Hendrix, master of the Stratocaster

While many have seen snippets of the Woodstock film, this video goes above and beyond being simply a "concert film". It features a well designed and played out story of Hendrix's appearance at Woodstock with the crowning moment of the technicolor footage of the Woodstock performance. It definitely gives you a good feel of what it was like to have "been there".
This video along with Jimi Plays Berkeley are among my favorites. Highly recommended if you're a Hendrix fan.
Ah! those were the days

This dvd is simply superb. Watch him in amazement, you will see that all other guitarists come in second. He has no peers. The sound amazes for something recorded in the 60s', not quite the same standards as those recorded these days but great none the less. If you are a music fan of the era its a must.
Great Buy

This was a gift for my brother. He absolutely loves it and he is all into this kinda stuff. He is also 19 and has been playin the electric guitar since he was about 10. He knows great music composition when he hears it and he loves this. Great Buy!
It's Jimi at Woodstock, what else do you need to know

Ok, maybe you should know that the congo player is in most of the shots of Jimi (Jimi, why did you put him right next to you?), and he's really distracting (even though you can't hear him), that aside this is truly classic, and for the price it's offered at to me it's a no brainer.

The Final Show at Woodstock

This DVD gives you some great footage of Hendrix playing. Not only about Hendrix though, it gives you great footage of woodstock too, and gives you lots of details. This is a must have for any Hendrix fan.
Great

Now, if only they would release performances from the other artists that were at woodstok. This doesn't have all the pseudo-psych filming that over time has gotten in the way of the woodstock movie. This is a great show.
WOW

I heard Eddie Kramer say that this is not one of Jimi's better performances.......I can see that maybe it is not his most consistent, but some of his performances are as bad as it gets. (Bad in the best sense of the word)This really is some of the greatest electric guitar playing ever captured, and the sound of this DVD is outstanding. Crank it up on the surround sound!!!!
Eddie Kramer is a jerk.

Alright here's the definitive deal on this DVD. I am going to say everything it took me so long to find out about Jimi's Woodstock show. I love Jimi Hendrix and every music fan should buy this DVD because of the brilliant view of this excellent live performance. It show's Jimi's brilliant technique and has wonderful music. But it's nowhere near complete. This show and the 2CD audio version are butchered. I have heard the full bootleg concert and it's even better than this. The reason this show doesn't get 5 stars is because of Experience Hendrix.
Background - I will start off by saying that I am a Woodstock collector and am nearing completion of gathering every little snippet of audio (and video) I can find from that monumental festival. Jimi Hendrix's music is what introduced me to 60's music and remains my favorite 60's music. The story behind this show is that Jimi had signed something indicating that he would be the last act to go on at Woodstock. Because of various uncontrollable factors the festival was put several hours late (had originally been planned to finish up on Sunday evening in actuality ran till Monday morning). It was suggested that Hendrix go on at Midnight (9 hours before his actual playing time) so he could play to more people. Hendrix's managers decided against it and as a result all the players were very tired by the time they took to the stage.
The Actual Show - It's one of the greatest live concerts of all time. The band is very rough, disorganized and muddy sounding. The players are all good, but they were tired, they didn't know the tunes very well and were under-rehearsed. Nevertheless they played a brilliant, 19-song concert, full of absolutely amazing playing. The setlist is as follows in titles at the time, with eventual titles in parentheses and stars indicating songs that are complete or are parts of medleys (I'm sure you can tell).
1. Message To Universe (Message To Love)*
2. Gettin' My Heart Back Together (Hear My Train A Comin')
3. Spanish Castle Magic
4. Red House
5. Mastermind
6. Lover Man*
7. Foxey Lady*
8. Jam Back At The House (Beginnings)
9. Izabella*
10. Gypsy Woman
11. Aware Of Love (as part of medley with "Gypsy Woman")
12. Fire*
13. Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
14. Stepping Stone (as part of medley with Voodoo Child (Slight Return))*
15. Star Spangled Banner (as part of medley with Voodoo Child Slight Return))*
16. Purple Haze (as part of medley with Voodoo Child Slight Return))*
17. Woodstock Improvisation (as part of medley with Voodoo Child Slight Return))*
18. Villanova Junction (as part of medley with Voodoo Child Slight Return))*
19. Hey Joe*
This concert features some of Hendrix's best playing. He solos with impassioned genius, putting his entire soul into every note. Larry Lee's solos are great though they are not Jimi-good. The Percussionist's interludes are fine with Mitch Mitchell being the best. I know Mitch Mitchell didn't like this band but every other surviving band member I've heard talk about it seem to share my own view. The ensemble parts are ragged but the solos are mesmerizing.
The Officially Released Version - This is where I get to my title. Eddie Kramer (Hendrix's sound engineer) took way too many liberties with this. People complain because the percussionists are almost inaudible, some of this is Kramer's fault but mostly it's because they were badly miked. In the bootleg version they're not much better heard. Yes Kramer screwed with the mix, but not that much. Hendrix was very loud and you can't hear the rhythm guitar much better in the original mix. For the starred ones listen to the officially released versions, the remastered versions are better. For the unstarred ones listen to the bootleg version, they contain the good Larry Lee solos and Percussion interludes/solos. Another thing the black & white "Hear My Train A Comin'" is heavily butchered. The original has a great intro and Larry Lee's best solo. You can get the bootleg version of the whole show from the "Complete Bootleg Woodstock". That particular torrent presents every bit of bootleg audio material you could possible find. It's in the annoying sound format .flac so I suggest you get "From Havens to Hendrix - Woodstock" in mp3 form, which has the entire Festival, but which I refuse to download because I believe in paying artists. Eddie Kramer is a jerk because he insulted the other players and really Jimi by messing with what Hendrix originally presented and the people he hired.
In the end, I suggest you buy the DVD, but download the bootleg (for free) too.
