Review of Canon scanner 8400F
2005-09-26
This was a good purchase, although difficult to get through the internet process.
The scanner arrived in good shape and scans flat graphic material fine. I have not been able to get it to scan positive film or negatives yet. I've contacted Canon, received some advice; it still doesn't work on film or slides. I plan to contact Canon technical service again today.
Great Scans for the cost

I was not sure about using an inexpensive scanner for digitizing my treasured slides and negatives. I am very impressed with the quality of the scans. The scans do come out with a bluish cast. This is easy to fix in Photoshop. The focus could be a bit better. Overall, I am quite impressed.
I'm Impressed!

Well, I just finished scanning my entire 35mm slide collection consisting of over 500 slides.
The main purpose of this project was to transfer the slide images onto CDs and prepare a slide show for TV through a DVD player. As such, I scanned the slides at 1200DPI.
The slides represented a variety of dates and chemistries included Ektachrome, Kodachrome, gaf Pana-Vue, and other non-marked types, going all the way back to 1969.
Now, I must admit I did go against much of the advice give to me by professionals and members of my own computer club. The consensus was that slides were too hard to scan, took too much time, and one would see better results by sending off the slides to a professional service. Based on the results of my previous experimentation (slide projected photos, old scanner modifications), I had to agree with the experts. Had I had a small number of slides, I would have sent them away to be processed, but with the quantity I was dealing with, and not knowing which ones I wanted to digitize, I was just about ready to give up the project altogether.
I then did my homework and found that both Epson and Cannon produced relatively low cost flat bed scanners, which scanned slides and film. I read very good reports about the Cannon 8400F, and found that Amazon was selling refurbished units very reasonably.
I have been very impressed with both the scanner and the software provided. The delivered unit arrived looking "Brand New". The 8400F is BIG! - Much bigger than its little brother the 4200F. I rationalized its "big-ness" as representing "commercial quality".
The scanner, with the CanoScan software does an excellent job on 35mm slides. Combined with the included, ArcSoft PhotoStudio 5.5, and other bundled software, you basically have a whole photo lab at your disposal.
The scanner scans four slides at a time, which really helps. It takes about 12 minutes to do the scan at 1200 DPI, and another three minutes or so, to orient and make minor improvements to the images in PhotoStudio. That may seem like a long time, but through the magic of "multi-tasking" the operator is free to do other things, like check e-mail, or write articles, while the slides are scanning. CanoScan even offers you the option to hear your favorite MP3 or WAV file while the machine is "doing its thing".
Aside from the "slides" project, in the short amount of time I've had this scanner, I've used the "Stitch" feature of the software, which automatically pulls together scans that are bigger than the platen, and the "pull-up scanner lid" for scanning bulky items ( I scanned a diploma in its frame.
All-in-all, I can heartily recommend both the Scanner and Amazon.
Mom's loving it...now I want one.

We got this scanner for my Mom's birthday. She is not a 'computer person' and needed something that is easy to use. In addition to being easy to use, it also works well in the complicated mode. It was in very good condition upon receipt. We plugged it up and it works like a charm.
Warranty is 90 days, not 1 year

Just got this and noticed that the warranty is not what is stated on Amazon.com. To quote from the warranty statement included with my scanner: "The Product is warranted against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and service (a)for a period of one (1)year from the date of original purchase when delivered to you in new condition in its original container or (b)for 90 days from the date of original purchase for refurbished Products."

Over the last 45 years, or so, I have amassed close to 9,000 slides, in varoiud formats; 16 mm, 35 mm, 2-14" and 2-1/4" X 3-14". I am scanning and edting all the pictures for my family. The scanner does a wondeful job.

I ordered this Cannon scanner and got it the Next Day! That may have just been because of where I lived but what a pleasent surprize. It worked perfect and I got it cheap. Great job Amazon!
No Quality Control

I bought this scanner knowing this was a refurbished item. Amazon delivered it on-time and as usual the service from Amazon was excellent. The scanner is another thing.
First, the scanner was not locked as it should have been when I opened it. But that is not a big deal. The problem was that this scanner came with a bad lamp right out of the box! All scans had a bright yellow and red color in them (even white documents). The Canon customer service confirmed this and were ready to send another one. But I decided to return it to Amazon anyway.
What struck me is that they promised it to be "FACTORY REFURBISHED" and they did not check such a basic thing as if it scans correctly or not. This makes me think that Canon just repacks them and takes a chance that it may be good. Decided to go with another brand and stick with brand new!
Amazon quickly refunded the full amount. I give 5 stars to Amazon and 1 to Canon.
Worth the money

I recived my scanner in 5 days and used it right away. It works great! However the softwere, Presto, page manager has quit working. I have not deleated it yet and reinstalled it. Other than that, it's just what I needed.
