the house. Now I get perfect reception with absolutely zero interruptions! Would recommend to anyone that has a place for mounting.
