Editorial Review
It's amazing how small and portable but powerful and full-featured a router could be. The Wireless-G Travel Router WTR54GS features one WAN (internet) port and one LAN port on the wired side, Wireless-G (802.11g) with Speedbooster on the other, a retractable power plug made for easier carrying and an internal antenna.

A little workhorse 2008-01-07
This is an excellent travel router, extremely reasonably priced (at least when I bought it), with a great form factor, and at least one unique capability.

This device is no bigger than the Apple Airport Extreme travel router, but it's much cheaper. What makes it special is that it can bridge wireless networks. The source can not be encrypted. But, most hotels that charge for wireless access don't encrypt the stream, they just force you to pay on a sign-up screen. This device allows multiple laptops in your room to share the one paid-for wireless stream.

Highly recommended.

Linksys Review 2007-12-30
This product is very neat! I like the fact that it was new in the box as described. Also it has very nice features.

Perfect travel router 2007-12-23
Excellent design, setup is the same as the other Linksys routers. We have been using Linksys products for over 5 years (routers, wi-fi cards, range expanders, etc) on 3 different continents without problems of interferences, compatibility or quality, which is not the case of the Netgear products we have tried. The travel router is small, light, well designed, it is compatible with 110 and 220 volts, it supports the usual wi-fi security (WEP, WPA, etc), the range is more than enough for a large hotel suite, and it can be used as an additional range expander when at home. Excellent product.

Very disappointing 2007-12-03
Why?
I purchased this for the same reason as many others. I needed a light and compact device to travel with. I also needed to always have a wireless connection even if a hotel only offers wired service.

Before my trip, I tested this in the office. It was a pain to set up but I got it working. In the office it worked with properly with both wired and wireless configurations. It is important to note that it can only share a totally open wireless connection. This works fine but is likely to be useless in the real-world.

When I tried to set it up at the hotel it would not reliably acquire a DHCP address. When directly connected, my laptop worked just fine 100% of the time. No amount of playing with the settings would change this. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it wouldn't. Perhaps this had to do with the RADIUS system the hotel uses but I don't really care. I tried the hints above and troubleshooting from the Linksys site.

It is also important to note that the range is quite poor when compared to standard wireless routers. However, this should not be a problem for its intended use in a hotel room.

Luckily I had also brought along an older Netgear wireless router which worked just fine. I just plugged it in and it worked!

I would say stay away. Mine is going back today.

Compact travel router but install took troubleshooting 2007-11-25
This wireless router is a very convenient size and configuration, but the setup wasn't transparent. I expected it to be "plug and play", but my notebook computer couldn't find the wireless network at first. It took several attempts and playing with the software configuration to make it work. The documentation and instructions should be expanded to incorporate more information or the CD should walk you through it when you run it. Functionally, however, this is a nice little router for travelers. Just try it at home before a trip so you won't be frustrated on the road.

Excellent for the traveler 2008-06-21
This router is terrific. I read reviews on many travel routers and this one lives up to the hype. After it is configured, it is just "plug it in and it works" (configuration isn't too hard, but only needs to be done once). I've used it several places and it is great. Good signal through several walls (using it right now at my in-laws house, making their cable wireless for my stay).

Best gadget I never knew I needed 2008-04-21
This was an impulse buy for me. My logic at the time of purchase was that I could pre-configure it as a grab and run WAP and throw it up wherever and whenever a quick and dirty hot spot was needed in our four floor public building. The fact that it had limited range was more a plus than a liability. After all, it was designed for a limited area such as a hotel or a conference room.

I was surprised with the configuration and security options which matched those of the general purpose WRT54G and secondly, at least my unit has fantastic coverage. When placed on the second floor I get about 200' coverage in every direction and ample bandwidth using up to 10 notebooks.

I'm amazed at the number of speakers who appear for seminars, lectures and training sessions assuming the availability of wireless Internet. Most initially try to connect with their cellular solutions but quickly abandon them in favor of the WAP. In that regard this little travel router has been a God send.

I have had it about a year now and it has been quite reliable.

Worked great for 1 year 2008-03-27
Worked great for 1 year, I thought I could use this at home all the tme beasue of my space limitation. It lasted 1 year and burned out. If you just use it for tarveling you will be fine.

Nice size ran hot 2008-01-27
Good size for traveling, did run hot and had problems with WEP. Once running it was great to pay for one connection and have 2 laptops on line in two different hotel rooms (nearby).

Great Gadget 2008-01-13
Great for hotels with weak or no wireless. Also for going to a friend's house with no wireless. Getting your car serviced and the complimentary work stations are taken? Just pop your travel router in and you're up!
