Philips 10.2 portable DVD 2007-11-15
I love my new player...the picture is great, it is easy to use, and it has a usb port...speakers aren't the greatest, but I have some portable ones and use a headset much of the time anyway...

Excellent Portable DVD Player I Ever Have 2007-06-25
It has a wider screen which is very good for viewing.Sounds are good, not scattered or dull to the ears.Features are easy to understand, not complicated.

Loud drive 2007-06-05
Just got this from J&R. The drive is loud even after the DVD loads. Not a biggie since I plan on using it on a plane for my son.

Not pleased... but better now. 2007-04-14
My wife got this for me at Christmas, and after one trip - the screen cracked internally. (No, it was not dropped! I watched it crack before my eyes!) I have been reviewing a lot of the comments on various websites and have found that Phillips apparently have discontinued this line. Since then, I tried taking it back to Circuit City, who told me even though we had purchased a full price repair policy, that they could do nothing for us. (Hint: I will be happy to hear Circuit City's side of the story, but they didn't impress me in the least.)

After my wife, who purchased the unit for me, talked for nearly an hour with the phillips people, they agreed to an RMA. Their RMA replacement will take between 10 and 15 days once they get the unit, to ship another. I can't say I'm really surprised, but I'm not that impressed either. I did recieve it in reasonable time at no cost, except for my shipping back to them. The worst part was, I was on a trip and had to lug the unit all over the USA just to be able to return it - in hopes of finding another. Many units I have read are being returned for faulty/noisy drives. I had issues with some DVD's, but it mostly was due to how well the disk was seated in the drive. This is definately *NOT* suitable for a child or anyone with low tolerances. Also, when I got it back - they failed to return my carry case or the sling for the back of the car seat. Phillips - I am NOT impressed by your product or your service. Feel free to "fix" the situation should one of your people read this review.

A good portable DVD 2007-04-01
Overall I find this unit to be very good. I also agree with most of the other reviews. However I wanted to add a con not mentioned in the other reviews. On my unit the DVD's have to be perfect in order to play. Any small scratch that would still be playable on your main DVD player or your laptop will not play on this unit. It will simply hang up and not play.Buffing the DVD with a repair kit will not help. I had to resort to making a copy of the DVD in order to play with this unit. I suggest looking over your DVD's carefully. If any have a scratch dont expect it to play.

excellent picture, great output, caution on the price!!!! 2006-12-24

Five star quality picture and features, caution with the DVD open button 2006-10-09
I picked up this player two days ago. Unfortunately, I had to return it once because the latch mechanism on the DVD lid broke. I think it was defective from the start because the replacement one is solid, but make sure you hold the button in as you close the lid and then release it to ensure the same does not happen to you.
Otherwise, I own another philips regular DVD player (dvp-642) and love it to death. As with that player, this player and it's 10.2" screen has a very crisp image that rivals many big LCD/plasma screens, great contrast and clarity for a portable player. Also, this kit comes with every cable you would need. It has A/V cables, Componants cables (yes, this is progressive scan), s-video, lighter adapter, AC adapter, the only thing it doesn't come with is a little set of earbuds and a case. Yes, the battery does take 5-7 hours to charge, and the battery life is only about 2.5-3 hours depending on your contrast settings. The DVD player is quiet during play, and does make some noises on menus and startup, but this is fairly standard with any player. My brother has a toshiba 8.5inch and it is louder during playback. This model does not have a 5-in-1 drive for memory cards like the Toshiba and some other models, but thats ok, It's 10.2 high quality inches. I have seen no problems with the "anamorphic" picture that another reviewer stated. Also, the remote is very small and thin, and the color schemes make it hard to read, especially if low light. I was gunshy to get another player like this one because of the latch mechanism, but one of the big chain stores had this player on clearance for $175, and I just can't even get close to this quality of a product otherwise for that price. You just can't beat the picture quality, it rivals any LVD/plasma tv, and it is a progressive scan player, so you can connect it to an outside TV and see this as well. An outstanding product, one minor flaw to watch.

4:3/ 16:9 no problem 2006-07-10
I read with interest some of the complaints about wide screen (anamorphic) on this unit. It was a simple option in the setup menu to change from 16:9 to 4:3. There is even a setting for Letter Box and non-Letter Box.

After that my first of two complaints is that the contrast ratio, I think, could be better. However, that said, the picture is definitely the best in this class.

I read numerous reviews of this and the Panasonic LS-90 and also compared them side-by-side and the PET 1002 has a superior picture with much better resolution.

The battery issue still needs to be addressed by Phillips. I agree with other reviewers that a unit in this price range should have a longer run time and more substantial attachment points. I'm not an industrial design engineer but it would seem a simple matter to reverse the attachment points so the battery would fit under the unit instead of sticking out behind it where it is subject to shock and possible breakage.

The transport mechanism on my unit I found to be exceptionally loud. I'm not sure if they are all that way or not but this was a bit annoying. However, if the unit were to be used as I would expect to in most cases with headphones this should not be a large issue.

One nice feature is that the unit accepts external video and audio inputs so it can also be used as a monitor. We will be using it in a configuration where this will be very helpful.

big problem - anamorphic picture 2006-04-14
I bought this product 4/13/2006
It was excellent before I found the picture is anamorphic
If we see "anamorphic wide screen movie" at a 4:3 screen, the shape is perfectly anamorphic.( if you don't select 4:3 letterbox)
but even in the wide mode at 16:9 it still little too much anamorphic-
If you watch carefully the screen; human face looks longer than the standard and circle looks ellipse
After I saw this It border me; I could not watch the movie- I tried several different movies but same result.

I went to best buy, circuit city and comp usa, and tried all 10.2" portable dvd players- maybe you don't believe it -all 10.2" screen dvd players had same anamorphic problems- philips, polaroid, initial, insignia, . etc- I think all companys are from same lcd panel company.

I have returned 5 players -1. polaroid,($289)-low contrast, 2. panasonic($399)-do not have AV input, 3. insignia($339)-10'2-anamorphic problem, 4. toshiba($289)-not clear dark picture and av input image is terrible, and 5. philips($399 anamorphic problems.

finally I bought a Durrabrand 8.5" player(179) at wall mart- picture is not progressive but very high contrast and very clear and realistic and not anamorphic and AV input image is also good- it is just like Panasonic quality + AV input- even little samller screen the 10.2" but Now I am very satisfied of the product. I am also disappointed of the famous brand. -Panasonic, specially toshiba, and company of 10.2 inch.

if you don't mind the anamorphic - you can buy Philips, or any chipper 10.2" but - I don't recommend it
if you don't mind AV input buy panasonic

Wonderful Picture 2006-02-22
After researching several portable DVD player I decided to purchase the Phillips PET1000 10.2 Portable DVD Player and have been very pleased with this purchase. The is hands down the best picture of any of the available portable DVD players. The battery is a bit bulky but not a problem. The remote is great. The sound from the speakers is adequate but then you don't expect home theater quality sound in a portable player. Overall, this is an excellent product. At the current price this is an excellent deal and I would highly recommended it to anyone looking for a quality portable DVD unit.
